I don’t think Flair was past it in 1990 but I do think it was time for him to step back and let others main event. The reason why no one was booked as a main event heel was Flair WAS the main event heel. This would have been a good time to build the upper card and let Flair’s act refresh a bit. But instead they booked Sting into oblivion (after cutting off Luger at the knees in 1988) and went back to Flair. And still had no main event heels when Flair left!

I was just old enough to understand that there was something...off...about the whole Black Scorpion story, but young enough that the mystery villain from Sting's past dropping hints to torment the hero was captivating nonetheless. My Aunt Margie, who was the Stinger's #1 fan, wanted the Black Scorpion dead. No matter who was under the mask. When the reveal finally happened, I knew that it didn't make any sense, but couldn't quite articulate why. Any confusion on Aunt Margie's part was neatly deflected by her hatred for the man under the mask. She already hated Flair from his prior matches with Sting and her other hero, Ricky Steamboat, so her venom continued unabated. Miss you, Aunt Margie. You big ol' mark. ❤

@@NexusFantismo Oh yeah dude. I was extremely lucky to be a kid at that time and WCW was my territory and so I got to watch tons of the legends during this time from just a few feet away. The best thing to ever happen to me was when I was a kid I had a toy WCW belt with a speaker where Sting would say "WE'RE HAVIN' FUN NOW AREN'T WE". Once I was standing on the rail while Sting was fighting Stunning Steve Austin and he whipped him against it and I had to jump off to keep him from hitting me and the rail slid back a little and Austin was selling laying on it and Sting walked over and grabbed him and looked right at me and said "WE'RE HAVIN FUN NOW AREN'T WE???!!!" and dude I lost my crap so hard I literally started crying like a little girl that had just seen The Beatles! LOL!!! I also met Marcus Alexander Bagwell and The Z-Man back then too. Then a few years ago I met Sting at a Meet and Greet VIP package my wife got me for Father's Day and told him how I would always go watch him in Knoxville at the Civic Coliseum and he was like "man you DO go way back"! Papa Shango was a great gimmick that so many kids from that era remember. It's a shame that they didn't know where to go with him. Replied this to someone but I'll drop it here too: If you're confused by the scheduling of this PPV Review, don't be. This would've dropped on the 5th of the month, but it conflicted with AEW's 3-Year Anniversary of Dynamite. So we got this on the OG Classic PPV day (Saturday), and the Best and Worst of Dynamite on the 5th to coincide with the Anniversary. Best of both worlds, courtesy of the Z-Man.

The Black Scorpion was basically a proto Fiend decades earlier with no budget. The idea was there. They just didn't have the technical know how to pull it off. I think a lot of the problem was they had Sting and the Black Scorpion interact in front of a live audience. If they had done some creatively made vignettes where the Black Scorpion is using dark magic on Sting like The Fiend did with John Cena that would have worked better. Instead of the Ollie vignettes talking about nothing they did more showing of his powers and building him up that way. And any time The Steiners fought The Nasty Boys I was ALL in. I love the Nasty Boys and their just brawler, street fight style so any tag team that could match their intensity be it The Steiners (who did it the best) or Road Warriors/Legion of Doom it was a sight to behold.

Flair didn't like Sting challenging for the World Title because: 1. Flair was champion 2. Flair viewed Sting as a threat to win the championship Flair doesn't have a problem with Sid challenging Sting because: 1. Flair doesn't think Sid can win, but the match will soften Sting up for an eventual rematch with Flair. 2. If Sid does win, Flair can browbeat big dumb Sid into handling over the championship

Yeah WCW did that all throughout their VHS releases. They'd cut the first hour of the PPV to make the two hour limitations of a videotape on SP mode and then they'd erase the master tape so a lot of undercard matches are gone forever from the WCW library and thus when WWE bought WCW, they inherited the shortened PPVs. The Steiners vs. Nasty Boys tag match remains one of my fav tag matches of all time--they worked super stiff, everyone was committed, the crowd was hot--it was just awesome! Fun PPV over all, but the Sting vs Sid ending disappointed me. I loved the weekly Sid squashes where he sent jobbers out on stretchers!!

Thanks for making my Saturday better, Brian! I was a bit bummed we didn't get a retro wrestling review Wednesday, but I understand it was AEW's 3 year Dynamite anniversary, so will that slide 😆

As an 11 year old here in England, I'd only started watching the WWF the year previously. I have to be honest and say that I wasn't really aware of WCW or anything that they were doing. I thought that the WWF was the only show in wrestling. I'm so thankful to Brian for making these shows and giving me the wrestling education I missed out on all those years ago!!

The deal with the NWA was that when Crockett sold to Turner in 1988, the new company (WCW) never applied for NWA membership but kept using the name anyway for the next couple of years. The remaining NWA promoters eventually started making noise, decided to assert their legal claim to the name, and began demanding a payday for the infringement upon their trademark. WCW applied and became a member, but still made the decision to phase out the name as the year came to a close, I think partly because the NWA as people once remembered it was a thing of the past and partly because if they didn't own the name, then they weren't going to use it. The way things were, if they labeled their top wrestler as the NWA World Champion, they'd have to get approval from the NWA Board for title changes, make him available for dates outside their company, and whatever else the NWA By-Laws stipulated or risk getting sued. By only using the WCW name I think they were able to get around all that stuff

I forgot how funny this video’s cold open is. The clip doesn’t waste any of its two seconds, you get the sad poot of pyro, the Black Scorpion completely blowing his cue, and Ole Anderson making one of his weird Muppet noises in such rapid succession it’s almost hard to process what’s happening.

I was at that show and we had no clue as to what happened with the finish. From our seats which were pretty good we saw Arn and Flair at ringside then the whole "Sting" getting pinned by Sid. Then out of nowhere we see Sting hit the splash and another 3 count. Only fans at ring side had any idea of that finish.

For the team of Thomas Rich and Richard Morton, were the early stages of York Foundation, managed by Terri Runnels. Love the droning on and on naming wrestlers as Jack Brickhouse lol I was 9 years old in these days and was scared of the Black Scorpion, anytime someone was a huge threat to Sting. Sid was super scary as well. Doom vs Flair and Double A could have been a TV main event match

Two points: --Rich, Gibson and Morton were a rather close knit crew both in front & backstage. They were the NWA/WCW version of the Kique(just without the political clout)... --as a true child of the 80's(I learned to Moonwalk before I learned to actually dance), I was a card-carrying member of both The Hulkamainiacs and the The Stingers. The Black Scorpion storyline was a treat for me and personally solidified Flair as a Major heel for me. I could even see it from a character perspective: "Slick Rick" wasn't stupid. After losing his beloved Title, he'd go back and start doing research on Sting, trying to find some sort of leverage or pull over him. He practically sacrificed both Wyndham and Sid just so he'd have more time for the Mind games he was doing as "The Black Scorpion". You could even argue (in kayfab) that he paid multiple people to pretend to be the Scorpion so he'd have an Alibi and Arn(his best friend and staunchest Ally) not only knew about it, but helped along the way(which is why he & Flair were going after the Tag Titles so loudly).

As a 9 year old Sting fan in October 1990, I was invested in the Black Scorpion deal. I have in recent years , when this subject is brought back up, tried to rebook this story and how the payoff goes down a couple of months later. What could have been man.....

The black scorpion was one of my first memories of wrestling and I couldn't get enough of it, as a 10 year old I remember not being able to sleep at night wondering who it was, I can even remember watching when it was revealed that it was Rick flair which blew my mind cause Flair cut a promo claiming "when he found out he was gonna break him in half " talking about the black scorpion
