The technical definition of a crash is a landing from which you cannot take off again. Even if you lost a couple of armor blocks from the wing, if you could still fly it then it was just a rough landing.

Very entertaining! The ability of a programmable block to hold on to a reference to a block on a grid after detaching from that grid is a well-known exploit and is how people made certain types of guided missiles before inter-grid communication (IGC) was added to the scripting api. I had assumed it would have been fixed by now, but apparently not! IGC can be used to achieve anything that the exploit can be used for, but IGC requires having an antenna and a programmable block on each grid. However, connections achieved using the exploit will be lost if the world is reloaded or if the script is recompiled for any other reason, so the exploit is limited to relatively short-term applications.

One thing you could do to make your runway less painful to use is extending it using a piston with panels/catwalks that slide over the current blocks, sort of how Kanajashi made the ramp to get off the Mastodon in his last season. That way you can get a long runway and still retract it so it doesnt crash against the other cars of the train.

Splitsie then said he would pull of a landing and rub it in Tex's face. The landing certainly happened and was impressively executed. Unfortunately the opportunity for a flashback edit and the aforementioned face-rubbing was missed. :P I'm watching this series for the first time. Parking idea: Piston on a rotor (horizontal) running along either side of the runway. Place an armature with a mag-plate on the end of the piston. The piston rotates 90 degrees to lay the armature and mag-plate flat on the runway. Drive the aircraft onto the mag-plate, lock. Reverse the process and extend the piston to store the aircraft on either side of the covering/hanger. Should look ridiculous enough for a stream.

I like to use build and repair along with a projector on my fighting ships instead of a shield mod. Don't weaponize it, but use it in place of a shield. The extra weight of the parts you need makes flying harder and you stand a real chance of getting destroyed faster than it can repair you. The shield mods are fun for a bit but remove most of the challenge even with reavers, corruption and orks.

@Cyberguy42

I think you're right. When compiled the sub-grid wheel control script added the plane's cockpit to its internal list and retained that after the plane detached from the grid. If no other control seat/cockpit was occupied, the plane's would have been classified as the one to listen to commands from. That also explains why copying and pasting the plane fixed things, since it deleted the block that the script had the reference to.

The issue with Starlink or any satellite internet, communication, data, etc, is physics. No matter how fast it is, your ping will still be prohibitively high for gaming due to the distances involved. The speed of communication is limited by the media used to transmit the data, where even if light is used, it still only travels at the speed of light. When compared with ground based communication, the distances involved going up to orbit and back means that the Ping will always be too high for practical gaming.
@Splitsie

Not exactly true. Yes orbital is further distance than an ideal ground based solution, the thing is, no ground based solution is ideal so the low orbit used by starlink can be superior to ground based links
@danielhomant2832

@@Splitsie Orbital methods will almost always have greater ping than ground based, ideal or not, due to the vastly increased distances. Starlink kind of cheats this by being extremely low orbit. At their altitude, yes, they can have competitive levels of ping. This also renders them very short lived due to their rapidly decaying orbits. My mistake on them, I was under the impression they were much higher than they were. That explains a lot about their operation, and their negative impact. Ultimately, I would not support Starlink style, low orbit constellation satellites due to their massive disruption of ground based observatories and simply being able to enjoy a clear night sky. I've seen them in person, so to speak, as they went across the night sky while I was driving across Iowa to Minnesota. It was surprisingly noticeable and very easily seen. While I appreciate their ability to bring internet to normally unavailable populations are areas, I cannot abide their disruption of the sciences.

I think that helicopters in SE encounter similar problem as those in real life. Forward flying helicopter has tips of its blades moving forward in very different speeds. On one side the speed is [helicopter forward speed] + [rotation speed] the opposite side [helicopter forward speed] - [rotation speed]. This means the lifting force on sides of the chopper is different. It also limits maximum speed of any helicopter (cavitations will destroy the blade[citation needed]). Say you build plane in SE which needs 40 m/s to takeoff and then use the same wings as rotor blades instead. But rotor blade parts move in different speeds - those near the rotation center slowly, tips faster. To get your ship to lift itself, the tips of the rotors need to move roughly double the original speed - 80 m/s. So when moving forward just 20 m/s with your helicopter, you are Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Clang Keen wgah'nagl fhtagn. Also, I might be completely wrong and Clang just does whatever he wants.

In the few times I've managed any lift with a helicopter design I'm not even sure that I'm getting lift from the blades as opposed to overwhelming the physics calculations and floating :P But yeah, it's those complexities you mention that are undoubtedly contributing to the physics system simply not being able to cope
