A new Florida law is set to ban homeless people from sleeping in public spaces. Some say it will keep the streets safe, others say it will simply hide the problem from public view. So in tonight’s 7Investigates, Karen Hensel asked those who will be affected by the changes.

One of the biggest issues with 'camping' out in public is the amount of mess/trash created by a lot of the homeless people that group together. It wouldn't be as bad if they picked up after themselves.

Its an easy problem to solve but most homeless people are Lazy, Nasty and are Drug Addicts. If the states want to get them work , start a program to train them to be security guards since you dont need a brain for that or even need to work hard. But, here is the catch, even if the state decided to do that, I bet 90 percent of them would refuse because their biggest challenge is getting fed and there are places that feed them daily and sleeping and they dont care about where they sleep. If they werent so nasty and disgusting I bet these things wouldnt have been a problem but when these disgusting people do their drugs and leave their filth everywhere and sleep and crap in the public view instead of trying to at least be somewhat clean, this is bound to happen. Now with thats said, At least in jail they will get fed, have a working toilet, a roof , AC all day, TV, and not have to work. Compared to their situation, that would be a major upgrade but here is the problem , they will have less access to drugs and alcohol. I bet if jails started serving alcohol, and drugs they wouldnt mind jail

Yes there is, they rather build buildings to accommodate people migrating from other states. 100 acres of land is less than 500k, they can turn it into a factory for organic foods and put them to work. Less than 10 million dollars can employ the homeless and create a business with them to make a livable wage

This is about drug addiction in most cases and is getting worse everyday. They steal, leave messes everywhere for others to see and then move and do the same thing another place. Get real because the cities on the west coast spend hundred of millions of dollars to make the problem worse and worse. So the bleeding hearts are what have caused this over the last 20 years to get worse.

How is DeSantis bad for this ? It says he is putting the burden on counties to set aside areas for the homeless that must have bathrooms, and mental health care. That is great. Of course, the areas may be drug and alcohol free, which is a good thing. So how is this bad ? Why should homeless people be allowed to sleep on public sidewalks ?
@ludovician
@ludovician 3 ай бұрын
There's no additional funding for the counties and if the counties fail to provide these services they can be sued. Eventually you'll just start seeing the counties fail and then DeSantis can say he tried everything without actually doing anything.
@vectortiedye
@vectortiedye 3 ай бұрын
@@ludovician the counties should not fail, and if they do then they should elect more competent leaders. if counties and states cannot figure out how to stop the rich from getting richer while the middle class fails, then it should be visible and everyone should have to see. alcohol and tobacco companies are thriving so are bars and restaurants, stores, rehabs, hospitals and those who earn from them. At the expense of the addicts and alcoholics, who ARE the homeless. There is no reason a person should be homeless unless they are somehow impaired. If DeSantis did not do this then what would happen? The counties should not get federal funding. The counties can figure out how to get these people employed and help. Stop giving them free food and free health care. Make them earn the money, and if they are doing drugs and nicotine and alcohol where are they getting the money ? Debilitation from drugs and alcohol and NICOTINE are just the main problem that debilitates these people into being victims of parasites (the establishments and the churches). All these establishments saying they are aiding the homeless are just making money and getting tax writeoffs.

The city of Miami past and present mayors have all done the same thing- completely ignore the homeless situation with dozens if not hundreds of people sleeping on the street and what I call the war zone just outside of wynwood It's almost like there's an unwritten rule as long as they stay in Little area and don't venture into the areas that are frequented by tourists specifically wynwood and Bayside, then the cops leave them alone. I have been watching this for years it's almost as if the cops and other City officials in the city of Miami are completely blind to dozens and dozens of homeless people sleeping on the streets in the city of Miami every single night. As a former homeless person , the main reason for homelessness is a lot of people are sociopaths. I myself have that issue, you either learn to survive within society or die on the outside, period. You cannot continue down this path of accepting people who just don't want to work a boring day job, they want to live free, but there's a price to every choice. We can't take care of grown people who insist on breaking the law, we just can't.

Just think of the millions of dollars Ron DeSantis used to fly immigrants from Texas to Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. that could have gone towards helping the homeless problem in his state. Also DeSantis and state administrators rejected at least $11 billion in federal funds over the past two years. Millions of low-income Floridians could have benefited from that money. He also forfeited about $5 billion in food benefits for families that struggle to make ends meet. The $11 billion is money Floridians send to Washington when they pat their income taxes. And if Florida does not claim this money it often goes to other states. By not accepting the money he hurts Floridians.

Low Income Floridians wouldn't be able to find housing if the influx of migrants from out west ended up in Florida. Homelessness is something that will never go away. Hell, I could end up that way. Allowing them to sleep/camp on the streets is not a solution. It is just going to make Florida another $hit hole like San Francisco, Portland, Los Angeles. Thank you DeSantis. You're not perfect and do somethings not always correct but mostly are pretty damn good.

Somebody needs to teach Shevrin Jones that a large majority of homeless people get used to the lifestyle and would rather not have to return back to living under the government's rules. You can't force people to take help when they don't want it. Jones just hates the bill because it's likely a Republican bill.

Having a progressive approach and proper management of the new law is crucial. No one likes unknown change and everyone has opinions and concerns be it negative or positive. It’s important we help the homeless not punish them but leaving them slowly erode the environment of our city’s isn’t the answer.

Let's get this going in Cali. The homeless are usually homeless like this for being bad. I've known lazy people at work that still are responsible enough to not be homeless. On average, these people don't have good excuses.

That's a stupid law that I would break repeatedly. As I'm an epileptic I am sometimes unwell, resulting in me having to rest/sleep wherever I am. This is because when I have issues my vision is affected and I cannot even cross a street safely.
