In this video I decided to cut to the chase and talk about the concepts behind Energy Fighting. I discuss the advantages it gives you over "turnfighting" (historically known as Angle Fighting), explain the importance of using Indicated Air Speed, then show the effects a few simple maneuvers have on the speed of your plane.
This is very much an introduction. In the next video I'll look at climbing, then demonstrate a series of energy related maneuvers.
If you'd like to support me in my creative endeavors, you can do so at / long5hot

I know this video is 6 years old, but thank you so much for posting these types of videos. I've also grown attached to air to air battles (sometimes ground to air), as I find it extremely fun. These videos let me know more about the planes I'm flying and how to utilize them. After watching your videos, I've noticed that I've been hitting more hits and eliminating more targets. That's all I wanted to say, Thanks!

I played War Thunder back in 2013 and gave up after not being able to get the hang of it. I stumbled across a video of the game and instantly wanted to play it again. Only thing was. I was terrible at the game, 1 kill maybe every other game. I was a victim of turn and burn. then I found your videos, and after watching this a few nights ago and putting your information to use I've gotten 7-10 kills a match now. So all in all, thanks for the great explanations and all the help. You've actually made the game enjoyable for me now :)

I'm actually NOT someone knew to ACM. I've been flying flight sims since X-Wing and Chuck Yeager's on floppies. I never did get wings of gold, but I have friends that have. They've always tried to help me out with my living piloting. For the most part, I thoroughly have always enjoyed attack type aircraft - doesn't matter if it's a Y-Wing or a PBJ-1H. So I've lucked out in that way, and I've become quite adept at surviving and even getting my bombs where they need to go. For Warthunder however, I've been bit by the fighter bug again. And in my 20+ years of flightsim experience... your videos have been the easiest to follow and understand. Even for me, with YEARS of experience in all manner of flight sims. I think I may finally understand how to enjoy my great boom & zoom fighters of WW2. thanks!

This video series is pure gold. I have watched it so many times i dont think i can count any more. I find myself getting more reversals, reading energy states, recognizing manuevers and effectively countering them without really thinking about it too much. I have shared this series with all my warthunder mates and we are all better pilots for it. Cheers

Hello, long5hot :) I like your beginner guide videos, they ease me into the airplane combat of War Thunder (I always preferred tanks though, but they have some serious balance and functionality problems right now :( ) and encourage me to learn more of fighter gameplay as bomber/attacker gameplay (which I do generally like) is really lackluster in War Thunder. Today, I have returned to flying a little bit. Taking Buffalo for US, and watching your videos, I was finally able to get some kills without having all aircraft destroyed. I believe it's right time to try to leave/minimize angle fighting and try to concentrate more on energy fighting. Great videos, very solid explanations and showcases. Good work :)

I needed time to adjust to the energy system. I'm used to Battlefield 3's dogfighting where all turning loses the same amount of energy and gravity has no effect on speed, so the most complex thing you could do to keep up with an enemy jet was reducing your speed when entering a turn to make it tighter and then gunning the afterburner to regain lost speed.

Excellent video longshot, Informative and entertaining. Would be highly beneficial to Gaijin if they use it on the game as first tutorial. A lot of people quit the game early because of frustration and the reason, as you stated, is lack of info and the fact that biplanes tend to leave a mark on how one approach later monoplanes.

It might be knitpicking, and it's probably been pointed out before... but altitude is an energy-state of itself (and you almost had it right) in physics you learn that altitude is potential energy, while speed (combined with the weight) is kintetic energy. So the concept of energyfighting is basically converting potential energy into kinetic energy and back to potential energy. Therefore using the inertia (which is higher the heavier your plane is) of your plane for as long as possible. Otherwise nice and very helpful video like always

Good info, about the interface and the IAS. The IAS is not the speed of the air past the wings, rather the pressure seen by an instrument such as a pitot pipe on the plane. This pressure/IAS gives a good indication of whether or not the plane will stall.

I hate you Long5hot i'm always staying away from tutorials guides ect in games sine i feel like it's eazy mode and i prefer to learn thing myself so it give me more fun to do so, or invite myself maybe old know tactic. But sine lack of aviation warfare knowledge and frustration about hiting enemy dozen dozen of times w/o kill and geting killed by few bullets usually i finally decide to train something so i will not waste my brand new Emil (Bf 109 E-1) I search YT for videos about diving with him cause i know it must be proper way for this fighter due to his weakness and i finally came to one which leads me to Long5hot tutorial. Now i can't stop watching it! Slowly piece by piece i'm learning and trying everything and it works. And it gives me fun knowing what will happen next usually. I'm dying more often now from ally crashing on me than enemy fire ;x Channel subbed kepp good work on, thanks!

