This is a great information. I have been using Claude a bit differently and even used it as a hack to write some training material for work.

When working with AI there are a few very important things to know: 1. AI is inaccurate, and sometimes makes stuff up (in a very convincing way) when it doesn't know the answer. It would be great at Balderdash. 2. Writing words on a page is not what makes a novel good. Just like using a story structure isn't what makes a novel good. There is a lot that goes into being an author. AI is only good for brainstorming and word vomit. Don't get me wrong, it's incredibly useful. Just don't expect it to write a best selling novel for you. 3. Being an author is about loving the work. No one writes to make money... or they shouldn't. You'd be more successful starting a bad garage band than being an author. As an example, most indie authors will spend in the neighborhood of $1,000-$6,000 to get their book published (professional editing, professional book cover, advertising, beta readers, etc.) Editing alone (which is non-negotiable if you want to be successful is going to run you $300-$6,000 depending on the type of editing you do.) You are going to have to spend this on every single book. Now how much do indie authors make on their books? Crickets... not kidding. You'll be lucky to break even after several years. It takes time and a lot of work + money to build a fan base. You aren't going to start making any money really until you've got 10-20 QUALITY books out and you've put in the time and money to get your fanbase. Even then, mid-listers usually still need a full-time job to subsidize their writing hobby. So, if writing with AI is still exciting to you, then welcome to a really great hobby. If your bank account is screaming to run, then you'd better listen to it.

All good considerations. What I recommend using the AI for in this video is akin to “copy work” - a practice many greats have recommended - where you literally hand copy word for word to learn the style. AI certainly can use the style, but it’s up you to use your human skills to make the content interesting. AI is a tool, not a magic wand… yet.

@@aiwritingschool an excellent writing use case for AI is auditioning your character. Brandon Sanderson suggests this (though he didn't mention AI it works great.) Whenever you make a character, spend a couple of hours auditioning them to really get inside the head of the character and learn to see through their eyes. AI can be great to help with this. Just tell it everything you know about the character, then say "You are . Adopt their persona, and respond only using natural language as they would speak it." Then put it in a bunch of different scenarios and talk to it like you would the character. Get an idea of how the character would react, or speak in those situations.
