Back in 1987, the Fox Network was brand new and needed hits. One of the first shows that broke out in popularity was 21 Jump Street, starring a then-unknown actor named Johnny Depp. He played a young police officer named Tom Hanson who joins a unit of young cops sent to infiltrate high schools. His fellow cops include Peter DeLuise’s Doug Penhall, Holly Robinson’s Judy Hoffs and Dustin Nguyen’s Harry Truman. Later, they’re joined by Richard Greico’s Booker, who, like Depp, became a breakout heartthrob and got his own short-lived show. Of the course of the five seasons, Depp would become a movie star thanks to Edward Scissorhands, and the show would eventually wind up ending its run in syndication.
Years later, the show is an interesting time capsule, which spawned to wildly successful big-screen reboots, 21 Jump Street and its sequel, 22 Jump Street, although they parodied what was essentially a serious cop show. So join us on this week’s Gone But Not Forgotten as we dig into this eighties time capsule.

I actually really loved Michael bendettis episodes! It was a good heartfelt story most of the times. And even the episode with Peter delusive falling for a heroin addict cop was really good and spot on. This should've gone at least 6-8 seasons! I wish they had made more seasons with the cast from the 80s and 90s. A new cast this era doesn't feel right like the reboot movies! Those were sh*t!!!

I was 13 when this show first aired, perfect age to soak it up. I took fashion cues from Depps character and enjoyed the friendship banter between DeLuise and Depp. The classic angry captain etc. It was a mix of cool teen stuff, a bit of life lesson stuff and a bit of light-hearted action. It was fresh, it was new, Depp was smokin cool, it gave us hope, it made sense at the time.

I started watching Jump Street a number of years ago, well after it was on TV. I was probably too young when it aired and would have hated it if I wasn't, but I ended up really enjoying it. It also caused me to have a little bit of... crisis epiphany. I remember the end of the AIDS scare but never understood what was going on. So when I saw the AIDS episode, everything kind of clicked into place. It was messed up. To know that that's what was going on and I was almost completely oblivious as to why, then to finally learn the answer was something else. The movie was fun to watch, but I didn't like that it took a (mostly) serious and interesting premise and then lampooned it so hard. I'd love to see a show like this made today.

Jonah Hill has no business being as popular as he is, his routine is, to be as obscene, as, possible, that's it, people have got to, wake up, and, realize, he's a, sad, one-trick pony, at least the studio bailed out before it got, too stale.

Actually, the show lasted five seasons not four. The last season switched from Network to syndication. DeLuise, Williams and Robinson stayed with the show and producers even brought in Peter's little brother Michael as Penhall's half brother. The Jump Street pilot, as aired, was Patrick Hasburgh second attempt at writing this show. I actually read his first attempt and it was 100 % different. Hanson was trying to solve the murder of a female undercover Jump Street detective. Hasburgh only got half way thru that script when, and I'm only guessing this part, Cannell felt a "murder case" probably wasn't very relatable to the preteen audience of a show that's on Sunday Nights at 7pm! The A.W.O.L. script was written by future X-Files and Final Destination scribes Glen Morgan and James Wong. Sadly, the soundtrack to this episode was all R.E.M. songs, but because of copyright reasons, this music was replaced on the DVD verison. As for one of my favorite episodes, season one's Blindsided, it was written by The Devil's Advocate screenwriter John Lemkin. Depp plays opposite his girlfriend, at the time, Sherylyn Finn. 21 Jump Street is one of my all time favorite shows. I taped them all on VHS so I have the episodes with their original soundtracks. The music on the pilot episode is basically the entire Back in the High Life album by Stevie Winwood. It's probably the one aspect of the pilot that hasn't aged poorly. A semi serious new Jump Street is the perfect material for a TV reboot. If done correctly, the show would be awesome. The films were pretty good, but they played it as a comedy and that's not what the show was. The same was done to Starsky & Hutch. Sad.
@matthewdaley746
@matthewdaley746 2 жыл бұрын
The only good thing about the films is they realized the premise was limited, and, rapidly bailed out, Jonah Hill's obscenities will only get you, so, far, simple as that.
@ToddH76
@ToddH76 11 ай бұрын
Yes Yes Yes! As someone who watched it from day 1 and loved it I agree on the reboot. If done for cable with no holds barred it could be outstanding. The topics with today's youth under such pressure would be endless, Politics, economics, women's rights, gun control etc...its an endless well of storylines and in the right hands would be a terrific show.

