Fantastic easy explanation of mainspring. Very satisfied. My question is why some of the watches are very loose or stiff to handwind? Is it because of the thickness or length of the mainspring?

Old carbon steel mainsprings have many downsides and do not last long. That is why they were replaced. They rust, they also become set and loose their power. They also break from winding and unwinding stress. Just because you wind it up and it “runs” does not mean the old mainspring is good.
