This tutorial covers what to do when there's a plane on your six, avoiding interceptors and Boom and Zoom defense, and dodging head-ons. Note: This video is intended for Arcade players - many of the maneuvers shown here may not work as well in Realistic Battles and would be disastrous if attempted in SB mode.
If you'd like to support me in my creative endeavors, you can do so at / long5hot
The movie clip at beginning & end is from a film called "The German", which can be seen here - player.vimeo.com/video/3120290...

I've watched all your vids and studied them hard, practiced in training mode and now, after a few days of solid training and refining i usually always come first on my team, 3 being the lowest position. I personally use Hurricanes (not the best, but tough) and it is irrelevant what a planes turning speed is, if you know what you are doing you can be a god among men in the sky with anything. I now implement the same strategies in RB with decent success. Thank you for your tutorials, they really opened my eyes.

How have you been able to get away from Boom and Zoom attacks with heavier fighters i.e. P47 or P38 lightning? I have been having some real difficulty avoiding Bf 109's when they dive on me and even when I do escape, I'll flip over expecting them to overshoot only to realize they've turned into me as well.
@dbg5744
@dbg5744 3 жыл бұрын
@@vosswatter always difficult against BF 109s. They are BnZ gods. Though you can either climb and try to match their altitude negating, for the most part, their ability to BnZ or get close to the ground. That might scare off a few because many won't risk diving if you hug the terrain. But that brings up its only problems. Dog fighters mainly. Though a trick to combat BnZ is to turn into their path. Never turn away. Because they will be on you once again. Turning into their path causes them to over shoot and they will have to climb. Which you can use to better position your self or tuck in behind them. Split S is also a decent tactic to use. Advised, even. But it has been a long while since I played War thunder. Just things off of the top of my head..

Well, on reflection there's things I didn't show - such as how to avoid someone while keeping your energy high in order to gain a reversal not by forcing an overshoot but by gaining an energy advantage. All those sharp breaks etc have their cost in terms of speed loss. I guess they're good enough though for 90% of your typical Arcade encounters.

You do a fantastic job with teaching new players - like me - about the strategies we should use to be more successful, so I wanted to say thanks to you for all the effort you put in making these videos :) Although I'm sad because you are taking a break from the game, since you said that you do not enjoy the game as much as you did in the past because of the new changes patch 1.45 has offered I think it is a step in the right direction - even though I'm not here to judge you :) We should play games to enjoy them and stop playing if that enjoyment is no longer present. PS: That Bf-109 skin with the red nose tip and black-gray painting (I believe it was a E-3 skin) looks nice. I searched the web a little and could not find it, can you or someone give the link to the file on the web if possible?
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 жыл бұрын
Hey NF, firstly the skin can be downloaded from live.warthunder.com/post/27386/ Two things have made me take a break from WT - wall to wall clouds and short games, often both together. I had a terrible run of them and felt like throwing my mouse at the screen, so it was time to step back and do things which I actually enjoy rather than playing a game that induces frustration & rage (I'm a very calm person IRL). I'll be back playing, indeed I dropped on for a couple of quick games tonight.
@nonfique429
@nonfique429 9 жыл бұрын
novocas7rian I somewhat dislike clouds too, they are good for dynamic/realistic maps part where maps we play differ from one game to another but the amount of clouds force players to go dogfight at lower altitudes or have a bad game fighting the enemy within the clouds. On the short games part though, I was always thinking that we as a team didn't do our job at killing their bombers or simply they had too much bombers that our bomber hunters could not catch up killing them, so we lost. As a new player I usually can't figure out the reason why did we win or lose, simply because I can't see the big picture in most of the games. Also, now that I think of it, maybe - if you have the time - you can address this issue in this series, give tips about following the gameplay or knowing the reason that caused one team to lose, etc. I'd gladly appreciate it :)

I might have missed it, but a I thought a helpful peace of advice is to use speed deceptively. Or, in the attackers position, to throttle back to prevent overshoot. It would seem counter-intuitive. But it's always gratifying to really stick on someone's tail because you've throttled back to counter their scissors. I don't know how much this should be used because you sacrifice speed for a single positional advantage. But it's helped me simplify engagements, to allow me another chance at a shot.

