Turner always appreciated what Wrestling did for his business. It's why it took him losing decision making power to make it go away. It's the only reason WCW folded. People like to say it was one reason or another that WCW went out of business, but it was only ever because of the Time Warner deal, and Turner losing power due to it. The Monday Night Wars might still be going on to this day if Turner had any say in it.

In all honesty from everything I can gather from the time period in the 80s because there were so many regional promotions under the NWA banner they were all mainly operating at a loss or close to it and most who were running them were all looking to either sell or merge with others to try and getting a larger possible audience. A few have suggested that it was Vince's fault because of the money that was spent buying back GCW that JCP was eventually sold to Turner. When if anything the business model was dead and having regional promotions no longer worked when you were trying to reach a national audience and having programming that only certain places got to see just wasn't going to cut it anymore. It also was far more expensive when certain guys were being booked in two different territories in one day because each territory knew the top guys were going to sell more tickets but the travel expenses were out weighing the turnover eventually. If anything Vince just helped speeding up the process of the NWA's business model being obsolete faster.
@curtailedbike41233 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I thinks vince saw the writing on the wall when he decided to go national. People may not like to admit it but vince may have actually saved wrestling as he pushed it to modernized with the times.

If anything, the NWA should have consolidated the regions in the early 80s, like a West of the Rockies, Midwest, Dixie (And Texas) and Mid-Atlantic and gave each one a feature basic cable weekly show. Georgia Championship Wrestling (later World Championship Wrestling v. 1) was the model to follow, but I dunno if you could have told anyone in 1981/82 and had them listen.
@dmichael11723 жыл бұрын
It wasn't because JCP buying the time slot that made them sell. In 85 to 87 they made money in comparison. It was Crockett's expansion in buying UWF/ mid south and running shows in the West. Looking forward to your future videos, I get happy knowing there's a new bios and old ones yet to be seen. Yet, I don't have any passion & interest in watching current wrestling on TV anymore.

Good content as always. I Enjoy your channel you’re one of the best historians of wrestling here on KZbin.

You are a top wrestling historian. Your delivery has character, you interject some comedy but it doesn't take away from the narrative, and you obviously love the subject matter. Thank you for your videos.

Missed opportunity on the part Vince McMahon. He could've had matches where WWF wrestlers could wrestle wrestlers from the South. Imagine Roadwarriors vs British Bulldogs.
@andrejg41363 жыл бұрын
Now if Vince wasn't a petty vindictive man with an axe to grind, he would have held the programming steady for a month or so, but teased some A or B-tier WWF talent coming down to assess the situation. Basically you know how everyone fantasy books the Invasion? That but in reverse with the WWF Talent being the invaders.

If Vince had a brain. WcW acquisition rings a bell…..
@juststatedtheobvious96333 жыл бұрын
@@stevenhoward1233 Vince had a great brain...for hiring talent and making business deals. A shame he was the kind of insecure idiot who had to constantly destroy everything he built.

The 6:05 show on TBS is what got me into pro-wrestling but after Vince moved in I stopped watching. Once he was finally gone I started watching again.
