What happens when one of the most polarizing figures in wrestling history starts a brand-new organization dedicated to spreading the gospel of the Lord? I SWEAH TO GAWD ... it's Vince Russo's "Ring of Glory"!
Big thanks to Disco Inferno, James Mitchell and Vince Russo himself for helping me with this video by providing your insight. Special thanks to Cyndi Seidelman of Game Show Garbage for sending me the DVD of the first Glory show and helping get the ball rolling!

It's nice to hear someone else give Russo _some_ credit. I can't defend all of his ideas (obviously), but I'll always defend the fact that he HAD ideas. His conscious decision to make stories for everyone on the card is supremely-admirable and often overlooked. The man *definitely* shouldn't be left to his own devices, but he isn't without merit, either.
@gdanp78
@gdanp78 6 жыл бұрын
That's one of the biggest reasons why Ive always liked Russo. All the marks cry about WCW 2000. To me what I saw in 2000 was effort. Compare that to the way WWE just phones everything in now days. Storylines barely ever progress, meaningless match after meaninless match. Same guys wrestling each other over and over and over and over etc.... WCW 2000 while not everything worked and yes some of it was bad I loved that they were throwing everything against the wall to see what would stick. So it was always worth watching because it wasn't predictable and at some point something cool would happen. These days, not so much.

LEGENDARY IceMan wtf? That time you mention is before Russo worked as head writer. We are specifically referring to the period when Russo was head writer. What we are saying is that Vince McMahon was good at hearing all of Russo ideas and picking out the good ones. We have seen what Russo writing looks like without that Vince McMahon filter to sift out the crap

read my comment again. where was vince mcmahon's filter before and after russo left? Before russo came in as the head writer wwe nearly went out of business and now wwe is putting out worst product since 93-96. are you implying that Vinnie Mac's filter only worked when Russo and Ferrara was around? Russo has been head writer for a wrestling companies only for 2 years since leaving wwe, so you cant really say that his writing has been bad without vinnie mac as "filter" when 3 months that he worked for wcw as head writer ratings went up and in TNA he was writing while they were doing best tv ratings wise.

I used to write some fantasy wrestling stories and matches on finnish wrestling site some 15 years ago. At one point, I started to design a PPV where there 7 matches in card and each of them were based/themed on one of the seven deadly sins.

“Joshua sells for a day and a half...” More like three days. ;0) “So Joshua is writhing in pain and the devil laughs and gets away..?” I’m not a Christian, but I know Jesus’ bag is self-sacrifice. They could have done the book of Revelations, I guess, and turn Joshua into a monster baby face with a flaming sword that kicks the devil’s ass...

Baraka The actuality of what Christians such as myself believe is that Jesus died as a sacrifice for all mankind and knew that if he wanted us to spend eternity in heaven he had to. He asked God to forgive us for we knew not what we were doing(Gospel of John), but he still when through pure agony and in his agony lost connection to God, which is why he cried out"my God My God why have you forsaken me"

Unfortunately, in terms of business, such a promotion can only fold. As soon as mainstream organizations, relying on shock factor, profanity and sex selling tweak their product to be more family friendly, you fight a losing war. Why would a christian family guy keep going to Ring of Glory events, if he deems WWE PG era to be acceptable pro wrestling entertainment? You can't measure up to a juggernaut having more financial backbone, television coverage and a superior pool of talent. RoG as a concept can work on the long run, but its formula has to provide an unique and powerful appeal spanning far beyond playing out the religious crowd... Not just being a gimmicky wrestling show imbued with spirituality. I don't know, maybe it should be a more like a traditional product having with its own lore, with christian faith only present as secondary background? I imagine the whole Gospel thing would be hinted at mostly during promo or matches twist of fate...

I'm not a religious person but I support the faith of others so I gotta respect what they tried to do with these shows. It reminded me of this program I used to go to when I was kid in Brooklyn called Metro World Child (used to be called Yogi Bear Sunday School) we played games with religious themes, there would be fun little songs to sing, the people would dress as religious figures and act out story's from the Bible and then pastor Bill would give a sermon. It was fun and made me enjoy being a Christian and looking back at it now as someone who no longer follows a faith it makes me even more thankful because it was all on their time and on their dime and in our neighborhood we didn't get to see that kind of generosity and kindness often. I've gained a little bit of respect for Russo after watching this, he actually tried to do some good for once but as always everything he touches goes to hell *pun intended*
