These home videos with just a guitar are gold. We get to see what she just, at the moment, deciding where to take the song next. She perfectly places the onset and then with that vocal fry she sculpts the texture and shape of each and every note. It’s incredible as if it were a stone or hardwood that you coulld touch . Ciao, Paolo. Beautiful reaction to one of my favorite songs. Angelina’s voice is mesmerizing, and she is able to handle these mature lyrics so gracefully. Her interpretation is just as important as the vocal tools she brings to this beautiful song. For me-when Adele sings this, we feel her pain. When Angelina sings it, we understand that the lyrics about life’s lost opportunities are about each of us. Angelina makes such immediate contact with her listeners. Adele is singing about herself-Angelina is singing to each of us. We feel that connection from the first notes, and we’re hooked. I love Adele, both as a singer and as a fabulous songwriter. She does not have Angelina’s vocal tools, however. I don’t know any singer who does. In this impromptu jam session, Angelina does not sing every note perfectly, but it’s easily the best version I’ve ever heard. You said it, this was recorded without any rehearsal. Her long comparing guitarist in Norway said her first take is always magic 🪄 And she loves to slow down Songs to give her more space for her interpretations 🎉 Out of an interview with the guitarist he told it was always spontaneous which Song they will do.

Your observations are just as good as your explanations - I always like your reactions. Aside from the three things you mentioned, Angelina is also a master of empty space and the best way to do that is to slow it down (much slower). Adele is a great pop singer, but her voice often feels sharp, sometimes cold too. Angelina as a jazz singer has more tools at her disposal to make it sound rounder, softer, warmer, which is why the pain probably sounds more introverted than in the original. Another fan once said it like this: Comparing Adele to Angelina is like comparing an upright good quality piano to a full church organ for complexity and richness of tone.

You are right. This, and all of the home videos with Ivan are spontaneous and unrehearsed. She was 12 in all the songs with Ivan. I'll attach two interviews which give good perspectives of how Angelina works. She creates the "gold" standard for this song and in my opinion definitely upgrades the original. Adele, has written many beautiful songs for Angelina, love Adele, but this far better. ... e contemporaneamente sta leggendo i testi... come hai giustamente notato queste registrazioni sono fatte con i chitarristi che andavano a casa sue e insieme sceglievano le canzoni che nessuno di loro di solito aveva suonato prima e mentre il chitarrista studiava lo spartito Angelina imbastiva la sua interpretazione, normalmente la registravano alla prima prova, a meno che lui non avesse sbagliato qualcosa (come testimoniato dei chitarristi). Sembra avere la musica nel sangue e a seguirne naturalmente i ritmi modificando la trama musicale a seconda della sua sensibilità ed empatia. Tende spesso a rallentare la dizione, come per dargli più sapore e permetterci di gustarla meglio. Grazie Paolo per la bella reazione/analisi. 💛🧡❤

Hello again, Paolo. I really love your reactions to Angelina. Your inputs are very much appreciated. Angelina was 12 years old here, just like you said. The guitarist is Ivan Mendez, and he would come to Angelina once in a while to talk music. And you are correct, per an interview with Ivan, these recordings were never planned in advance. They would just come across a song they both liked, and he would find the chords while she was reading the lyrics. All the recordings you see with these two are the result of a one take recording, or in rare occasions two. Ivan also said that if they indeed needed two takes, he was always the one to blame...lol A rule of thumb for you is that whenever you see these 2 perform together, Angelina was ALWAYS 12. Never 11 or 13. Happy Easter!