I can understand you wanting to avoid tutorials & learn for yourself, indeed that's exactly the approach I took too. But all I'm doing in my vids is sharing the benefit of my experience - and even then its limited as I'm just one guy, I make mistakes & I certainly don't know everything. If it helps give you a leg up & improve your flying that's great, but in the end its you controlling the plane & makng the decisions, not me, and I don't doubt that there's a lot more to be discovered than what I've showed in the vids. Anyway, glad you found the vids helpful, and I wish you good hunting :)

Yeah, helpful, glad ot know the difference between IAS and SPD. The other things I have learned from your past vids, I think this is going to be great for beginners. Could you tell me; was that the USMC Corsair? Is there any difference between that and the 1a (I think that is the one that is just before that).

That was the 1a. I think the USMC one doesn't have a tailhook, and the 1D has rockets. Other than that they all have identical flight models.

I had a much easier start, having played Flight Simulators for a couple of years, flying RC planes, and being an aviation fan (why I got WT in the 1st place :D), so I knew quite a bit about the aircraft, weapons, and tactics. The hardest bit for me was getting the controls right. FSX uses Mouse Up for Pitch Down, and so on. That made using Mouse Aim mode in WT a bit tricky. I can still remember trying to shoot down the target planes in the 1st basic tutorial...I think it took me around 10 attempts....!

Long5hot I agree that turn fighting can be very boring and ineffective in non-turn fighting planes but turning in dedicated turn fighters is very rewarding and chalenging. Especially in Japanese planes turn fighting is a difficult art form that when mastered can wreak havoc. Turn fighting is effective and complex when done correctly. Energy fighting is not the only way to get kills.
@long5hot

If you watch my other videos you'll see I've fought in many dogfights, but it remains true that every plane is an energy fighter, and even in a turning battle energy tactics can be used to good effect.

Any thoughts on using crew skill points with your playing style (Fighters in arcade battles)?
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 жыл бұрын
Firstly, you want your crews experted (through the crew/Qualification tab) which means spreading experience points around evenly to get you above the 100 or 200 point thresholds. After that work on the Vitality which will lessen the number of pilot kills and G-Force/Stamina which work together to speed recovery from blackouts & improve the smoothness of the instructor (if you're using Mouse Aim).

Great video. Any interest in giving an intro/beginner video to Realistic mode in War Thunder? It always throws me when I switch from Arcade to Realistic. Example is playing Arcade mode for a few matches, then switching over to Realistic because the reward bonus is worth trying and I can't perform maneuvers like I used to and I have to remember to maneuver gently and plan them better, but when I do it's too late and I'm in trouble. In arcade, I like to think I'm an average pilot but Realistic I struggle to get kills and have to go real high and be VERY picky about my targets and that isn't much fun and it becomes frustrating.

Sorry I was not completely clear with my question. I use the C button holding it down and then as I watch the enemy behind me and come around above him/behind him when I let go of the C button sometimes my view is a different direction. Instead of looking at my target the plane seems to be elsewhere so I loose track of my target. Especially when I am climbing. I use the rudder and see the plane turning around while still watching ym target, then when it looks like i am pointed at him and let go of C most times I am not. It has only worked out a few times and i keep practicing it. Should i just keep holding the C until I get the kill or at least til I see it is shooting the direction i want? How do you do it so it doesn't change my view because it throws me off when I am going to shoot them. Hope that makes sense.
@long5hot
@long5hot 7 жыл бұрын
If I'm using rudder and/or elevator, I look around without using C - you don't need it. Then when I release the rudder/elevator keys, the plane starts flying to where the cursor is rather than the cursor snapping back to the plane's heading as it does with C.

novocas7rian With the amount of work and theory you put into this vid, I'm going to assume that you are at least a little curious about this sort of stuff, so I'll do my best to explain it. I am a Flight Instructor in training so this is good practice for me. My own brief google search didn't yield any immediate results, so I fell back to what I've been trained. Aircraft speed is read off a pitot tube. Air enters this tube (ram air pressure) and is compared with static pressure inside of the airspeed indicator to get the airspeed. Since air is less dense at high altitude, the aircraft will have to go faster to read the same airspeed since there is less ram air pressure. This is important because the less dense air at altitude also means that there is less air flowing over the wings. The speed of the air flowing over the wings hasn't changed, but the amount of air has, which means that you will have to go faster to get the same amount of lift that you would at sea level. How does this pertain to a dogfight? I'll relate it to the stall speed of an aircraft. The "true airspeed" at which an aircraft stalls will vary based on altitude and air density. The Cessna 172's that I fly in have a stall speed of 48 knots indicated. That speed will remain relatively the same at sea level vs 15,000 (not that you would find a 172 up that high lol). The true airspeed, will be much higher though, just like you demonstrated on your vid. It's that relationship which makes indicated airspeed much more valuable to pilots.

