Wrexham November 4th 2024. Snapshots of life in the Wrexham town centre today. Very cold, it was 10c and becoming misty towards the end of the evening.

Thanks Tom. 1. I have yet to see a big city in Canada create artistic metal poppies to put in a garden - great idea! 2. That was a surprise to see the plural word “divans” on the walkway sign in a Welsh city. It is the same word we use in French for a sofa. But it is not used in the English world of North America. 😊

Do you speak French a lot where you are? I always thought it was quebec that spoke it in Canada.

@@WrexhamAFCfanzone - No. I don’t get to speak it at all here in Vancouver. There will be the odd time, 1-2x year, I might cross paths with a fellow Quebecker who lives here also or a summer tourist and they might happen to be speaking in French at that moment and I might get a second to say “Bonjour” or say in French with a smile “it is nice to hear a fellow French Quebecker speak”. 🍁🍁🍁 But because they are the two official languages in Canada, and as you saw yourself, every product label, instruction pamphlet, etc is in both languages for all 10 provinces’ and 3 territories’ retail shelves.

So does the Canadian French speaking accent resemble the French way of French speaking, if that makes sense? Or does it sound like a North American speaking French?

@@WrexhamAFCfanzone - Yes and no. It depends where you were brought up in Quebec - a province that is huge so there will be different dialects just like in the UK, AU, and NZ. You always hear how Texas is a big state… well not in Canada as the province of Quebec is 2.5x times bigger than Texas even though most live in the southern end. The French did scatter some, towards the east, after French explorers sent, in turn, by Kings Louis XIV, XV, and XVI came over and landed in the future Quebec City and Montreal (via going down the St. Lawrence River) and declared the whole area covering about 300 miles as “New France” (in French of course). I say all this because - as the French population grew for over 250 years… some settled in The Maritime provinces. Then when The British invaded (for the abundance of natural resources), they booted out all the French out (specially from the Maritimes and gave these island provinces UK names). The French Canadians, in turn, got on boats and fled further south down the St. Lawrence River, that gave way to a tributary river that led to the Mississippi River to their destination of New Orleans, Louisiana. Why? Because it was briefly owned by France which is a separate other history lesson. There the French speak took on new dialects and sounds that became different from its’ original source specially from The Maritimes who were known as Acadians or French Acadians. So the Canadian French people are half responsible for the French heritage of NOLA. I have been to NOLA (for short)- it is a fabulous rich history city with the food being out of this world which happens to be very true. I didn’t mean to get this long but it is a fascinating bit of history that most Americans don’t even know about. 🙂

Interesting and I never realised Quebec was so big. I know what you mean about dialects, here in the UK there are so many different accents. Brits invaded Canada too as well as USA, we used to be a bit bad ass LOL Seriously though I knew New Orleans had French influence but was never sure why. Thanks for the history, it makes more sense now.
