It’s clear that Martin Amis‘ life has been even more wildly captivating as his novels. In his new book, Inside Story, which he calls a “novelized autobiography.” Amis returns to his great influences in his life- to his beloved friend Christopher Hitchens, to his mentor and literary idol, Saul Bellow, and to the great poet, Philip Larkin. And of course to his father, Kingsley Amis. And there are of course the women and sex.
This novel- or autobiography- which toggles between his real life friends and family, and the fictionalized characters who move his own extraordinary story forward, give us a most direct perspective, a most personal insight via a novel, into who Martin Amis really is. Amis knows better than anyone how to tell a great story. And his Inside Story is full of his searing wit, and wrenching tenderness.
Steve Martin. One of the funniest writers on the planet. One of the funniest actors on earth. A great musician. A wonderful composer and playwright. A television series creator. So why not tackle something new? In A Wealth of Pigeons, a book created with Harry Bliss, cartoonist for The New Yorker, Steve and Harry collaborate on one-panel cartoons and captions that are, not surprisingly, really really funny.

Love you Martin, incredibly tender to hear you talk about your goodbye, you've been an incredible mentor to me for many years now, your emotional insight and wisdom has profoundly helped me, you will be terribly missed, at-least by me.

I really enjoyed this. Got a little mad on Martin's behalf when you took issue with his wanting to go to the bathroom though! The man is 71! Let him do his thing.

Maddening how Steve doesn’t let Martin finish his sentences.

Steve is bright, and pertinent, but the interruptions are tiresome.

59:03 "I wish I had some explanatory essay about it (laughter)" every french kid has read Bergson's essay on laughter, and thenceforth becomes the spoiler of every joke at social gatherings. I hope Amis gets his hands on that one "Le Rire" because it's actually very interesting. Every philosopher has also written on laughter and comedy throughout the millennia.

Steve Martin makes dozens of very funny responses and comments during this interview. He should go into comedy. I once met MA in San Francisco. I said, "I can't believe you're not 10 feet tall considering all your big ideas." He said, "5 foot 7." I said, "Bullshit. Fucking 5 foot 4." He actually laughed.

Did other great writers have to endure this barrage of cross examination. Orwell , Huxley ,Nabokov? How tiresome demanding and debilitating it must be . If this great comic wants the secret of writing he surely has decades of work ahead ?
