The 1987 sci-fi action classic RoboCop is one of those rare-perfect movies. Everything about it works just right. The satire. The violence. The characters. The design of RoboCop himself. And it’s difficult to follow up on perfection. This is evident in RoboCop 2, a movie that tried to carry on the story... But ended up feeling tonally inconsistent and a bit scattered. It’s a fun movie, but not on the level of its predecessor. And now, we’re going to dig into just what happened to RoboCop 2!
Written by: Cody Hamman
Edited by: Brandon Nally
Narrated by: Tyler Nichols
Produced by: John Fallon and Andrew Hatfield
Executive produced by: Berge Garabedian
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: What Happened To This Horror Movie?

@@Healthy_Toki Idk bro Hollywood hasn't made a good scifi action rated R film in 30 years. They remade Robocop with a PG13 rating. That was way more detrimental to the franchise and the movie business as a whole than the great Robocop 2 did.

@@Djp2987 I think it gets a bad rap, and partly because it is a bit regressive. Murphy made all that progress getting back his identity and since the overshadowing plot was loosing yourself in private cooperations (or something), it misses that mark. And the old man went backwards to. On a plus note the RoboCain was incredible and so were the fight scenes.

It's baffling that Robocop was made for 14 million and 40 years later with all the technology, you couldn't make a movie remotely close to as good for a hundred mill. It should be the opposite. If you gave a guy 14 mill today he should be able to vastly improve the effects from that movie 🙃

What happened is it became arguably the greatest sci-fi action film ever. A movie about the nature of freewill, moral duty and the contrast between the power of programming and brainwashing as opposed to deep-seated moral obligations. When Robocop sees that all his prime directives are gone...and then gets up and proceeds to go on performing his duty and rallying the cops to do likewise, that's one of the most understated, unpretentious yet profound frigging moments EVER IN MOVIES! "Are we cops...?" he asks, to which the striking police respond that yes, they are cops, after all. Then, as he walks off, they ask where he's going and he simply says, "Cain. I'm coming for Cain." He wasn't Robcop because of OCP's programming, he was Robocop because of Alex Murphy's sense of duty and obligation.

It's a masterpiece. It has a dozen plot points and none of it comes out of nowhere. it all developes through the course of several arcs within a movie. Even OCP planning a hostile takeover on the city. By the time the movie is over it feels like you watched an entire series. It is fulfilling, leaves no loose lies, none of it is scuffed. I will allways look back at this movie as the most well delivered storyline with so much content in the length of a film.

I thought it was a good movie. The child was a good idea, since we've never really seen something like that in a movie. And the fact that he died and Robocop actually cared, and held his hand while he was dying, was a good part of the movie. Also how they corrupted his system to make him all weird was a good way to show him in a new light. The fact that he electrocutes himself to go back to factory settings was a brilliant move. We have already seen complicated matters in the first movie. They were resolved and no need to drag something in there just because. Less is more sometimes. Let's not forget the part were they completely destroy him and throw him in front of the police station. That was awesome as well. And then the part with Caine was also very good. I think trying to use a criminal as Robocop 2 was well fitted into this universe, since OCP was always trying to find new ways to maximize and guarantee their control. And using a criminal addicted to drugs, he had to return to OCP and behave accordingly to be rewarded. Then there is the family part of Murphy that needed to be resolved. They didn't exploit that enough in this movie, but it was also not evaded. Enough so you could have picked up on it in a sequel movie. How the smashes the brains of Cain is totally awesome!

It's funny how the passage of time works. When Robocop 2 came out, no one liked it. Now it's built up a pretty good cult following. I personally love it. It's absolutely insane.

As a kid I remember liking it, but the scene where Robo is broken into pieces was just haunting, RoboCop 3 was complete garbage since even with my incredibly low expectations as a child I was like _"wtf is this?!"_

I agree with your assesment, but the Cain cyborg was terrifying and made it worth watching. The cyborg suicides were something I'd not seen before and left an impression on my 12 year-old self. I really miss the days of practical special effects.

Robocop 2 is a movie making fun of sequels like TMNT2. It makes fun of corporations taking apart the original to make it more kid friendly and even adds the young kid trope but turns it on its head by having the kid me the most violent & vulgar one in the movie. It’s amazing

I honestly do love this movie! Grabbed it in 4k when it came out last year. My favorite interpretation of this film is that it is an allegory about corporate forced sequels. Also, Robocain is my favorite stop motion thing ever. Got myself a little figurine and everything!

I agree with the others - this movie is one of my favorites. The rundown Detroit scenery, the underground cult drug addicts, the humor that comes with Robo’s reprogramming and most of all, just how menacing Robocain was. As a kid, his scenes TERRIFIED me, akin to the foot chase at the end of the first Terminator.

I feel like this was a solid sequel. I like it. The Scene where Robocop comes face to face with his wife, and he says he doesn't know her and her husbands likeness was used to honour his sacrifice. To me, this was an important scene, where Alex realises he cannot give her what she needs, and lies to her to let her go. As for 3? I watched it once. Never again. It's awful.

When I was a kid I grew up watching the robocop movies, i love them very much, later as an adult I realized the deeper meaning, the first one being a dark tragic story, the second one, he faced the enemy of a drug worshipping cult as well as the enemies inside OCP, the third one the whole city is going to hell, and he fights for the resistance, there's also the 2014 reboot but we don't have to talk about that😅

The draft of RoboCop 2 The Corporate Wars was adapted to the pilot episode of the 1994 Live-action TV series as a feature length TV movie, with the original writers getting a credit. It actually flows better than the original draft with the revisions made and set the tone for what the TV series would be with it's near-future cyberpunk world Also Cain is an Amazon War veteran, and people are speculating that he created Nuke as his means of coping before his was dishonorably discharged and started selling it on the street (you can see this when Dr Faxx is reviewing his profile later in the movie). The Amazon War was also an underlying subplot in the 1994 TV series, and people also speculate that Murphy was going to be sent to fight in the theater, similar to what happened in the Marvel Comics series in the late 80s

I loved it. At the time, I seriously thought it was most violent film that I ever seen (until I saw John Woo's The Killer, soon after). Great stop motion effects too. For me, Kershner then had two great sequels to film classics. I didn't know it was his last film, gotta say that is a good way to go out.

The first one will always be the GOAT. It was ultra violent dark and gritty. The second one however, I felt it had a more creepy vibe because of robo Cain. I was 9 when this movie came out and remember watching it in theaters with my dad and at the brain in water scene I’d have all sorts of questions in my head like wtf.. Is he actually seeing himself get butchered up on the operating table? 😅😅😅
