There's no such thing as a 'fast lane' in Washington. The far left lane is only for passing, and the state patrol says drivers need to be educated about that law.

I do auxiliary police work as well and have yet to see any evidence of quotas. It's autistic officers with no sense of grey or descretion that go out and ticket people for going 0.1 km/h over the posted speed limit. It sounds ridiculous but it's the truth. You will have the odd "blitz" detail where the department will use a period to nail everyone and everything in site. Other than that, it's simply revenue and no officer is being ordered to meet quotas. This is a descretion based job. The police services are just hiring the wrong type of person.

In my experience there are two types of drivers who plug up the left lane. One type feels that since they are doing the limit, no one should be trying to pass them. Actually, the whole point is even if you are going 200 mph and the fastest thing on the road, you are supposed to be in the right hand lane unless you are actively engaged in passing another vehicle. Once past, you get back in the right lane again. Doesn't matter if there is another vehicle a few hundred yards ahead and you can clearly see you will overtake them, you still need to move back right until you are in position to pass again.

I keep seeing comments about driver's license training but there is no such thing as training for a driver's license you're given a pamphlet and then your parents train you very improperly based on their paranoia and fear of what you might do in a car the driver's license is just something you go apply for it doesn't require any training by force of law so people don't look at the manual. The driving test is only like 20 multiple-choice questions and you're allowed to get three or four wrong on top of that and for many many years this beginning drivers pamphlet has had the same typos and mistakes in it. PeRX in a driving class I was participating in someone brought a book in that explained that in a survey 80% of people found the most stressful thing in life was changing lanes. Think about it 80% of the people around you are scared to change lanes. That guy next to you and the guy in front of you and the guy behind you are risking your life because they're afraid to drive appropriately. Afraid! Therefore they make up excuses did not change lanes they make excuses to claim that it's safer because they're scared. They're endangering your life because they're afraid to pay attention to the traffic around them and take responsibility to keep up with any of it. That means they're mentally trying to tune out and not pay attention while they drive next to you and your family. Read the comments and you will see people argumentative about their "right" to be this way. That reason alone is why you see me commenting on KZbin videos so ridiculously often because 80% of the people around me are endangering my life with the ignorance that they adamantly support.

It's not a law to HAVE to do the speed LIMIT. It's a LIMIT, not the starting speed! That said, a driver should not impede traffic on purpose by going way slow, either. However, you are saying that if I am not in YOUR hurry and choose to enjoy the drive and countryside by maybe doing 5 or 10 under, then not only do you wish death, but also want to pass a law that does not allow me to pass someone in the PASSING LANE that may be going even slower. Campers in the middle lane should be given the ticket. If a truck has to take the left lane, the camper in the middle lane should get the ticket.(whatever the fine would have been for the truck). I’ve had drivers get on from a ramp, on a 65 mph interstate, doing about 45 mph, and come right to the middle lane! All trucks on the highways are working. Most 4 wheelers are not. We also have problems now with the new truckers hogging the middle lane.

We are taught to stay right. I went through drivers Ed in high school, 1983, so this is nothing new. Some just don’t care. They feel entitled or are just completely oblivious. I was in the US Army in Germany in 1986 & 1987 and we had to obviously follow German speed limits but also the American 55mph maximum when posted Germans speeds were higher. The Polizei would not pull you over but the Military MP’s would monitor the German Autobahn also. I would just cringe when I was in the vehicle with some dumb ass Sergeant that would be slowly passing someone in the left lane making sure not to go over 55mph. Often had cars nose dive right up on our bumper blasting the horn and frantically flickering the high beams.

Well when you have a truck speed limit at 65 and a car limit at 80 you've created a situation where every car will be using the passing lane on a constant basis. So now you have cars driven by decent people who are doing 80 (cause you know, its the speed limit) and asshats who think the passing lane is a free for all, so they do 95 and expect the decent law abiding driver to immediately get over so they can continue to do whatever the hell they want. Guess what: if Im trying to pass a semi truck doing his speed limit while I am doing my speed limit, and you run up on me at breakneck speed, you can kiss my ass and wait until Ive legally finished my passing maneuver, and if you want to ram me for it or endanger my or my familys life for it, there will be bullets flying if there is a defense of life situation that you've created. Every five years or so the WSP launches a campaign like this to "educate" passing lane violators which only lasts a week or two. They need to stay on it. Make it your primary infraction. If the WSP has quotas (they won't admit they do, but they do), fill it with left lane violation infractions. It doesn't improve traffic unless they keep pressing the issue to bad drivers.

I'm sure that the concept of "the left lane being a passing lane applies in all states". It's basic traffic common sense. I'm tired of seeing that everyday. People being so stupid and selfish that as soon as they get on the road they move all the way over and stay in the left lane. I'm also tired of seeing "educating" instead of ticketing and mass exposure in the media abbout how that is an illegal practice. That would not only educate but get the message out to the masses with much better results. Stop cuddling selfish people!

How exactly does this work? If left lane is only for passing and right lane is only for exiting is every 3 lane road actually only a 1 lane road? Is every 2 lane road also only a 1 lane road? Is a 3 lane highway supposed to only have a single lane of traffic and the left and right lane completely clear at all times unless your passing a car or exiting?

I wish more cops did this, I've read in some states that its a misdemeanor which I do not agree with; a simple warning or small citation is enough, since most drivers who violate this law are usually ignorant

I-70 in Colorado has a minimum speed for the left lane. As long as you are going 55 when you pass someone you are okay.
