Everybody on here is missing the point. Banksy did this to prove a point that without the art world hyping up an artist and rich people bidding up the price, people don't know how to recognize art, or think for themselves at all for that matter. Without the bullshit "recognition" that the media and the art world provides in general, people are not able to distinguish good art from bad art. Banksy knew that this would happen, and that was the whole point of this exhibit. This whole facade selling art was an artwork in itself because is completely illuminates that most people don't think for themselves anymore, they value things almost exclusively based on the respect that other people give them; not on their own opinions.

For those who are interested on what happened next a news article here in NZ stated the NZ woman went on gut instinct believing they were genuine Banksy works after asking the vendor and being told 'yup', and a few other clues. She also claims to have talked the man from Chicago into buying as well (he must have gone to get cash out like she did - hence the time lag). She stated she was flying back to NZ that day after packing up their home in New York following her husband who'd left on an earlier flight and she only had enough American cash left to buy two canvases. Although she loved them, she finally sold them a year or so back because she couldn't get insurance to cover them without extra security measures.

This is an example of the absurdity of the art market. They are cheap things, but if you put them in an art gallery, they become magically very expensive art, even if it is the same object, move it from place, magically change the perseption and the vaor we give to simple objects. If it is in a gallery it becomes sublime. People should have their own criteria to assess whether something is art, regardless of whether it is in a museum or on the street, in museums and galleries there is a mafia dedicated to fraud..

To be fair, I genuinely like Banksy paintings, not for the name, but the style and the messages behind them. I almost bought a print of his once, but I couldn’t really afford it at the time. I also recognise several of the paintings there as famous Banksys. However, in spite of all of this, I probably would have walked by that stall without even looking at them. Why? When you live in a city, life is so fast-paced that you tend not to notice these things - you’re so focused on your phone, and where you’re going, and a million other things, that the rest of the world kind of just goes by in a flash without you noticing it. It’s not just me - this is how most people are who live in big cities. That’s just city life. Notice how all the people who bought paintings were tourists - they had time to spare, and were there to explore and look at the paintings. I bet most of the people walking by - the actual New Yorkers - didn’t stop to look or notice any of the paintings, not just the Banksys. They probably don’t even remember passing by the stall. When you live in a big city, it just becomes so normal to see these kind of stalls all the time, that you start to not even notice them any more - unless you’re there to deliberately look at the paintings. I don’t think people walked past because they didn’t like the art - they probably didn’t even notice it, because they were so focused on all the things going on in their own lives. That’s just how big city (I’m talking about metropolises, not small cities) life is - not just NYC, but all around the world. Visitors from the country often refer to city life as cold and uncaring for that reason, but it’s not - it’s just a different, faster-paced way of living.

Drew Earthling I didn’t say “sixty dollars indicates wealth” I obviously said if you have $60 to spend on a random piece of street art from a person you don’t know then you’re obviously already wealthy. People living paycheck to paycheck or having a manageable income would never throw away $60 for something to hang on a wall.

Drew Earthling so maybe you just read thoroughly before you reply so you can make out what people are actually saying and not what you solely perceive.

The lady who bought the 2 for her children watched this video, then stormed into her children's bedrooms and ripped them from the wall, the children tried to grab them off her screaming: "Mommy, what are you doing"? "I am selling these paintings" Children, gripping the canvases with all their might, tears streaming down their cheeks... "No Mommy I love my painting" "SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET GO YOU LITTLE SHITS!!!"

When will Banksy visits Tanauan City, Batangas, Phils? :)
@ebenclukey72936 жыл бұрын
You could value them at Twenty million each. An object is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

The only reason I would want one is to sell it. I dont really see the desire to hang up art that I don't find appealing. I would be happy with a piece by Pablo around the 1931-38. His work has soul that I can enjoy. Price has nothing to do with it. I believe that was Banksy's point is to let the people enjoy the art at an affordable price. It is about the art!

Fun experiment, but honestly I wouldn’t get those for 60 unless it was to sell them for more
