One thing I always think of with this show is in the buildup when Jim Ross promoted that the show was promoted by the game Glover. Hearing Jim Ross say the game's tagline "Gotta love the glove" in NitroRad's review of that game is actually why I nominated this show.

I was rewatching RAWs from 1998 last year in honor of their 25th anniversary. It's a night-and-day difference between how strong the Nation started the summer of 1998 and how rapidly they fizzled out after SummerSlam. It was evident by the end of that summer that The Rock was becoming an increasingly bigger fish in an increasingly smaller pond (The Nation). To be honest,1998 was such a paradigm shift for the company that I think you could split it into three mini-eras. Those thirds have their own vibe. *Pre-Wrestlemania XIV. *Post-Wrestlemania through Summerslam *Post-Summerslam

The loss of main eventers were severely felt in 1998. The absence of Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels and Sycho Sid was felt big time. It felt like every main event after WM14 was some combination of Steve Austin, Mankind, Undertaker and Kane. This was somewhat eleviated by the Rock becoming a main eventer by November but Vince refusing to bring Ken Shamrock into the main event was a mistake on my opinion.

Amazing to look back at a time when they didn't trust The Rock to headline a PPV without some involvement from Stone Cold. It pretty much extended into the middle of 2000 with Triple H as well, as they added Mick Foley and Big Show and the McMahons to the WrestleMania main event, the McMahons and Austin to the Backlash main event, Shawn Michaels to the Judgment Day main event, Undertaker, Kane and the McMahons to the King of the Ring main event etc.

It's always amusing to point out that when Mankind finally won the WWF Title on the 1/4/1999 Raw he was actually wearing a JOB Squad shirt under his usual dress shirt at the time, as Mick did associate with the Squad on TV around this time. In that case one could argue that Mick was the most successful member (or, at least, associate?) of the JOB Squad!

I think the main reason that the PPVs of 98 and '99 tend to be underwhelming is that the roster was still pretty thin. You had a lot of star power and spectacle on the upper card, and definitely there wasn't a lack of flair, let's say, to the mid card and lower card acts, but they just weren't conducive to having great matches. On this PPV alone, you had the Oddities, the JOB squad, and the headbangers all having long matches. It wouldn't be until later '99 and then going in 2000 that you got more talent to flesh out the PPVs beyond the main event matches like The Dudleys, The Radicalz, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle and the emergence of teams proper like Edge and Christian, and the Hardy Boyz and so on.

I remember at one point during the "Outlaws go Corporate" storyline where the Outlaws main evented a Shotgun Saturday and Vince and Shane showed up at the end of the show (one of the only times I think Vince and Shane's characters showed up on that show too) and it was surprising because you didn't see main story characters show up on minor shows like that back in those days

Batsh*t insane sums up the build to the Undertaker/Austin match perfectly, considering the stuff they did to each other.

1st PPV I watched after giving up in 95. What struck me most as an impressionable 13 year old was how ADULT the product had become. Also, Rock v Foley is an underappreciated gem.

It’s fun hearing the nostalgic joy with which Brian gushes about this show; clearly it brings back some good feelings from his early fandom. I feel the same way thinking about when I first started watching wrestling regularly in late ‘88/early ‘89…the Demolition/Powers of Pain double turn, Big Boss Man’s face turn on the Brother Love show, the reign of the Macho King, the rise of the Ultimate Warrior…good times.

I remember a kid writing a short story for English class that he called Death Valley Driver after the wrestling move. All I remember is that it was a horror story that took the name Death Valley Driver literally.

My ex's cousin has Bell's Palsy as well and was a huge wrestling fan. He was so in love with Jim Ross and his commentary, he would always try to do a Ross impression as often as he could. 😅

Gangrel doesn't get enough credit for being such a good worker. The dude was a great ring technician who was really good at getting his opponent over. The Brood is hands down one of my favorite stables. maybe it's because i didn't have cable tv in my room and got to watch a lot of shotgun/heat and The Brood was ALWAYS on there at the time but, their entrance was legendary. the music. the red lights. Gangrel spitting blood. the vampire gimmick on the heels of Blade. such good stuff. even the mid/undercard guys had awesome stories.
