Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior are two of wrestlings most popular superstars of the late 80s and early 90s. Many fans think of either Hogan or The Warrior when they think of the WWF, two legitimate household names who garnered a massive fan following during the glory days of the World Wrestling Federation.
Hulk Hogan had been the WWF's number 1 superstar since making his way to the company in the early to mid 80s. Towards the end of the decade, a new superstar was capturing the imagination of fans across the world, and his name was The Ultimate Warrior. While Randy Savage had gained a considerable fan following in 1988, the Warrior's popularity was so huge that it matched Hulk Hogan in terms of fan support. The decision was made then to have the WWF's 2 top babyface competitors square off in a match at WrestleMania. Billed as "The Ultimate Challenge", Hulk Hogan put his WWF title on the line against The Ultimate Warrior, a man who also put his Intercontinental championship up for grabs in the very same match. This was unprecedented, the WWF went against the grain and put 2 of their most beloved stars in the ring to go head to head. This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios takes a look at the match.

I still remember when my dad surprised my sisters and I with this PPV. We were watching something on TV that night and he casually tells my mom to flip the channel to some obscure Channel that we didnt have and BOOM Wrestlemania. I feel Hogan gets a bit too much stick at times, this match was great by anyones standards, his Japan work and the fact he was one of the very few able to carry warrior to a good match, speaks volumes.

Once he got to the top of the mountain he knew that he didn't need to do much technical wrestling. He was smart in that he knew when to give more and he knew when he could get away with less. Why go the extra mile when literally nobody wants to see that from you? He was much more than the Hulk up, leg drop and pose, but people didn't want any more than that back then. As the video said, wrestling is more than just the in-ring moves, sometimes (probably most of the time) it's about the emotion these guys can draw out of the crowd. Hogan was very good at reading and working the crowd.

Hogan was actually a very good wrestler for his size, but his gimmick under WWF meant he never had to use it, but in Japan and even against the Rock, he pulled out great matches.

Yeah, it's likely that Hogan realized at a point that he didn't need to try anymore because of his rise to superstardom, but demographics played a huge part in Hogan's decision to wrestle simpler. American pro-wrestling favored the gimmick over in-ring ability, it's why when he worked matches in Japan, he was far more technical than he let off during his time in the WWE. Hogan was smart and knew what each demographic favored, and it must also be said that he was trained by Hiro Matsuda. If Matsuda trained you, you weren't a crummy wrestler. Check out his 1991 match against Genichiro Tenryu, you can see Hulk doing drop toeholds and enziguris, it's surreal.

30 years later and I still can't believe that the Warrior won! I thought that Hogan was going to win for sure when he kicked out of the Warrior Splash and started hulking up, like he always does in his matches. I leaped out of my chair and started jumping around like an idiot when Hogan missed the leg drop and Warrior pinned him. Best. Match. Ever. (At the time, of course)

I'll be honest and admit I was genuinely shocked when I watched this live on Sky TV. Hulk Hogan seemed to win all the time and now he'd just lost. Cleanly pinned in the middle of the ring.

Yeah, Hogan matches were so formulaic back then. The finish would always be opponent does his finisher. Hogan looks done. Pin, 1, 2, Hogan kicks out does his Hulk out, big boot, leg drop, 1,2,3. I was a Warrior fan back then, I thought there was no way that they would let him beat Hogan clean. Then Warrior pressed him, and went for the pin. Hogan hulks out and i went "aargh here we go." Then the Warrior dodged the leg deop and the rest is history. I saw it at a bar. It was my 12th birthday.

I remember watching this as a kid along with my friends. We weren't really fans of Hogan. We were tuning in for and rooting for The Ultimate Warrior! Hogan was the guy that was already somewhat old news before we even became wrestling fans. The Warrior was the one who brought the real excitement for us young fans.

S. Wright the only thing that didn't make it work was the arena. Had it been something larger than life would have been better. Same case with WM 2000. They should have had that Ironman match at Mania. It was just too good. And business was more successful in 2000 than in 1991. So I don't get why not go to The Los Angeles Memorial Collaseum instead of going back to Anaheim. They had a chance to write that wrong.

