So the story goes, WWE originally considered the idea of implementing MMA-style rules for the Brawl for All, but they would have had state athletic commissions stepping in to enforce policies thus that was nixed. Then they thought they could do some sort of kickboxing variant of it. But realizing Steve Blackman was planning to milk knee kicks for the tournament (and could likely pull them off considering his martial arts training), WWE didn't want a good chunk of their roster being crippled by Steve and changed it to the boxing variant milked throughout Summer 1998.

Something to keep in mind is just how weird the rules were. It was basically a mix of Toughman-style boxing and amateur wrestling. There was no ground-fighting, but a grappler could still win by spamming takedowns on his opponent, provided the takedowns were "clean" (Whatever that meant). The gloves also had more padding than what they normally use in boxing, which I think made both punching and grappling a bit awkward for everyone. Just seems like weird conditions to try to fight under.

Reason they never did much after Brawl for All for Bart Gunn is because Jim Ross HATED him for knocking out Dr.Death Steve Williams. Neither Steve Williams' nor Bart Gunn's careers ended at these points. Williams would remain in the WWF for another year feuding with Hardcore Holly and Tiger Ali Singh, he feuded with Vampiro in WCW from late 1999 into 2000 and would wrestle in NJPW for another 3 years. Bart Gunn would also have a fairly successful run in NJPW for 3 years after the infamous Butterbean boxing match.

Bart went to All Japan first and won the Tag Team Championship with Johnny Ace Laurinitis [I'm amazed he never tried to get Mike/Bart into WCW when he became one of their agents]. He a perennial main eventer only losing to the top guys [and boy did they protect/sell his Golden Left. They dropped like he shot them.]

I wasn't sure whether or not it actually was Cornette calling or Zane doing his Cornette impression. But then we got to the point where JC started running down Vince Russo, and I was like "yeah, that's him". Cornette's vocal delivery while talking smack about Vinny Ru is more unique to him than his finger prints or his genetic code.

Bart, Zak Ryder/Matt Cardona and Rusev are prime example of Vince's "You got to reach for that brass ring. You can't wait for us." line is bs. These guys have proven that if Vince and co. don't want you over you won't get over. And if you try to get over without them they will bury you.
@marcelmoreau27334 жыл бұрын
Brawl for All not worst thing in wrestling. Off top of my head: Katie Vick, Clara Lynch, Kennel from Hell, No Holds Barred movie tie inmatches, Dennis Rodman, David Arquette as Champ, Vince Russo as Champ, Judy Bagwell on pole, Tuxedo matches, Gravy Bowl matches, Divas Search, TL Hopper, Repo Man, Duke the Dumpster, New Midnight Express, Warrior in WCW, Bigshow dragged by hearst at fathers funeral, The Miz's entire career. I could go on, but 19 items worse then B4A is enough.

The Midnight Express theme as the ring tone for Cornette was awesome lol being a huge Midnight Express/Jim Cornette fan, I admittedly marked out. Also if Jim Cornette did have a son, Brian Zane could definitely pass for it.

Jim even said "Brian Zane is my son" during his podcast
That's an amazing introduction. So cool having Mr Jim Cornette himself swearing at you. You lucky devil! 😂 And spot on with the Russo impressions again.

Don't know if you will read this but is it possible if you could talk about shoot style wrestling? It was once popular and after it dropped by the rise of MMA. I understand if you don't wanna talk about it but if you wanna look for one promotion that was close to Pro-wrestling it's UWFi and their was another one that Kane was competing but cant remember.

There used to be one in the UK that would get on the BBC that was submission wrestling. Basically Olympic Style Freestyle wrestling in a ring. A Hart competed in the 80s, either one of Bret and Owen's brothers or cousin but there was a connection. This was the BBC's answer to Joint Productions on ITV with Big Daddy, Kendo Nagasaki and Giant Haystacks (Loch Ness in WCW) actually you should look at British wrestling of the 70s and 80s. Not least Adrian Street who is probably the most important wrestler you have never heard of.