@long5hot
@long5hot 9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Deleon To be honest, the beginners guides pretty quickly leap into advanced territory, with the whole energy fighting topic being something that the vast majority of Arcade War Thunderers (and many RB players) never really understand. The individual plane guides probably take things a bit further, also the new "Analyze This" series I just started will hopefully provide plenty of opportunity to explore more in-depth concepts and tactics as well, depending of course on the replays that people send me.

I can't remember who pointed this out to me, but you can also gain the upper hand heads on if you face slightly off to the approaching bogey's vector, and at close range give a bit of rudder to get him on the cross-hairs. Risky and not to the faint of heart, not my got to escape to be sure, but if you're feeling daring... Why not? ;-)

This is the frustrating issue with War Thunder, the rudder can somehow out turn the wing. It gets so much roght for the feel for flying, but that is just nonsense. Great videos mate. Keep them coming.
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 жыл бұрын
Yep its true - rudder should not turn the plane as much as it does, nor should it do so with negligible speed loss. In using rudder turns I'm not flying as a real pilot would, but instead I'm blatantly exploiting the messed-up physics in this game :\
@Statwoir
@Statwoir 9 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, I have learned the hard way as I try to use the manoeuvrability of the Spit against something that should be less manoeuvrable, only to see a very strange high speed rudder turn which becomes my undoing. Shame, most of the flight model feels so right, which is why I play it.

Antifaith29 When I'm maneuvering using keys for elevator/rudder, I don't use the C key for looking around as it isn't needed - mouse aim isn't active while a tail control key's pressed, so you can look around as much as you like without snap-back. Maybe that's it?

Another great guide, thanks! One thing I've wondered about is if you can't dodge head-on encounters, how can you WIN them? Why is it that I get pwned in these nine times out of ten? I hope you might cover that at some point.
@long5hot
@long5hot 5 жыл бұрын
To be honest, while I occasionally mastered head-ons and would go through periods where I'd win most of them, I'd then have a sequence of encounters where I was shot down. I do cover aiming in the head-on in the How to Aim video, but my enemy was a slow ping leading to poor hit detection, hence I always found it better to evade and look for a way to engage that doesn't let the other guy shoot back.

Great vid and thx for the tipps. There are still some things I don't get about the climbing spiral: You say that you are holding rudder and the up elevator. Why is it then that your plane does not go into an increasingly steeper climb, but keeps a flat climb angle(which would never happen if you hold the up elevator)?
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 жыл бұрын
The answer is the speed - notice it drops off very quickly. Very few planes will be able to lift the nose up too far at 140km/h. I'm taking the plane right to the edge of its performance, and using the spiral technique to wring more out of the plane than would be possible if I was banking the plane to turn & climb.

Hi. Learned a lot about energy and b&z from your tutorials. Very good. But when it comes to keyboard assisted flying as discribed here, I can`t get anything right when I try your keystroke advices.( Flying Me109 and FW190 in RB mode.) Hard break or climbing spiral only results in wild loops and other crazy horse behaviour. Anything I missed in setting up my keyboard ?
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 жыл бұрын
Reinhard Breuer Well, bear in mind that these videos are for Arcade mode where the flight models are more forgiving. Even in Arcade, FW190s are not great at hard maneuvers and I generally avoid using the keyboard for elevators & rudder. Its planes with stronger turning abilities that benefit most from keyboard use & that's the case in RB as well, so I wouldn't worry too much about using the keyboard with your German fighters, except for the roll keys of course.
@compfox

