You can also use a random number generator that goes between 1 and 8 to pick which note in the scale to play in conjunction with your dice roll. To generate a random number between 1 and 8, just use the randbetween function in a spreadsheet.

i made my own rules based off of this (don't worry, it's not for the contest) here they are Rules must have 8 measures of using only the d6 and the d12, then 8 measures of only the d8. if there are no chugs in one measure when using the d8, roll the d6 once in the beat of every other measure. D6 for # of chugs D12 for ambient notes (16th notes) D8 rules 1 - triplet + 2 chugs 2 - two triplets 3 - dissonant chord 4 - silence 5 - dissonant slide 6 - squeal 7 - quick riff/run 8 - drum fill (roll d4 for # of measures)

DM: The tavern patrons look to be eager for you to play your strange instrument, a new 7 stringed lute, first of its kind and tuned to something as conceivably low as many a bard would have it. Metal Bard: I'll show them what I can do with it. DM: Roll d20 for Performance check. Metal Bard: Nat 20. DM: Now roll d12 for effectiveness. Metal Bard: 12. DM: As you start to play, a drummer behind you takes up his position seated behind you, a burly but gentle fellow, another lute player sits beside you, her slender fingers ready to dance upon the frets and her beautiful face nodding towards you. You begin and slowly but surely the patrons bang their steins to the beat of your song, some even form a mosh pit in the middle of the tavern and you notice your party members, the fighter, the rogue, the ranger, the paladin, the wizard, the warlock, the sorcerer, the monk, the artificer, even the cleric and especially the barbarian join in, the fighter's long hair in a windmill, the barbarian's passive yet energetic dancing lighting up the pit, the wizard casting minor illusions everywhere, the paladin and the cleric shining their lights in the air, the ranger and her wolf familiar surfing the crowd along with the monk, the sorcerer and the warlock and the artificer clanging his tools together to the beat.
