Sifu Peterson is one of the few masters and students of not only Wing Chun but also practicality in the system that matters so much when in a combat scenario that I feel is so incredibly lacking in a lot of Wing Chun teachers. Not to name any names, I hope that all come to the path of what works and discarding what doesn't but I see a lot of people get caught up in haze of debating "authentic Wing Chun" rather than learning the system for yourself in practical combat. Great video as always.

Hi Sifu Peterson, James here from Portland, Oregon. I am very curious about your point here regarding the 5 ways of attacking in chi-sau; your seminar on the Chum-Kiu form, as I recall, demonstrates a couple of other ways also to attack in chi sau, e.g. under-laap (from below) etc. To what degree are these 5 attack methods singular or dominant from/of many others? Any further details would be appreciated. Thank you for producing these original, and highly necessary (of vast efficacy) videos.

The 5 ways of attack mentioned represent the most logical, direct & efficient ways to deliver an attack whilst still maintaining control of the opponent & his/her position. Of these, the ‘Taan Sau’, ‘Paak Sau’ & ‘Laap Sau’ methods are probably the most preferred & effective, bearing a close relationship to actual combat whilst still adhering to the restrictions of the ‘Chi Sau’ drill. The ‘Cham Kiu Fook Sau’ (we do not use the term “under-Laap”) & ‘Gaan Sau’ variations are less used, but collectively offer the most typical conditions whereby entry can be achieved. Any other variations (I am fully aware that there are many variations to be found within other lineages, as well as our own) simply indicate the possibility of adaptations that actual situations may dictate. Wong Sifu would occasionally show other subtle variations, but always advised that too many variations just create confusion & complication, and tend to move us away from reality into a world of “if you do this, I’ll do that” which will inevitably cause more problems than solutions.

Just noticed that you uploaded a video for the first time in many years! Whilst I haven't trained WSLVT (I trained other lineages), I've always wanted to after being exposed to your philosophy and training methodology. You seemed to drop off the radar for a long time after moving to Malaysia, but I'm happy to see that you're still doing well! I'm curious, would you happen to know of anyone teaching or training in the WSL lineage in Japan?

Actually, we just stopped posting new material to our KZbin account for a time, but we’ve been actively posting material to Facebook, Instagram and other media constantly over the past several years - if you do a Google search I’m sure you’ll discover more; start by visiting our website at: www.wslwingchun.my

I have a student teaching WSLVT in Osaka, Japan. His name is Sifu Blair Johnston, and you can find him at the ‘Powerarts’ academy there.
