How long had he been with the company by then though and was OVW under Cornette and companys tutelage up and running yet or was that not till a touch later? I THOUGHT OVW had ramped up its game by that point. It would explain how a LOT of these wrestlers could look so seasoned and rdy to go, especially compared to a LOT of what we see nowadays, despite being rookies with mere months on main roster back then. Can't be overstated how valuable a well run training prgm like OVW was to prep these folks.

@@shadow_strike9956 You're forgetting the most important name: The Undertaker. If it wasn't for Mick Foley, you could argue Undertaker would not be the legend he became, nor would he be considered the "greatest gimmick". He was just coming off his only watchable WrestleMania match against Diesel when Foley debuted the night after WM12. Before this, he spent years in terrible matches versus Harvey's Whippleman's monsters and Ted Dibiase's stable of "bought" wrestlers. It wasn't until Survivor Series 1996 that Undertaker debuted his new look, without the big purple gloves and the magical urn, which is the gimmick that would not have gone over in the post-NWO/Attitude Era world of wrestling. Without those brutal and violent matches throughout 1996 and continuing into 1998, where would The Undertaker be today?

Before No Way Out, Mick Foley did a sit down interview for "60 Minutes." As he sat next to his wife, he said he was retiring because his body was breaking down & No Way Out was the final match of his career. So I remember being just gutted, leading up to & as I watched the ppv because I was a big FoF (fan of Foley 😅 ). I have always thought it was awkward, the way that played out. I mean, sure, most wrestling fans at the time probably didn't also watch 60 Minutes, but it seemed like something was taken from the match. Already knowing Foley was gonna lose, going into the ppv.

As always, many thanks for the shout-out, Brian! 🙂 As a teen, I was very disappointed when Foley lost the HIAC Match and was 'forced to retire,' seeing as how I couldn't stand the McMahon-Helmsley regime and having the heels run both RAW and SmackDown made the TV product almost unwatchable at times. However, it didn't take long to figure out that something was up when Trips, Foley and Show all showed up on the SNL episode Rock hosted in the lead-up to WrestleMania 2000.

I feel like the McMahon-Helmsley stuff doesn't get the same criticism as WCW and the NWO booking because they were around for a comparatively shorter period and did definitively end, whereas the NWO dragged on longer than it should have and they skipped several potential end points (Sting or Bret, for example).

I think the "Ice Cream Man" chant is because Dean Malinko was called the "Ice Man". Also I stopped watching wrestling in 1999 after being a hardcore fan since 1990. Started again in 2003. Looks like I didn't miss much but I have seen the Triple H/Cactus Jack and it's excellent.

Yes, the chant thing shouldn't have been difficult for a wrestling fan to figure out.

I started watching in Jan 2000s with WCW on Fridays on Channel 5 in the UK and WWF Sunday Night Heat on Channel 4 and this right here was to me the 1st ever PPV I ever heard of and I will never forget THAT Promo with Triple H vs Jack leading to this Hell In A Cell it to me is iconic so this brings back great memories

Ah my second ever PPV that I watched after the Royal Rumble. I loved Cactus so much, I was devestated when he lost this and never thought I'd love another wrestler... Then I got obsessed with Rock 😂. 2000 was the best year ever. Rock V Triple H was my favourite rivalry of all time. Rock favourite wrestler ever. But 2000 was perfect for a year. You say it wasn't good because DX dominated, but all that did was build the hype for Rock's win at Backlash which was the most hyped win ever. What a year. And what a time. Thanks for the nostalgia. It's my dad's 20th anniversary of passing tomorrow, and we used to watch this when I was a kid. ❤

one of the small details about this show I'll never forget once I saw it is Billy Gunn gets caught up in the ropes after D-Von doing the "suck it", yet Rikishi in the tag match comes into the ring SO smoothly considering how much bigger his legs are in comparison makes me chuckle

Mick Foley’s retirement match reminds me a lot of Shawn Michael’s. Both were chasing after something that was pretty much borderline obsessive, put their careers on the line to gain it, and went out giving us an amazing match to remember.

I like to compare the Dudleyz/New Age Outlaws match to Demolition vs. Strike Force from WrestleMania 4. Both matches are pretty similar in some respects: the hot new heel team steamrolls the fading babyface team to win the gold. Also, Gunn was actually the legal man when D-Von pinned Dogg. Just another case of WWF adding lucha rules to their tag matches whenever the script demands it, I suppose.

1. I loved the unironic use of the X-Factor lyric at the end 2. WrestleMania 2 means the decade old worst WrestleManias countdown is now complete (even though 25 kinda got retroactively redacted)

Fun fact: The weather was so bad in Hartford that the live feed was acting up during the Mark/Viscera match, specifically when Mae got to the ring. This was fixed for the Home Video VHS but it's still noticeable by looking at when the screen went black on the titantron and also because they muted some of JR's commentary since he did acknowledge the "technical problems" during all of that.

One thing that really stands out about the New Age Outlaws dropping the Tag Team Championships to the Dudley Boyz is that it felt like a passing of the torch and transitioning of eras in tag team wrestling. The Outlaws had been on top of the WWF's tag team division for around two years, but then they lost the belts to a duo that would be among the top teams for the next few years. And after the Outlaws lost the belts, they teamed up in the WWF again (at least not as the New Age Outlaws) until their comeback in 2014, when it was years after they were no longer of the generation.

I find interesting looking back, Foley's biggest long term rivals to me were the Undertaker and Triple H and both story arcs in a way ended with hell in a cell. I might be wrong but I don't recall Mick having a singles match against either man after.