Speaking of energy fighiting. Just before I watched this video I played War Thunder and I took a Zero up to 3000-4000m and did nothing but rope a dope and diving attacks. Worked rather well, got 9 kills and 1 death.(because of stupidity on my part) Also another thing, the Tracer belts for the cannons on the Zeros are amazing, never used anything else.
@long5hot
@long5hot 10 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love doing that in Zeros, or any "turnfighter" for that matter. The Spit Vb is another plane that's brilliant at rope-a-dopes but can also BnZ effectively as well, something the Zero struggles with, plus it can take on bombers.

whats the use of combat flaps in battle?
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 жыл бұрын
Reduces the size of the turning circle, though not the speed at which the plane turns. Using flaps is at the cost of increasing drag which slows the plane down. Use them in order to get a kill if a quick half-turn with flaps will get guns on target whereas without them you may not, and if a speed loss isn't going to put you in danger. With some planes it'll also make the handling a little more stable while firing as well.

Very nice video, I've been playing WT for so long and never knew that about IAS. Will help me a lot in high alt engagements. Do you ever see yourself going into tier 4 once the bullshit-17s and 24s are fixed? I can see you liking the later 109s, p51, ki84 as well because they are right down your alley as far as play style. Many more high alt engagements in tier 4 too so it's a bit more of a challenge. I've tried squading with you when I saw you online, but I figured you were in a duel with aim or something, so if you ever want to fly low tiers hmu ingame is flip240. Cheers
@long5hot
@long5hot 10 жыл бұрын
Hi flip, yes I've seen a chat message from you once or twice, but I've either been incredibly pushed for time (sometimes I can only squeeze a single battle in during a busy workday) or yes, squadded up. I do try to respond though & am sorry I've missed talking with you. My main problem though is only being able to play for very short time snippets rather than being able to sit down & fly for an hour or two. Regarding T4, yes I'd love to try it out but the bomber spam just makes it pointless. Not only that, the map designs which work well for low T3 and below, are becoming too cramped for high T3 given the increased plane speeds & I imagine T4 is just a clusterfrack, let alone what happens with jets. The maps really need the spawns moved further back & the objectives spread out more in the higher tiers. Unfortunately I don't think fixing either the bomber spam or the crowded nature of higher tier Arcade battles is important to Gaijin. Its been 9 months now since 1.37 kicked off the base rushing and little's been done to address it. Also so many of the new maps introduced over the last few patches, especially Dominations, have been designed to cram everyone into a single furball - so the developers seem intent on making that aspect worse rather than better. I remain hopefully that they'll prove me wrong though :)
@flip100
@flip100 10 жыл бұрын
Time is always a pain in the ass and understand haha...I agree with it getting crowded and it's not any better with higher tiers...especially with these new added maps like britain, krymsk and other single airfield maps that cater to the cotton candied brained average player that goes down low turn fights and maybe gets 1 kill and dies right off. I still wonder why I play tier 4 with the bomber spam, even bigger question why hasn't the gunners on b17s been fixed...

the best aircraft for energy fighting in the game, Tier for tier, would be the ki 43 japanese fighter. It climbs better than all tier 0-2 and better than some tier 3 and once you have run out of altitude to B/Z it is one of the best turn fighters in the game plus its acceleration is very good. ive even climbed to the ceiling in it and just dropped the bomb load of it on the enemy run way and was lucky enough to get a kill with it.

Heh, you're preaching to the choir on the Ki-43 mate :) Check the recent "versus" videos that both AIM_120_AMRAAM and I made to showcase its phenomenal abilities as both an energy & dogfighter.

What's the best game mode arcade or the other one ?????
@long5hot
@long5hot 7 жыл бұрын
They all have good points and flaws. Arcade has far more planes in the air, which some people find chaotic and others find an enjoyable challenge. The pacing in RB is much slower with very few targets, which some people find frustrating and unrewarding, but others love it. Its really down to whichever form of gameplay you enjoy the most.

man you're awesome...but pls tell me how you destroy almost every enemy with a few shots???how you do it so fast...i'm in early level with tier 3 plane and i need to make so much hits to destroy a fighter plane below my tier (rank)...sometimes i shot them down quickly but sometimes...p.s. i take my time to aim and fire right where it hits and same thing...just make hits and the enemy keeps flying...make more and more hits and he just keeep on flying :) i am confused...please try to help me with some advise :)

Its not that I'm doing anything special, rather the game has changed since most of my videos were made. Damage models have become tougher, the hitting power of shells & bullets has reduced, and hit detection has gone downhill. The damage model & projectile effectiveness have swung back and forth several times over the years. Patch 1.27, early 2013, planes were made of concrete. Patch 1.39, early 2014, a brief burst of 50 cals would rip wings off at 800m. There have been several patches since then, I don't recall the numbers now, but in one patch nearly every cannon became useless & .50 cals ruled the sky, and in another patch .50s were nerfed to the point of uselessness. Then came Patch 1.59 in 2016 which buffed DMs (especially bombers) and nerfed ammo, and while things have scaled back a little since then its still much harder to shoot down planes than it used to be. And it seems to me that they're allocating fewer server resources to the plane side of the game, as hit detection is miserable now compared to what it used to be. These changes (from 1.59 onwards) are what drove me to take a break from War Thunder.

