To much line out, little control, should be short crossed span right under the bow, in effect you are the bow thruster and the stern tug keeps it straight and acts as the brake. Thats why she is yawing all over the place. That's the difference between sea towage and harbour towing.

I bet towing that is a lot harder than it looks

It is. Towed ships have a tendency to sheer off in one direction or the other. The best way to tow a large ship like this, would be to utilize a "tail boat", either a push boat or a large tractor tug to help her stay straight.

An example of how NOT to tow a vessel in a canal! I hope Australia get's a discount on the cost of the vessel for that inept towing job..

Stern tug looks like it lost its line, the ship looked like it was going too fast...

Agreed... there are no words adequate to describe such incompetence at handling a beautiful new ship valued in excess of $100m.

I take it, the tow contract went to the lowest bidder?😅

This is a big mistake, where a boat towing in a narrow river channel must have a short rope, not a long rope like in this video

By the towed vessel's meandering 'all over the place', it is obvious that there is no tug on the stern, controlling the swing of rhe stern. As another reader pointed-out, the towing pendant is too long, and they are proceeding too fast. Poor planning and seamanship at all levels.

These guys a totally and utterly incompetent. As an Australian tax payer that will fund the cost of operating this vessel, I am appalled. Damen, who are the shipbuilders are negligent. To tow this vessel correctly, Damen only had to look at the videos on KZbin of how the Meyer Yard at Papenburg tow the largest passenger ships fm their Yard down the River Ems though narrow canals and bridge openings, shallow narrow river with sharp turns to the sea. They do it with two tugs, one to push and one affixed to the bow athwartships to steer, with the vessel towed astern with towing blocks and sheaves fixed onto the bow and stern.

They had a trailing tug connected. However, I think in was underpowered for a two down stream. Furthermore it might have improved the handling using the GOG on the deck.

I guess work PFDs are optional on deck of a tug in an active tow in Romania?

I think the term captain is flouted about too much... A true captain is navy trained who has spent 20 years as a commander in charge of a ship... A pretty long drawn out apprenticeship but at least in the end we know he's earnt that 4th stripe...

All have opinions but you do not know what really happened (all experts). At the well of the towing TUG were two river pilots and they f.... up. Captain was just assisting. Also in the AFT was another TUG but him instead to steer the the ship (pull) he was pushing and of course lead the ship to grounding. Just for your chill, ship suffered just some scratches on the paint, ice knife is very thick.

That's the risk when you use 1 tugboat, there should be also one at the stern.

Who cares about the vessel... What about the potential loss of life on the docks in the river??? Is there even a stern tug??
