I've finally gotten around to reading "The Death of WCW" recently, and at the time of this comment I've recently finished the chapter on 1998, which contained an entertaining little bit about the main event of this show. To quote the book regarding Rodman, from page 159 of the 10th anniversary edition: *"He got in the ring and was beyond horrible, screwing up moves left and right and actually falling down on several occasions. Then he tagged out, stood on the apron, and put his head on the turnbuckle, seemingly falling asleep. Luckily, that was the best role for him. Hogan had also demanded forty-five minutes for the match - approximately forty-four minutes longer than any of the four, with the exception of Page, could realistically have wrestled and remained entertaining."*

Just went back and watched this(like I normally do in preparation for your reviews) and just like any other time I watch WCW PPVs from this era never ceases to amaze me the amount of talent and star power they had at this point. Just on this card you had Big Show, Eddie, Jericho, Luger and Nash(didnt wrestle but got involved), Mysterio, Booker T, Bret Hart, Mr. Perfect, Goldberg, DDP and Hogan. Out of that list there are 9 guys that had World Championship matches at a Wrestlemania, the only 2 that didn't were Perfect and DDP but both of them were major stars at one point. You then had talented performers like Raven, Saturn, Juvi, Kidman and Konnan(who was a major star in Mexico). And that's just the guys on the card. They also had guys like Sting, Savage, Flair, Piper, Steiner, Scott Hall and Chris Benoit not on the show. Just an unreal stable of talent and most importantly STAR power.
@mattthomas14424 жыл бұрын
As far as the PPV I got a kick out of Schiavone saying "We have the best camermen and production crew in the world" then 2 seconds later they show 2 guys working on cables around the ring. The WWE would never have that be shown on camera or during a match. Those guys would do it in between matches and if for some reason they couldnt then the camera man would make sure not to have them in the background and/or the director would cut to a different shot. By having them on screen all it does is distract the viewer and take their attention away from the wrestlers which is something "the best production crew in the world" should never let happen.

Fun Fact: DDP and Karl Malone had the same agent at the time of the match. May explain how Karl got a foot in the door.

I think the biggest mistake with the main event was have Malone and Rodman start. They should have done the tried and true teasing of Malone gets tagged in, ignores Hogan, and just points to Rodman calling him out. Hogan would tag him in, they would circle the ring, Malone would go straight for him but Rodman would run away and tag Hogan back in. Rodman would then do sneak attacks when the Ref wasn't looking. Just building up Malone finally getting his hands on Rodman. But, no! Let's spoil it right from the start. I loved WCW but my God they were the masters of fucking up a sure thing.

DDP on The Rise and Fall Of WCW about making the match with him and Karl Malone against Hogan and Dennis Rodman: Karl Malone was a huge wrestling fan and loved WCW. I was doing an autograph session in Houston, TX and we had gone to the game that night, Houston was playing the Jazz. At one of the time outs, Byron Scott told Karl that DDP is up there (in the stands) and he looked up at me and made the Diamond Cutter sign, and then he set us up with passes to go back into the locker room. I walked out and we met Karl and we just bonded immediately, and I said to him bro if you ever want to get in that ring and just workout and see what it's like, I'll show you how to do the diamond cutter, I said so why don't you come by and see me! And we exchanged numbers and that was that I knew Rodman was coming and knew that it was him and Hogan, so I went over to Bischoff's house (Eric Bischoff) and I said I got a great idea, what about me and Malone against Hogan and Rodman? He said I love that idea, get him!

I'm surprised Greene didn't try to become a full-time pro wrestler with WCW after he retired from the NFL.

In Eric Bischoff's book Cash/Controversy, he said that of all the non-wrestlers that they brought into WCW at the time (including Rodman) Green had the ability to most easily transition into a wrestling career.

I feel like Rodman either got a concussion in this match early, or he was a couple of drinks in. The dude was really good the year prior against Luger and Giant, but this year the dude couldn't stand correctly. Also the other thing I've noticed about the match was how many times Hogan would tag in Rodman, they do a double team, and Rodman would proceed to go back to the apron despite being the legal guy, leaving Hogan to continue wrestling.

Zane, you picked a really great time to become a wrestling fan. Good times.

2:07 I believe Tony Schiavone said on his podcast that these promotional posters/ads were done up more than six months in advance before anyone knew what was going to be on the show, so they HAD to be generic.

I think the best part of that opening match this one Saturn jumps off the top rope through tables And the announcers just like ignore it they don't even call it Really shows you how crazy things were in the 90s

As awesome as that Nitro was with Goldberg the decision to give that match away for free was was stupid. That was a PPV level match, they could of sold out any arena with that match and they were so desperate to keep winning the ratings, they gave away Goldberg Vs Hogan.

That Nitro was at the Georgia Dome. It was in a larger arena than the actual PPV.

Giving away that Goldberg/Hogan match on free TV was a colossal mistake. They were so worried about the ratings war that they blew their load for one night. They should've waited until Starracade '98 to put Goldberg over to make up for the previous year's main event with Sting. Instead, we got that terrible match with Nash and Goldberg, which led to the Finger Poke of Doom and the rest was history.

Bad timing aside, WTF was the point of putting a table over raven if Saturn gonna jump through it ? That logically adds nothing but pain to Himself