Hey longshot, I don't know if you'll end up reading this as this video was uploaded a long time ago, but I wanted to thank you for this series. I've gone from a lousy arcade pilot who constantly lost turn and burns to an experienced player who consistently top 3's the leaderboards. I just wanted to ask you, do these tactics also apply to RB and SB?
@long5hot
@long5hot 8 жыл бұрын
+Walruseon In concept, yes they do, however flight models in RB/SB are nowhere near as forgiving as in AB. Low-tier planes, for the most part, simply lack the power to pull some of these maneuvers in RB, though they can do them in Arcade. Some planes will lose their wings if you push them too hard, or they'll radically drop speed and that'll do you more harm than good. Only higher tier planes can pull off maneuvers like the climbing spiral. I think RB/SB are more about the positioning of your plane approaching combat, the decision of whether to fight or flee, and maneuvering before someone gets a chance to open fire. Generally by the time someone has guns on target in RB, the situation is pretty much decided unless the attacker makes a bad mistake and allows a reversal by overshooting.

These tactics are working in war thunder of course, but they are not realistic manouvers for real flying. It only works in arcade where there is unrealistic physics, mouseaim and external views. Normal break turn is a hard turn into the enemy. Usually enemy cannot see under engine cover (because of internal cockpit view). Accurate deflection shooting is very hard when enemy is invisible to view. Normal break turn saves a lot more energy than your variation of the arcade rudder and elevator turn. Just saying that this advice works best for arcade and realistic battles with mouseaim and externals.
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 жыл бұрын
This is very true. All my videos are for Arcade, and in many ways its just "gaming the system" - using what Arcade provides and pushing it as far as you can, as you do with any computer game. It has little in common with real flying. If you tried to pull some 100% rudder turns at high speed in a real plane you'd probably lose your vertical stabilizer :)

In the flat climbing spiral to the left it looks like he's moving his mouse horizontally to the left as well. Am I seeing that correctly. I'm trying this in a P-40 and it's is not working at all. I'm all over the place doing aileron roles. I don't have enough fingers and hands if he's also using the mouse

if you're holding the key for a tail control surface (rudder and/or elevator) then the plane ignores the mouse - I'm just using it like a free look camera without having to press C.

Hi long5shot, I need some help. I've been flying at high altitudes but I just can't seem to bleed off my opponents speed before they break my wings. Been practising climbing spirals with p-400 and A-36, been really frustrating, could you give pointers?
@long5hot
@long5hot 8 жыл бұрын
+Adam Lee I'd suggest flying planes with better high altitude performance. Both the P-400 and A-36 are better lower down, and it could simply be that you're losing due to their lack of horsepower compared to your opponents. Perhaps try planes like the F6F, the P-47Ds or the F4Us instead?

@long5hot
@long5hot 9 жыл бұрын
Arathaert The key is keeping the cockpit facing the sky. As soon as you let it roll over too far you'll exit the climbing spiral and be into some other maneuver, so keep tapping the roll keys as needed to keep that cockpit facing up and you'll stay in the spiral.
@MaximilianHartTV
@MaximilianHartTV 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! It's not that it's rolling over... it's just pulling up too sharply and goes vertical. That or it never really goes up, even though I'm holding the elevator key, and just kinda turns gently and noses down (I expect that's a speed issue). I'm in an F2A-3 if that helps.

Longshot, How does one perform these manuvers in RB since the rudder is only useful in small turns.
@long5hot
@long5hot 8 жыл бұрын
To be honest, most of these maneuvers are Arcade-centric and would not work as well in RB. You can pull a hard break in RB but generally only with elevator, using the roll key to change your angle as needed, but depending on the plane it could cost you a lot of speed and leave you vulnerable to a second attack. Clever use of the roll key while holding up elevator, could however force an overshoot, as demonstrated by Messer Smitt in his vids. Climbing Spirals with rudder are generally out of the question. Snap rolls depend heavily on the plane's flight model as to what the rudder does - on some planes it can be done, but on others it will throw you into a stall. Generally the oblique approach followed by a change of direction in & under the attacker is a better head-on avoidance method in RB.

You can send replays to iamlong5hot@gmail.com - first though, watch your replay to make sure the camera's motion is replicated correctly. You can see your camera movements by pressing the semi-colon key. The recent updates to War Thunder seem to have semi-broken this feature which severely detracts from what I can do in an Analyze This vid.
