I can’t explain and I don’t know why, but I love this glorious train wreck of a movie. Southland Tales is one of only a few films that is simultaneously a mess and a masterpiece. From a narrative and pacing standpoint the film is infuriating and at times nonsensical and yet from a cinematic and thematic standpoint it’s both stunning and unlike anything else out there. It’s an absolutely confounding work, even as someone who considers Donnie Darko one of his all time favourites and yet since watching it a couple years ago, the film has never left my mind. There really is nothing like it and only the recent Under the Silver Lake comes close to the dizzying, hypnotic feeling that this film gives. I seriously hope that Kelly gets the chance to finally finish this narrative as a Netflix mini series or something but honestly I don’t the stars would align for it again. Still Richard Kelly is one of the most misunderstood and under appreciated directors out there. His narrative voice is so distinct and if he’d have come up around the time of A24 and the indie rise, he’d be a far more celebrated name.

Yeah it's weird how well Philip K Dick movies get received when this one fits right up that ally. Like Scanner Darkly and Minority Report. Yeah some bits are corny and funny but it's meant to be. The movie knows it's ridiculous. The weirdest thing is that a lot of it has come true. The whole influencers/moviestars/pornstars over attention and the surveillance. It's felt to stupid back then and not stupid enough now. I too love this movie and I hope he gets to make that director's cut. Honestly the fragmented half-stories are one of the reasons I love this movie so much. The whole setup really makes you imagine just how messed up and bizarre the world is from small details. Only ever saw it once, and that was back then. I found it a pretty exhausting experience as opposed to Donnie Darko. That movie was complex, hard to fully grasp on first viewing - but you were invested anyway because you cared for the characters and the situations they were in were relatable. However, with Southland Tales you were treated with an abundance of shrill caricatures in borderline unfollowable subplots and I just couldn't be bothered. Also I found it visually unappealing. But well, might be worth revisiting after all this time. I'll see.

It's great that you're covering this! The whole thing is a tribute to the work of Philip K. Dick: crazy situations, everyone on edge for reasons they can't really explain, and no one really clear on just what reality is. It's too bad that Kelly wrote Part 1 of the movie's narrative as a graphic novel; the movie begins with (if I remember correctly) a big Roman numeral '2'. This is not a good way to win over an audience.

I know this movie's an absolute mess, but I really love it, and think it's underappreciated. It's extraordinarily visionary, both in terms of the political/technological themes at work at the time, and presaging the future. I also like that it's a weird, obtuse film that forces you to think about it - and it looks great. Feels like a double standard that David Lynch gets heaped with praise for traits which, personally, I thought Richard Kelly executed better and with more substance.

This might have worked if it was made today as an 8-hour HBO miniseries. As a feature film the idea is way too complicated. Expecting moviegoers to read a 6-issue graphic novel prequel to be able to understand the movie is incredibly naive.

This movie is actually terrible. All these comments of people saying it's underrated are fricking embarrassing. The world building was horrible. A bunch of stuff happens for no reason. The final edit was completely vapid with seemingly dozens of plot threads introduced with no payoff. The movie's main concern seemed to be shoving in as many popular celebrities as possible to the detriment of every other aspect. The comparison to Philip K Dick makes a certain amount of sense, yet I consider it offensive nonetheless. Dick was a literal schizophrenic but his stories were not intentionally incoherent and abstract. What a huge waste of everyone's time and money. 👎

what's with the initials bs. i thought it was very clear that they would steal the his original script then claim credit for it, then lie to bs about it. so don't feel bad that dimension collapsed, they had it coming..

I love southland tales. I have no problem with this film.

The irony is that the two main characters (Boxer and Roland) shouldn't of been there at all 🤔

Every once in a while I catch myself saying "The ocean is in control." Dunno why.

I remember watching this. Like Donnie Darko, which was drastically cut down and edited, I wonder if it could have been saved by outside help. I recall the Justin Timberlake singing sequence was awesome and also the Ice Cream Van sequence was an amazing spectacle. It wasn't total shit, it was just really muddled and convoluted.