It doesn't matter how well I do with energy fighting, I still get instantly shot down. I could be in a Maxed out jet going 1000 km/h vs a stalling P-26 and he would still shoot me down. It doesn't matter how good I am at this I still get shot down instantly. Any advise (don't say git gud, because to that I say git gud at comeing up with real insults)

long5hot How about radiator, propeller pitch and aileron control in Arcade? Same deal? Or are these just for Simulator? I, too, ended up flying bombers early on, until I realized that really wasn't why I was playing. I am grateful for all the knowledge I can get on here, fighters are so much more fun now, thanks to great teachers like you... Just don't blame me when I'm on your six!

***** You can control radiator and propeller pitch in RB and SB, but not in AB where they've been disabled.
@TheMetahedron
@TheMetahedron 9 жыл бұрын
long5hot Thanks. Have you ever found them very useful? I had the idea of of binding some functions together, like prop pitch, fuel mix and aileron extension to create high/low altitude keys to keep it simpler, also binding radiator to flaps (open) and throttle up (closed), or something like this. I usually fly AB until I have a sweet plane worthy of RB, do you think it's worth my time figuring this out?

The problem that i have is how some american planes lock up when diving, for example the rudder on the Hellcat dies at 500km/h making it nearly impossbile to hit your target if he decided to turn at the last second. Another thing that frustrates the hell out of me is MG FF cannons on german planes. It feels like they're shooting blanks, most of the time i only score hits with the MGs, while BnZing...
@long5hot
@long5hot 10 жыл бұрын
I agree that's frustrating as hell (unintended) with the Hellcat and also the Wildcat which suffers the same problem. Fortunately energy fighting doesn't only consist of BnZ. MG FFs are good only at very close range, I usually only fire them at 400m or closer. Their slow velocity makes accuracy a real problem further out.

Speedbird Energy fighting started in 1915 with the Fokker Eindekker, every fighter is capable of it, and far from wasting my time with it I've scored a lot of kills that way far more efficiently and safely than trying to turnfight. Not every plane can boom & zoom though.

I'm very late to the party, but I must be pedantic about IAS. I've spend 20 years banging on about this, so commenting on a 6 year-old video is "fashonably late". True airspeed (TAS, or SPD) is the speed of the air over the wings. Indicated airspeed (IAS) is whatever it says on the dial. A correctly calibrated airspeed indicator (CAS) shows the difference between pitot pressure and static pressure, expressed in terms of a speed at sea level. Without getting into advanced physics, look at it this way: Aircraft fly and manoeuver by pushing against the air flow. IAS/CAS tells you how much air flow you've got to push against. Look at 5:34 in your video. Here, you have an SPD of 410 km/h and an IAS of 346 km/h. The air is travelling over the wings at 410 km/h. However, because the air is less dense at 3700 m, there's less air flow to push against. The IAS of 346 km/h tells us that the air flow at 3700 m, 410 km/h is similar to the airflow at 346 km/h at sea level.
@long5hot
@long5hot 3 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting! Thanks for clarifying - it's not pedantic on your part, it's educational :)

I know this is old, but I've been trying to follow your instructions for a couple days now, and I seem to be doing even worse (if thats possible). I know I'm doing something wrong, but for the fucking life of me I can't figure out what it is. I've played multiple games tonight and not gotten a single kill and I'm getting really fucking angry. I want to figure it out but doing as poorly as I've been doing is really disheartening, and I'm just considering giving up on planes altogether. edit: I think i figured it out. I was getting real fed up, so i said "one last game, but this time im going balls to the walls. Whats the worst that will happen? I die just like the other times?" So i said fuckit amd dove into the furball. I didnt do great: i died twice, once to an obviously superiour pilot, and the second time by slamming into a mountain because i wasn't paying attention to my surroundings during evasive maneuvers. I still need to work on remembering not to chase my targets since that bleeds energy, which lead to me being shot down, and definitely need to work on defensive flying, since i havent managed to get a reversal yet. But my attack runs are much better now. I think my problem was that i was being too cautious, and my dives were too long and opened me up to attack. Id also climb too high amd separate myself from my team where id get isolated and picked off. Now i know that i need to just fucking go for it
