This is a pretty good re-cap video for the original series, the only part I feel they got wrong was at 24:28 when he said Kratos “reluctantly” let Pandora go. It may just be Kratos’ voice actors delivery, but it always looked like Zeus’ goading words actually got to Kratos, made him see red, and lunge at Zeus instinctively. After Pandora sacrifices herself, Kratos calls out her name with shock in his voice. I think it’s meant to parallel Kratos’ daughters death; an innocent Kratos wanted to protect killed as a direct result of his blind rage.

The games came first, then they make comics or novels, to explain side stories. For instance that barbarian in the first game, was just some powerful warlord who bested Kratos, then they made a comic to add additional information. Usually comics and books are for worldbuilding or lore, additional info that game developers couldn't put in the game or thought of it later to expand the story.

I very much enjoyed the first season. -I'm not surprised that you found the story's creation myth to be familiar; the "war in heaven" is a popular trope. -I think the "Death, destroyer of worlds" is a reference too the "Bhagavad Gita" another classic source of mythology. The problem with turning game franchises (as well as comics,books,etc) especially in this day and age is the the shorunners and writers either dont understand the source material and fail to do it proper justice or as recently shown,they purposely choose to alter the source material because they don't like something about it and they know better than even the experts that know it best/created it. Also Hollywood always has to put a spin on everything. Cant stay true to it without altering something....

Funnily enough God of War IS getting a show but they are skipping past the Greek saga (most assume it will be done in flashbacks) for reasons not stated yet since the project is still in the very early phases Also yeah Last of Us Part 1 is ps5 & the original is ps3/ps4 while the God of War games were originally ps2 & psp (a portable system) until the last game so visually the difference is light night and day. Some games are known a lot for their visuals while a lot of games, especially older series, are looked back to so fondly because gameplay (of course, if you play a game when it comes out the nostalgia will help you forgive graphics not looking like they do today). For example, people love GTA San Andreas but because all the chaos you could do, the story, the extra activities, and how well you can customize characters. But before GTA IV, the series was known to not look pretty rough (when I was younger I assumed it was because it was such a big world but the 4 came out and was such a huge difference)

The God of War series has a cool story in the first three that plays with Greek mythology, but is very ‘early 2000’ angry guy, revenge story. The 2018 God of War and the sequel GoW: Ragnarok story takes the original three as a base, and tells an amazing, emotional journey and so many great characters. When you play God of War 2016 & Ragnarok. A lot of what’s in this video will get referenced. The visuals in the new GoW games are so beautiful - equal or better than TLOU. I think it’s easier to adapt a game’s story into a series than a movie, which is more often the case. You have so much more time for story telling in a game and series. Movies need to condense too much. TLOU’s story was also more structured like a show. Which must have made that an easier adaptation. ARCANE is another example.

GOW was always an amazing and emotional journey with amazing characters, the only thing 2018 and Ragnarok did was dumb down the gameplay and make it "cinematic" for the modern mainstream. I liked 2018 and Ragnarok but the story is good at best, is just that is competently executed and directed. I recommend watching "GOD OF WAR WAS ALWAYS DEEP YOU COWARDS!" by Endless Jess

The comic book gives some extra info, but if you can play gow 1, 2 and 3 that is a better base. Kratos gets tricked by Ares into killing his family. Also Athena in God of War does NOT say the gods will take away Kratos' nightmares, but forgive them which Kratos wrongly implies as his nightmares being taken away. Betrayal after betrayal fuels Kratos' revenge. Also Pandora remembers him of his daughter. A month late, and only a minor comment you made, but always remember that good graphics are not what make a good game. They can definitely enhance them, but some of the greatest games ever were made during a time where the visual technology was limited. Gameplay and storytelling are what’s important. Granted I have complained about graphics before, but it’s because I’m certain that the company that makes that particular franchise is cutting an absurd amount of corners despite making loads of money. The technology is there and they have the money, but they won’t take advantage of it.

