When Sam Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015, the generative AI industry was niche. Altman helped create the tech company with the mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity, but he has seen massive commercial success with the viral Chat-GPT and splashy new products like Sora and GPT-4o.
WSJ looks at how he turned the company from a wonky research lab to a $86 billion unicorn, while walking the thin line between commercial success and utopian ideals.

Stanford incubators have the goal specifically in mind... create something that gets bought. And even Ray Kurzweil - I always laugh at how people prop this clown up as some sort of guru - pushed back AGI to 2032. Might as well as be 5032 given the current technology base.

Well, I didn't get how exactly Sam Altman has built his OpenAI Lab into a Behemoth. What was his first step and what was the role of big tech?
@chihchang1139
@chihchang1139 8 күн бұрын
his first step is to convince Microsoft that nobody is going to care that they are just stealing copyrighted data on the internet. The entire problem of AI for the last decade and a half is just the lack of open source/copyright-free data available. There is literally no innovation here, it's why any idiot can create an AI product now using decade old algorithms on Google's tensorflow and python's deep learning libraries that have existed for over a decade now.

Get your facts straight, employees backed him coming back almost unanimously and only part of the board made that decision including Helen Toner who is kind of an AI doomer, so obviously she is not that bullish on AI getting put out to the public. Somehow people tend to forget this and now kind of side with Toner. There will always be a stuggle between people who want to build AGI and people who are mostly concerned about safety and want to keep it locked up. Although they are no longer a non-profit, their agreements with companies like Microsoft are capital-capped. Man doing stuff for humanity seems highly immoral these days.. Making billions on an AI business whose competing with other AI companies to squeeze out the maximum profit out of AI. 1:40 "I think we should not focus on how I lied, deceived and and profited from people's naivety and focus on what we agree, we must get that technology right." That's the spirit!

On one hand AI will make us smarter by making us learn new things, on the other, it'll make us dumber as it simplifies our workload by doing our grammar, homework, code, etc. Also, it'll harvest our data to train itself and possibly spy on you as it gets integrated into your OS. Waiting for the day a 0-day is found where it can use AI to modify your files etc.

Yes, we know the limitations of AI that exist today. But this has kicked off a race to improve AI in everyway, that one day will be able to subdue most of the pressing limitations that we have today. So is it really not a revolution?
