Wrist Elbow Strike
Beginner Staff Spinning Tutorial
In this video, we learn a funky little trick that is excellent for both contact staff and martial arts vocabularies.
In Part 1, we talk about the elements involved in this trick: the handroll and the elbow roll. It's important to drill each of these pieces before moving on to Part 2.
If you missed my Handrail tutorial from the Zero to Fishtail series, you can check it out here: • Handrolls - BEGINNER S...

A warrior girl brought my memory back, when I was young I like to play with staff and always accident hit my head, elbow, knee and ankle. Sometimes embarrassed in front of people but fun experience, I still like to play with it sometimes.

Love this skill. My favorite one so far, and you can reverse it and end up where you started. Elbow then wrist, it looks so fluid and gravity defying. When you go in then back out. Like a breath move.

Hello Ms. Smith! I just want to give a big thank you for all your tutorials on staff manipulation. I found your channel a few days ago and tried this wrist elbow strike with my bo staff. It was harder than expected but now after 3 days of constantly watching this and other videos I finally am able to do this. Greetings from Germany!

I have some basic practice but this move is so hard. I just keep hitting my forearm and elbow... :D It happens so fast, there is no time to think what to do. :P Edit: I kind of got this too. Michelle, I think the key is to grab the staff closer to the upper end, so when it has to spin around the bent arm the longer part will be above, so it just falls into the spin. It's easier than feed the spin in the middle of the spin, because at first people don't have the skill to do that. It's just my personal experiencve and opinion. Edit2: Now i can do 5 in a row with my right hand, but i can't do it with a lower grip like you showed, the staff speeds up too much and i can't roll it to my bent arm and also, it loses it's momentum before the end.

Oh man this took me a couple hours over three or four sessions to get. Had to watch this video a few times. I kept instinctively grabbing with the same hand I was rolling off of and when I stopped doing that it just kept bouncing around and dropping. I'd get tired with the right and switch to the left and keep trying then switch back. But once it clicked oh man that was sweet! This 61 year old jumped and grinned like I was a 10 year old. FUN! Got it with the left hand/arm first which is very weird for me. Outstanding instruction!
