There have been a lot of great stables throughout wrestling history. Names like The Four Horsemen, DGeneration-X and The Shield are evidence enough of this. That said, while all these were great and did huge things for their respective companies, perhaps no other collective has ever changed the industry as much as the one first created by Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall in 1996. Yes, we’re finally looking at the biggest of them all, the one which arguably started the late 90’s boom period and took WCW to previously unseen levels of success, then went a long way towards killing that same company with its own lethal dose of poison just a few years later. So, join us today as we take a deep dive into their entire run from start to finish in 4 Life: The NWO Story.

Fun Fact: Rey Mysterio came up with the idea of being thrown like a dart against the trailer. Kevin Nash was worried he would seriously hurt Rey, but Rey talked him down and convinced him to do it.

You’ll die, that’s real glass it’ll cut you to pieces. Just let me throw you into the side of it.” Then Rey said “we’ll make it look more realistic so throw me headfirst like a lawn dart.” Then they both agreed on that. If they had gone with Rey’s idea we would’ve had a Goldberg situation where he busted the limo window with his hand instead of the bat and severed nerves in his hand and was bleeding out on live television because he nicked an artery in his wrist. The NWO has got to be the greatest faction concept in wrestling history. It completely changed the traditional face/heel (good guy/bad guy) setup that has been the standard since the beginning. Now there was a grey area, and they were basically anti-heros who beat up on anyone, regardless of heel/face status.

I was born in 1988. I didn't even realize wcw was a thing until the giant vs hogan before the turn. I only started watching regularly when scott hall showed up because i was always a wwf fan. Had hogan not turned people my age would only know hogan from highlights. So happy he turned and I got to watch probably the greatest Era in wrestling because of it.

The NWO was so groundbreaking and fresh when i first saw the faction watching WCW Nitro as a kid. It sadly got too bloated and never felt like it had a satisfying ending. Wish Sting had gotten a clean victory over Hogan at Starrcade '97 and that set up the ending of the faction.

Ending the faction in Dec 1997 when it was the reason for the entire companies rise & most successful year ever is the dumbest notion ever. Especially in hindsight considering 1998 was an even more successful year in EVERY regard in large because of nWo. Those that point to Goldberg as the reason for WCW's isuccess n 1998 or naïve bc he didn't become a ratings draw until 2nd quarter of year and arena draw until 3rd quarter. Regardless ending the faction in December 1997 is again the dumbest thing ever. There was still plenty of juice left in it by 1999 and ratings were massive in first quarter of 1999. The mistake was not keeping nWo around longer in 1999 with more compelling storylines/TV. When the nWo was fizzled out in Spring 1999 is when WCW's numbers started to nosedive - people ignore this though bc they simply don't look up what the numbers tell us.

I watched WCW first.. And would watch WWF during commercials.. Gradually it became the other way around until eventually I wouldn't even turn to Nitro during Raw's commercial break. Having said that.. Goldberg beating Hogan for the belt on Nitro is *still* my all time favorite moment/match from my wrestling fan days. I still watch it from time to time and it still gives me goosebumps.. 12 year old me was *so* pumped when Goldberg speared him.. I'll never forget that night!

at the time the fans didn't know Hogan was a heel early in his career....so to the majority of fans seeing him turn heel was a new thing to them........I already knew he had been a heel in WWWF when Vince Sr was in charge..with Freddie Blassie as his manager. so Hogn turn heel to join the NWO was not a suprise to me.

Nwo had its ups and downs but mostly ups. Not only did they shock the wrestling world and gave something fresh and cool for the late 90s youths but this group also helped many careers. For starters it gave Hogan a fresh new start after the overstayed persona of Hulkamania into a heel role never seen before. Then it gave some midcard wrestlers who seemed to be going nowhere a brand new gig and eventually popularity like Buff and K dawg. Also Scott Steiner who's been in a tag team for the longest time was now given an opportunity to go solo and reinvent himself as Big poppa. Of course every good thing must come to an end and pretty much the Nwo elite was the final straw.

Imagine if Scott Hall and Kevin Nash had not been in the Editing Room when producers and editors edited the very first Hogan video taped promo. I remember hearing a story from Hall and Nash, that Hogan’s promo was the absolute worst Heel Promo of all time, and if Hogan pulled his Creative Control card the NWO would have failed before it even started.

I remember all this like it was yesterday!!!! I wish wrestling could go back to this style and these characters!!!! It’s nothing like this now! And it’s so crazy to think I remember when wcw was bigger than wwf, and then something changed and raw took over everything and nitro went down hill quickly there after but nitro was so sick while it lasted!!!!!!
