I'm a voice actor who also writes fantasy fiction. As I write, I go back and read it as an audiobook narrator through my mic. When I do that, I find my flaws, and hear how it flows in my own ears. I've rewritten many scenes after doing that.

This sounds a little bit like what authors used to do in the 1800s/early 1900s? Alexander Dumas, Charles Dickens, etc. used to publish serials in the newspapers - and then would compile everything and publish as a full-fledged novel. With newspapers dying, this could be a viable alternative.

I’ve been kinda hemming and hawing about doing a fictional podcast, and this really helped me decide to just do it! It’ll probably take a while since I want it to be an actual audio drama, but it’s good to know early and just start.

I’ll do one. I did my own audio reading of the first chapter of my first book and enjoyed making the ‘small’ video... turned out to be 52 minutes. Lol But I want to do more and read other books I am working on... so yeah. Lol

I did improvational,dramas/comedies skits on my podcast couple of years back. Realized later that they each could actually become audio series via podcasting. I’ll have to go and revisit and polish up. Haven’t been on the platform in a while since they’ve (anchor.fm)upgraded. You inspired me to learn its new functionalities and go with it.. thanks.

+Theresa Clark The improvements in iOS 11 were pretty major, no longer did podcasts have to be released in reverse time order. You can tell Apple your podcast is a serial and you can specify some episodes as special editions or full/normal. It ain’t perfect but it’s a better scene for storytelling out there than it was 5 years ago.

This is a great idea! I never knew fictional podcasts existed until last night. I'm definitely making some changes to my current podcast. I have a poetry podcast (wokewordsforthesoul) being both a poet and writer, I always wanted to write a novel. Like you, I'm an anxious person and the faster feedback of what podcasts provide is gold. How do you incorporate sounds and music into your storytelling to make it good? What would you recommend?

The question becomes liability…if you read an unfinished work are you liable if listeners give advice for your book. Are they then owed royalties when your book is published?

Hey man, love your Channel. I have been struggling for a couple years on this one story that I want to write. At first I thought it was going to be a novel but now I might be thinking that it wants to be a story podcast and that's why it's causing me so much trouble. Would you say writing it out novel wise is the best way to go first and then try and adapt it into a podcast? I would ideally also want to either narrate or be a character in the podcast. Do you have a podcast of your own that I could listen to?

Hi there Ckatmyla. These are some really great questions and I'm going to do a follow up video on the the Problems with Running a Fiction Based Podcast. I will hopefully shed some light on the more execution and format type questions in just a few days. Writing the novel first or podcasting it as-you-go is really a matter of personality and ability to not write yourself into a corner. Can you wait a long time to get feedback, to get it out there and feel like it has a life in the world? I can't. I'm not wired that way. I need a quick production/release schedule and podcasting is perfect for that, as is KZbin. There are some pitfalls to podcasting fiction (more on this in upcoming video). If your story is really important to you, something that will shape how you feel about yourself, then I would proceed with caution and adjusted expectations. There is a chance you could start putting out the first chapters of a story through a podcast and there won't be a lot of downloads or some careless listener leaves a review or comment that isn't so friendly. Then your feelings about the project may change, you might get down and think the whole thing isn't worth writing. Of course this is non-sense. Whatever you are working on, is worth working on. I can't encourage you enough to push into your writing and into your story. It is worth while. Last thing I will say about podcasting fiction, is the listeners like to feel that they are part of the journey. That the podcast isn't just some medium you used instead of audible but that you choose it because you don't know exactly what's going to happen, where it's going to go and the listener gets to be a part of that journey. There's a lot you can do on a podcast to support this, with bonus episodes and behind the scenes stuff. If I had a finished novel that I loved, or had the patience to finish one and edit it, without releasing the work in progress parts. I would probably do the voice over myself for distribution on audible and spend the rest of my efforts marketing it. If I had a good story, where the plot beats were somewhat solid or I felt like I could avoid writing myself into a corner, and I lacked patience (which I do) and it wasn't "that one project that defines who we are for a time" and I felt that the story lent itself to podcasting (stories with excessive flashbacks, span long, long periods of time or have lots of characters require extra consideration) then I would podcast it. If I had an idea for a serial, recurring characters with raw but tried and true story lines, I would podcast that too. ...but that one book, the one that's part of your heart...I'm not sure I'd release that in the way podcasting demands. Unless I was very confident it was new, exciting and really really good, then I'd make sure my marketing chops could support it. Just my two cents. When in doubt of how to publish something, pause and write more. Don't let distribution woes derail your current effort.

It's tempting. I love the suggestion. I've been writing on fictionpress for a while but would love to try this. I think I'd like to find more story podcasts just to hear examples of how others do it. I don't use apple music. Any suggestions how I can find them?

Hey Phantom. There seems to be a few categories of fiction podcasts. I would loosely categorize them as produced and unproduced. A produced podcast is going to be like an old school radio drama, at the minimum it will have sound effects and music. Often it will have a cast of voice actors. Produced podcast are, well, expensive to produce. Some examples: Mars Patel, Wolverine: The Long Night (Marvel). Then there is the unproduced style. More like an audiobook, maybe some intro music but then its just a straight read. You can listen to my take on this by checking out the Are We Bored Yet podcast's "Story Starter" episodes, I've written 7 or 8 of these. You can look for podcasts that apple recommends alongside these for other ideas, but their isn't a ton of them because traditional logic would state if you are going to put in the effort you might as well make it an audible book or try and get in published. Traditional logic has a good point. Best of luck.
