I initially wanted to be a screenwriter too. But realistically, it's just so restricting, way too corporate, near impossible to succeed at, people don't enjoy reading them, and ultimately I just wasn't any good at it.

Relatable. Trying to create something you love while the world is telling you why it's not good enough is very limiting

Yeah, I definitely feel it with the visual and the writing thing. Been writing all my life, and drawing all my life as well. I used to fill composition notebooks with stories of my own creation, or adapt thing like Sonic and all the things I loved as a kid. I did comics when I was in middle/high school, kinda combining those two loves. But that urge to do one, the other, or both is a constant tug, and I really feel you with it haha. I wanna do everything cuz it all looks so dang cool!

I've always floated different ideas around of what sort of writer I wanted to be -- started out with journalism (editor-in-chief of my HS newspaper, literally my minor in college), fooled around with screenwriting -- but I've always come back to poetry and prose. It's just what I've been good at the longest. So it was neat to kind of extend myself and try those other branches of writing, but I think back on when I wanted to be a journalist or a screenwriter, and I cringe a little haha. Now I just need to get my poetry and prose published, and we'll really start talking. 😅

Interesting, you can always learn. I myself am an industrial designer and artist and have always wanted to tell stories and animate. Animation is a lot of work, so I settled on making 2 children's books. I still have a tonne of work to do before my writing becomes good. You can only get good at it through doing it. And listening to savage books, you have lots of great content here.

The frustration with how restrictive Hollywood writing can be is how George.R.R.Martin ended up writing a Game of thrones. If you want to get into game development try learning Godot or unity. Both are good for beginners and have plenty of resources to learn from.

Scripts by definition pretend to be movies... they lack autonomy. And that is their sin...

Thinking of a result, thinking of a market, thinking of a targeted audience... takes away any freedom of any creation. For it becomes a product... instead of something real.

Hoping to get your thoughts into somebody else... is just hubris. Eliciting an emotion is art.