You know, Hogan cops a fair bit of flack for his lack of wrestling skill. While in the US and Canada at least, his style was typically that of a brawler. He was a power wrestler who used power moves, kicks, punches, slams etc and would never have matched it hold for hold with a Bret Hart or Mr Perfect. But if you see his matches in Japan, he did put a lot more actual wrestling into his matches. The guy was actually a very good worker in the ring, a lot better than he's given credit for and he managed that night in Toronto to bring out one of what I consider to be the Warrior's two best matches (the other being his WM7 match against Savage).

This was my first WrestleMania and 11-year-old me was a big fan of both Hogan and Warrior, leaning more toward Warrior, and I remember being so hyped for this and wishing our cable company offered pay-per-view. The lead up the WM6 could have been done it the same way as WM5. Savage had the talent to carry that story for the full year ably supported by Hogan and Elizabeth. A long build up between Warrior and Hogan would have run out of legs in short time. They did the right thing with a shorter build. Face v Face was pretty much unheard off back then. That held enough interest in itself.

Fun fact. Hogan can actually wrestle. Check out his matches in NJPW. In WWF Hogan wrestled this simple style because it worked. The audience were into that style. In other promotions he bumped a lot.

Royal Rumble 1990 was my first WWF PPV. Sky TV had just started showing WWF in the UK and the popularity of it was exploding. I knew who Hogan was, but the Warrior was still a bit of a mystery to me. When the ring was cleared and the 2 men came face to face it was spine tingling! ... You knew something big was happening. I don't think the match at Wrestlemania could have been any better all things considered ... It's amazing it didn't end with some kind of run-in or controversy causing Hogan to lose.

There's more to wrestling than Indy Show high spots(which are more often botches than not btw) and having 142 mat wrestling holds and transitions. The "sMark" wrestling style that is often attempted in wrestling now is one of the reasons the product is trash. It caters to a very small, very loud niche in the wrestling fandom and literally no one else...

It was Tyson who backed out of the deal and not the WWF. Tyson and his management were so shook after the loss, and understandably so, that they wanted no part of a public appearance. Hence, the WWF was hung out to dry. They then reached out to Buster, who agreed. They even had to reshoot a lot of promos and redo animations and merchandise.

I never saw anything wrong with guys kicking out it 3 1/8 or anything like that I think it just shows a fighting spirit in them but they still lost fair and square. Hogan wasn't just going to lay there for four minutes after the pinfall. Also Ultimate Warrior was so blown up during this match he was having to do these extended holds forever it seemed like and he couldn't catch his breath if you look closely for most of the match. Lastly his combination of set up and finish moves were pretty dumb for a guy his size. The shoulder block look pretty good but the gorilla press slam didn't make a whole lot of sense because the guys usually fell on their stomach and then he would end up doing a splash on their back which didn't make any sense cuz he had to do it then flip them over. Lastly why is a guy 275 pounds has a finishing move have the big splash? It just doesn't make sense if the big boss man lands a splash but then someone kicks out of that but yet 260 to 275 pound Ultimate Warrior and you're knocked out cold

What ppl don't understand is thst warrior did have a lot more moves in his locker but cus of his gimmick he didn't use them that often. But if you go and watch all of his matches you'll see him use them.

I watched this match last month, on the 1st, to commemorate its 30th year (UNBELIEVABLE!) anniversary and I still get excited watching it! I felt like 16 year old me watching this and just being overwhelmed with what I was about to witness. One of my best friends and I watched this live when it happened, even though we actually didn't pay for the pay per view. This was back in a time that if you had cable and if you tuned in to the ppv channel, you could see the action without sounds sometimes or vice versa. That is how we were able to watch the whole show and we were stunned to see Warrior getting the rare clean pin on Hogan! I will never, ever forget how awesome that was and I was a Hulkamanic! Awesome video, Sir, as usual! Be safe!

Savage vs Hogan at WrestleMania V was bigger and more successful. WrestleMania V drew more than WrestleMania VI did in the PPV buyrate department. On top of that, Warrior didn’t draw nearly as well as the WWF was hoping he would in house shows.
