Wrx grinding noise when decelerating?

Have had this noise for a while but it is getting worse now. It happens when decelerating in gear with out any brakes. As soon as the clutch is in or in netural or accelerating the noise is gone... any ideas?

Idk if this helps for anyone, but I have been having a very similar noise after engine swapping. Turns out when I pulled the engine off the trans to swap, my shifter 'stay' linkage popped itself out of the rear bushing/shifter stop, causing the bottom of the shift link to grind on the driveline. So maybe some people's shift stop bushing is going bad, but idk. Hope it helps someone.

@@Acragian I found out for me it was the mount across the bottom of them engine was bent and was hitting the exhaust

I have the same issue and "fixed" it one time before. More than likely, it's the transfer bearings in the transmission going bad. I say "fixed" because I replaced one bearing that was definitely bad and the noise went away. Then it came back and I'm in the process of getting all 4 of the bearings to replaced all of them all at once. Hope it helps

@James Bushnell Thanks for your reply. Are you referring to the center differential, the tail end of the transmission where the rear drive shaft comes out of the trans?

@user-uy2po1mv9r the tail end where the out put shaft lives. There should be 4 bearings there so the chances that 1 has gone are pretty good. Not that bad tk do yourself but get a new paper gasket ordered with the bearings. And possibly a new shifter linkage

Mines the same. Started grinding in 2nd while decelerating. Switched to lightened fly wheel now grinds in all gears around 2k rpm. Its a good excuse to do a 6 speed swap.

People, please verify your heat shield mounted on the exost pipe under the engine. It's very close an has from factory some steel sponge bumper. This bumpers loosen up in time and give that metalic rattle..... I'm thik about CVT almost a.year and it turn out to be a piece of metal on the exost pipe. So sad...but now I'm happy and try to help Subaru community

For me this was the dust shield under the clutch, I bent it out of the way and I no longer have the noise.

I was thinking loose heat shield maybe, but I haven't gotten under the car yet to look, but it's definitely the same sound as in a video. Do you have stock clutch or aftermarket?

Just did an exedy stage 1 organic clutch kit in my 2017 wrx and I’ve never experienced this noise in 110k miles and first test drive after the replace I noticed this exact grinding noise and it broke my heart. I thought I forsure ruined the transmission

07 lib wagon with 2.5i here. Got this exact noise after doing a clutch and having the flywheel machined. Noise got quiter after having a wheel balance/alignement done so it may be the case that vibration in the drive train is impacting of the clutch/flywheel.

I’ve had this exact issue upon decel between 2-3Krpms with light flywheel and stage 2 clutch. I’ve replaced trans and diff to match, front axles and matching tires all around. Now doesn’t do it as often or loud but noise is still there. At this point, the noise has to be coming from the clutch kit or the center diff bearings (3). If anyone could follow up w some results from my conclusions it would be highly appreciated 🙏🏼

Center diff bearings? Wouldn't you have eliminated that cause with the transmission swap you did?

Hey everyone. Here's something interesting - I have a bone stock 2007 Subaru Liberty wagon with dual range 5 manual gearbox... and it makes EXACTLY the same noise. But it does it during acceleration and deceleration (under any load). My only consolation is that it has made the same noise for the last four years and never got worse. I did however get a clutch kit put in recently and that changed the volume of it at certain RPM's but the tone is exactly the same.

Just now showing up in my recommendations, and I had the EXACT same noise on my 21 WRX, more noticeable when warm. Ever since I switched trans fluid to Amsoil Severe Gear 80w-90 it’s hardly noticeable anymore. I suspect Subaru says to use 75w-80 for emissions, because it shifts easier and has better fuel economy when the trans is cold. But, when the transmission warms up, so does the fluid. When oil heats up it gets thinner. A good 90 weight oil should solve this. Mine hasn’t completely gone away, but it’s very very faint, so much that I couldn’t capture it on video anymore. To anyone reading this, CHANGE YOUR TRANSMISSION FLUID. These trannys are literally blenders

@@growingup4487 Not really…the owners manual says 75w-90 can be used in lieu of Subaru Extra MT as long as it’s GL-5 rated. A heavier oil generally will protect better but doesn’t dissipate heat as well…the WRX transmission doesn’t really get super hot, it’s just gears in an oil bath. So a slightly thicker oil is 100% fine.

I put I an stage 2 competition clutch and lightweight flywheel and it was quiet for a bit but now it makes that noise on deceleration from 3.5-2k rpm

I have the same echoe, i have a act clutch and flywheel but hard to know what to start looking at, so many different ways of fixing the exact same noise that everyone has. it’s ridiculous here subaru and all other garage keep on blaming that on my aftermarket mounts but it started after i had my mount on 🤔

FIXED one of my tires was on the rim backwords, also now that im on winters its gone, but when one tire get low on air that sound comes back till i refill it to 30 psi. so it has to do with the tires

For everyone begging asking what is wrong please follow this diagnosis chart Does noise persist while the clutch is pressed in (neutral) YES Wheelbearing, cv joint/shaft, clutch pedal lever and related systems are all common areas for grinding sounds, after that check brake calipers are mounted properly, a caliper slapping inside of a rim can feel like grinding If the sound stops while clutch pressed in you will be looking at everything behind the unijoint aswell as gearbox and transfer mounts For me i simply didn't have any gear oil after driving 2000km while moving and towwing a caravan and i rebuilt everything and filled it before moving, will be rebuilding again as after filling an draining it after moving there was abit of metal dust, if you dont plan to flush metal specks out invest in a magnetic drain plug.

Never fixed it but I have since learned that it's quite common when using lightened flywheels. You can stop the noise by adding more weight to your flywheel apparently HOWEVER the noise is nothing bad and will not cause any damage to your motor or drivetrain. It's just the nature of the beast.

Thanks for the reply. I noticed it after putting in an act clutch/flywheel. Now that I'm solid ish mounts is much louder and wasn't sure if it was the new "normal" or something actually wrong.
