I was at this Nitro. It's the only WCW event I ever attended. 24 years, 8 months later and this is the first recorded footage of this night that I've ever seen. I've been waiting a long time for this episode. Nicely done, as always.

This reminded me that I went to a Nitro in 1998 looked up the date and remembered it was the Nitro before Road Wild. I had a sign that said "Hogan whoop Leno's ass" and the guy checking signs made me get rid of the word ass so it ended up saying "Hogan whoop Leno" and was so glad I phrased it in a way that it still made sense when I tore off that part of it 🤣

For some reason I vividly remember the Kane/Vader fight more than any other Kane squash. Kane was so unstoppable at this point and I thought Vader was one of the last remaining forces that could stop him because of his size and how he actually put up a fight against Kane. To me, this solidified Kane as being absolutely invincible and genuinely terrifying.

Among the bajillion absurd things with how WCW was booked at this point: Mongo, a man who had been wrestling for all of two years at this point, being the representation of all that was good and pure, with Davey boy smith being the upstart usurper. Completely forgot about the NWA retirement tour part of Raw in the early 1998 (sorry Jim cornette)
@henrygvidonas9573 Жыл бұрын
Jim hated the storyline and felt that it was out of place and anachronistic because the NWA had become practically close to meaningless by 1998. I believe, in Jim's view, this was just Vince McMahon making fun of a defeated broken former competitor, just like he did later (but worse) with the WWE-WCW brand or ECW after he had bought it. If I'm not mistaken, being written into this storyline was yet another point of contention added to his conflict with Russo, too. Then they made him manage a WWF version of The Midnight Express, with no actual Midnight Express members. That must have really felt insulting to him - and he never managed anyone at ringside in the WWF again. The main reason why WWE-WCW never worked, was that Vince just couldn't stop "winning the war" over and over. He just had to compulsively humiliate and demean WCW again and again, instead of using the brand and it's former stars intelligently. The WCW audience largely just went away, instead of joining and growing the WWE audience.

Chris Kanyon and Brian Clark both should've been much bigger stars than they were ever allowed to be. Wrath was a better gimmick than Adam Bomb by a mile, but once the Glacier thing was done, it's like management just didn't realize they could keep pushing him if they wanted. Concerning this week, The Outlaws v Cactus/Funk match was one of my favorite moments during this time, when they went bananas at the end. It's also interesting how time compresses in my memory, the Sting/Hogan feud and The Giant's neck injury against Nash I remember in a different timeline than the build up towards Mania 13, but here they are happening simultaneously. Yet, watching this whole series, really solidifies how poorly WWF used Vader over these 3 year. He'd have a 4-5 week program or angle that was amazing, then 4-5 months of absolutely nothing, and that cycle would repeat over and over. Vader/Yoko/Monsoon, then nothing. The Fatal-4-Way, then nothing. Camp Cornette vs HBK & Babyfaces, then nothing. Shamrock, then nothing. Now Kane, soon nothing again. How could they not figure out how to use him consistently.
