Pick the brain of acclaimed Japanese-British author Kazuo Ishiguro whose novel "The Remains of the Day" won the Booker Prize for Best Fiction in 1989. In this 1995 video from the University of Washington with Upon Reflection host Marcia Alvar, Kazuo talks about his writing process, expectations and how coping with failure amidst national changes in culture became a common theme in his work.

What a terrific interviewer! One of the best I've ever heard. She listens closely and the listening follows the author's points so well that we get a richly detailed look into the author's ideas and perceptions. Just great!

Indeed. Time is running out, day by day. The individual has one fewer days to become the idealized self. At some point, there simply isn't enough days to make that journey. The result is an embittered elderly. Life is a race against time to die truly fulfilled.

Seek to help others and every day you will have the chance to feel fulfilled. The great folly is to view happiness as a destination when in fact it is merely a process.

Funny how 60-odd Kazuo quite obviously revisited this interview for the material to his Nobel speech.

An interviewer who has actually read the book! The anti-Charlie Rose! Also, the author seems like a really nice guy.

The Unconsoled is certainly his best novel, although it's difficult to get into.

One of my favorite authors/celebtities/role models wish I could meet in real life. So far I've met Venessa Redgrave, Ashley Judd, George Clooney, Chelsea Clinton, Kofi Annan, Avril Lavigne, Anastasia, Tim Mcgraw, some comedians and a few local sci-fi and fiction writers and independent filmmakers in my hometown.
