The only times I've had lockup clutch it was the clutch itself, replace converter. But that was on the four speeds. The six speed is a different animal, only have one of those in an 09 4.0. First locked clutch was in a 94 at 130K. I figured that while I had it out to do converter I'd just rebuild. Measured every clutch disc and plate. Every one measured NEW. Not within service limit, but no measurable wear. When clutch locked up on 91 at 160K I just replaced the converter. That was 7 years and 60K ago, no problem since. So, we don't know how long the four speeds last after the 94 upgrade. BTW, it's never too late to service one. If you want another 100K out of it, CHANGE THE FLUID! My 6 speed is at 195K. I learned long ago that all of the all clutch Chryslers are very sensitive to fluid quality. Changing fluid every 30K is cheap. We've got three of them near 200K now with no trans problems so we don't know how long they last if you change the fluid. Just put a 1/4" roof screw in pan for a drain, no need to drop pan. Takes exactly 1 gallon for refill. Change filter at 100K. Made my own dipstick for 6 speed, but you can buy on Amazon. And use infrared thermometer on pan (6 speed) to check temp for proper fluid level, level changes with temp. Scanner not required.

Hi Kenny, I'm sure you remember the mid 80's to very early 90's GM products with TCC solenoid failures like crazy. If you were a good and honest mechanic you would look like a hero to your customers who were just quoted a transmission from another shop. I was always busy when I had my shop, no advertising, just word of mouth and I was swamped. Now I'm mostly on the road at other shops or customers houses doing mainly diagnostics, and im busy always! Keep up the great videos and the honest work ethics!

They told him about 12 K to rebuild ! He got lucky and found a specialist who correctly diagnosed the problem and changed the part for about $ 800.00 . Nice fix .

It is actually named TCC, torque converter clutch. I use to build them at GM plant in Ypsilanti, MI. It means that the converter 'locks up" which essentially means that it in the 'overdrive' system.

Hi Kenny I myself worked for a Mitsubishi dealership and had a lot of work on the torque converter clutch lockup the Mitsubishi transmissions would lock up in every gear after 1500 rpm so it would be 1st slip first lock up 2nd slip 2nd lockup 3rd slip 3rd lockup 4th slip 4th lockup on the gear change it needed to slip momentarily to give a smooth gear change the other thing was reverse gear because the transmission is computer controlled say you were cruising down the road and accidentally moved the gear lever to reverse the computer will not engage reverse until the vehicle was traveling to below 3 kilometres per hour only then would the computer engage reverse which was a great safety feature happy motoring regards peta smith

The transmission in my 05 Dodge Magnum Hemi is a 5 speed Mercedes transmission. The conductor plate inside the trans is prone to failure. the replacement conductor plate is a Dorman that has Mercedes molded into the plate in a couple of places. You can pay big bucks to the dealer to get one or buy a Dorman locally for less or much less at rockauto, all the same part.

Just got the dipstick for my 2011 Compass CVT. Thanks for making me realize I didn't even need it. Any dipstick will measure the same, it's all about the mm measurement anyways. I can't stand CVT's in general, especially the crap trans in this vehicle. I have no leaks at all, but since it was given to my wife and I at only 24K miles, the trans will slip like crazy after 3K RPM. We have been babying it ever since I noticed the issue. It has now roughly 57K miles on it now, and I'm afraid of checking the trans fluid and it's condition.

To each is own. I've heard the arguments against changing the fluid in transmission but I've never bought it. Imo new fluid can never hurt a transmission. If it dies after a change it was dying anyway

@northpoint1039

I think conventional wisdom is that if the trans fluid is not burnt or looking really old then its ok to change it. I have also heard that the clutch packs tend to wear and the friction material is suspended in the trans fluid. So, If that's the case and you change the fluid the trans will then malfunction. This is because the friction material suspended in the fluid is now gone with the new fluid change. That is just what I have heard. I am a DIY and not a mechanic. I did a partial drain and fill on my 2008 lucerne and also put in a new trans. pan with a drain bolt in it. I have approx. 159,000 on my lucerne and it still runs fine. Im hoping to milk my Lucerne until the used car market settles down. I just heard today that, That will probably not happen until 2025.

My conventional wisdom with automatics is that torque converters make a lot of heat and break down the fluid. Add to that the factor of it never going anywhere and being used possibly even 100,000 miles. Back in the big car with V8 days most would have the original fluid the whole life of the car. They were usually pretty wasted by then. My dad bought a new big Chevy, at 50,000 miles I changed as much of the fluid as i could. At 100,000 miles it would still get a healthy second gear shift. My son got a cheap first car and the trans fluid looked like dirty cleaning fluid and wasn't even slippery. Top that off the bolts were breaking on the pan and made him afraid to take it off. So I rigged a siphon with a tiny hose that he could put down the filler tube. He changed a quart and a half every week. After a while it started getting red and oily. He drove it about 6 months before he sold it and it still worked.

Many Chevy trucks and cars with 6L80 or 6L90 transmission have the TCC and it is programmed to lockup in every gear. If you reprogram it to only lockup in top gears and also program it so that it completely locks up and doesn’t slip so much the trans can run cooler and for much longer. The friction disks on the TCC are a huge Chevy problem on many of these transmissions because of bad programming decisions. Reprogram correctly and it should last forever.

100k is not too late to service the transmission. Simply drop the pan, replace filter, clean pan, replace the fluid that came out. If no serviceable pan, then drain out fluid and replace what comes out. Neither way will hurt anything. I wouldn't flush it, however a pan drop and refill won't hurt anything.

@@kellismith4329 Not unless the transmission was totaled neglected and the fluid actually is burnt. If it hasn't been beaten to death then a pan drop, filter and fluid won't hurt anything and would be beneficial. If equiped with a removable pan, you can always inspect to see how much clutch material is in the pan. If it's that far gone then bolting the pan back up and pouring the used fluid back in won't change anything. I have dropped the pan, replaced filter along with the 3-5 quarts of fluid depending on the make without any issues, even at 100k. Now I'd never recommend using a flushing machine period unless it's part of regular scheduled maintenance and even then I'd make certain the correct fluid is going back in! Even if your make doesn't have a serviceable filter, then simply draining out a few quarts, replacing it and adding an inline filter can be very beneficial. Some things you read about automatic transmissions are true, some are wives tales. Best practice is to drain and refill every 30k no matter what the manual states (unless it calls for more frequent service) All of the manufacturers who claim lifetime fluid is simply to get the vehicle through the warranty period!

So there I am looking for a UFO in the sky causing some EMP electrical interference and never could spot one.... lol. Sometimes all it takes is that same condition for a problem to reveal itself, any other condition and symptoms just isn't there... strange. It really makes you think that's for sure.

I believe some people have checked into what I believe is a myth that there's too much clutch material in various pockets in the fluid system. If the fluid is changed, that material gets broken loose and causes transmission failure. I changed the fluid in a 350,000+ Toyota Camry transmission and didn't have any issues. Haven't had enough experiences to really prove it's not a myth.