Bit of trivia: In the 2000s, Dustin Nguyen played a small time drug dealer/addict in the Australian film "Little Fish" starring Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving. Ironically, in the film his character is meant to be Vietnamese Australian, a former delinquent youth whose family sends him off to Hong Kong for several years to straighten out and keep him away from drugs. Nguyen struggled with doing an Australian accent so they changed the script - Nguyen's character was sent to relatives in Canada instead, explaining his North American accent. Nguyen was playing a character many years younger than his actual age (he played Blanchett's former flame and is meant to be around the same age). Little Fish is up on KZbin if you want to check it out.

had no idea 21 jumped street was filmed here in Vancouver. basically everything now days are, but 80/90s wasn't as common. got to check this out. that would explain why Johnny Depp's always coming here for like hospital openings and such, just thought it was cause he was filming. edit: after research, it seem this was one of the first tv shows to use Vancouver for filming and basically helped establish Vancouver for the filming hotspot in the movie industries. basically everything is filmed here..every other show I just spend the whole time recognizing and totally losing immersion. still fun to see how many locations I recognize. literally there are movie sets everywhere..i just walk right through them now. every parking lot is full of there trailers and catering trucks. every street has there neon coloured signs placed to help direct the crews to the locations.

As Johnny Depp became increasingly frustrated with the series, he began to put forth ridiculous suggestions for his character to the producers. One such a suggestion included the discovery by the other characters that Tom Hanson was obsessed with peanut butter, and would be discovered by the other characters smearing it all over his naked body.

Two things and a fun fact: 1- Another show that also didn't end an episode with everything resolved? Miami Vice which also took some very dark and serious stories. 21 Jump Street, when it found its groove, was more akin to Miami Vice but revolving around the teenage circles. 2- Booker (the show) was alright but they couldn't figure out what they wanted the series to be. At times they leaned too heavily on making Dennis Booker solely a goofball/comic relief and others more of an action hero. In general it felt that the producers were too afraid to go too serious or dark with his stories even though they clearly were going for a 20-something demographic instead of the teen one on 21 Jump Street. Fun fact: While not the first one to do it at the time Jump Street and Booker were a 'shared universe' and so characters would cross over a few times, including one 'event' crossover where the story started on an episode of Booker and concluded in an episode of 21 Jump Street. However, it was an odd crossover as clearly the producers wanted to keep the episodes bottled enough to work on their respective series in isolation, thus Booker doesn't appear in the 21 Jump Street Episode and the Jump Street cast only makes a tiny appearance in the Booker episode). Yet the episodes are supposed to be connected but end up feeling both detached and yet missing a section if watched separately. Btw- Nowadays you can easily find 21 Jump Street to watch in places like Roku's own streaming channel as well as Tubi and others. Booker is not as widely available, but it is always somewhere such as Tubi or Vudu. However, evidently due to music rights, it is not the fitting intro featuring Billy Idol's "Rock In The City Tonight" but rather a knockoff song trying to sound like the former.

Miami Vice was the first police show, without, unambiguously happy endings, if it wasn't a downer ending, it was bittersweet to the extreme, sadly, Richard Grieco just didn't have Johnny Depp's range, and, when If Looks Could Kill flopped, he was through.

Always loved Johnny Depp but for whatever reason I hadn’t watched this until recent years.. Somehow I switched off to it when they took Kojak off Hulu and I was looking for something similar.. If you can look past the Reagan-esque war on drugs 80’s era propaganda you’ll find a very compelling show.. i really hope they bring it back whether it’s a movie or series so long as it has the original cast

Johnny Depp did not want to work on a television series, but agreed to a six-year contract, only because he did not believe the show would last more than one season. He also found it difficult to turn down the money and the chance to work with Frederic Forrest. But the show became a huge success mostly due to Depp's presence. By the third season, Depp was chafing at having to stay with the show instead of accepting various film offers. He began to complain about the scripts and often gave listless performances. With the help of his lawyers, Depp was released from his contract, and left the show after the fourth season.

A lot to unpack here but this was as much as any show ever a moment in time. You didn't discuss one of the main draws of the show and that was the music. They made excellent music choices and had an excellent score thanks to Peter Bernstein. Although Hair Metal was king at the time, 21 Jumpstreet is a window into what was coming and embraced alternative and underground music. The show looks and feels like the seattle music scene that emerged nationally in 91. Being shot in Vancouver was a unique look at the Pacific Northwest where all the bands had been active since the mid 80's locally. Boots, Flannel, Leather jackets etc. Its all there in 21 jumpstreet. People confuse this show as an 80's thing like say, The breakfast club or something but this show really is closer to what the early 90s were like. Thank god for the german boxset with the music in tact.......As a kid when this aired I watched it from day 1 and still love it...The topics were fascinating at that moment in time, Aids, drugs, gangs, racism, homophobia etc. It could have been better but I still love it.

The irony of that 1-800 cocaine helpline number! Depp went on to famously date notorious hard partying supermodel Kate Moss - the model who embodied the 90s waif/heroin chic fashion aesthetic. Although skinny and rather petite (for a model), Moss allegedly had a tough constitution and became known for sucking up large amounts of cocaine and booze. Hence her nickname "the Tank"!