The reason why this video has so many views is because of people who haven't played the original series. Witcher 3 and Fallout 3 are the only other franchise's apart from GoW 2018 where I've witnessed gamers who have never played the previous games pick up the latest game within that franchise. To a lesser extent, Final Fantasy, maybe RDR2 as well. This is a franchise that does help if you've played the previous games but so many have gone right into the 2018 game. I don't include the PSP games which is why I don't really like these videos that start with the creation of the Furies. And it's not because they're not good games, they're definitely enjoyable. But they're just filler to sell PSP's and were created after the canonical games were done. Zeus saying to Athena that she should've chose the other one was an indication of Deimos. So as far as the future of the franchise, it looked they were going to make a sequel, not a prequel when talking about Deimos story. So all the backstory in those PSP games were made up on the spot. Most people have a rudimentary knowledge of Greek gods. The story isn't that deep. You can start with 1 to 3 and you wouldn't miss a thing about Kratos' story. To me, Kratos' story starts with his deal to Ares, the murder of his family, and the curse placed upon him with his family's ashes. That's the core of what GoW is about and the reason for his vengeance. Everything else is rather redundant.

God of War does some interesting things with mythology. Firstly the entire story of the Greek Saga is based off of two myths. Their was a Myth where Ares and some other Gods wanted to overthrow Zeus and theirs a separate myth where their was a Prophesy that a son of Zeus would one day overthrow him. In Greek Myth Zeus manages to defy both possible Coups to his power. However in God of War it is a story that asks “what would happen if Zeus didn’t stop it in time?”

Although It wasn't an option on the poll red dead redemption 2 is honestly a game I think HannaH should try, it can be quite a time-sink, however before I tried it I didn't think I could get emotionally attached to a character or game franchise, it is not only a visual masterpiece but also storytelling masterpiece, I have never (and probably will never) see any game like it in terms of quality, fun and content.

Plenty of games have been adapted to anime and TV shows. It is more hit or miss in the anime context and the TV context is too rare to even say. The movie context is much more common and generally fails for three reasons. Because its a long form storyline being shoved into 2 hours like most failed book adaptations, because the gameplay is what really made an otherwise okay story work better(i.e. it only works as a game because it takes adavantage of the medium), or because they changed everything and its a complete bastardization of the source material. Though a good example of it done right is the first Silent Hill movie. They took parts of Silent Hill and made something in that style of horror that mostly worked and simply adapted the rest to works well in a movie. Not as well as the games but enough to make it a good horror movie.

Video game media often sucks because they usually show no respect for the source material. Last of Us works because they trusted the source material and stuck close to it. Majority of the time TV and Movies get ahold of video game IPs and actively try to change the story for whatever reason. I think cutscene compilations probably have more views then some of those terrible video game movies.

I don't care what anybody says, normal difficulty is the intended way to play. On easy, you only need one thing, on hard, you only can do one thing (hyperbolically, of course). It can be too easy or too hard, but still what I think is the intended way to play.

You cosplay as Athena would be fire tbh also side note after GOW Ragnarok ppl asked Christopher Judge (MoCap and Voice actor for Kratos in GoW 2018 and Ragnarok) if he would be interested in portaying Kratos in a Live Action Adaptation of the GOW games, he says he's down but ppl are not agreeing since He's black (Christopher Judge) and kratos is greek, but since he's gon be covered in ashes of his dead family does it matter? He already sounds like him, looks like him (seriously he's fkn JACKED @ his Instagram), and is a great actor. Anyways this was peak Gaming appreciation at its finest, happy to see a non gamer (a writer) appreciate the story of the gory hack and slash game, i agree with everything you say and all im gon say is your gonna enjoy GoW 2018 (and if you decide to, play Ragnarok) you'd enjoy it too, anyways thats all on my end Hannah. In actual Greek mythology Kratos was a actual minor deity and a violent FANBOY of Zeus, he hyped up every bad thing Zeus did to other gods and to humanity.... I like the GoW version of Kratos compared to the actual mythos of Kratos Edit: Athena is in GoW 2018, read God of War: Fallen God comic series before you play GoW 2018

Genuinely had a little "proud of you" moment when you said you finished you first game on normal difficulty. And yes i actually joined you in the "I WANT EVERYTHING" ohh on the listening to Greek mythology comment, "The myths and legends podcast" trust me you'll love it. I listen to a new story every week ;) (i hope you do the God of War Ragnarok game after 2018, ragnarok is AMAZING)
