"It was actually Barry Sonnenfel who ultimately approved the massive, motorized arachnid, although he admitted it was one of the factors that ruined the film." Okay, I'm going to take an unpopular opinion here, the spider didn't ruin the film. Honestly, the spider was one of the better parts of the movie (except that they gave away the mystery of its existence in TV advertisements, trailers, interviews, and behind-the-scenes documentaries). This movie had a lot more going against it that ultimately derailed its quality. The spider may be a good punchline because of Jon Peters, but it really wasn't the issue. So many other things were the issue.

When Tom Cruz rebooted the Mission Impossible series from the 60's he brought it to current and amped up the action. @williamblakehall55663 жыл бұрын
I loved the show, it was steampunk before anyone even knew steampunk was a thing -- and seeking out that sensibility would have helped a lot. I find the spider to actually be rather neutral and distracting -- it was not that I minded so much as the terrible writing. The original characters got ditched altogether -- Robert Conrad had a decent "cool -- for a square" vibe and Artemus Gordon was primarily a master of disguise, not a Q to West's Bond. Lusting after yet another Will Smith 4th of July completely overlooked the obvious fact that Smith's signature cockiness had zero to do with James West. The Addams Family worked because it embraced the "spooky is cool" vibe even better than the show could. When you ditch the essence of what you are allegedly paying homage to, you're asking for trouble.
@loganholmberg22953 жыл бұрын
Yeah no...steampunk dates all the way back to the 80s and even earlier. There's 20000 leagues under the sea with Kurt Douglas, the first half of Miyazaki's career, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and tons of 50s and 60s scifi that have steam punk in it. Heck you can even call 1902's a trip to the Moon the first steampunk. Lile everything in this movie its just a copy of earlier and better movies. But if you like it thats cool. I like watching it once in a while cause I still think its kinda funny.

To me the main problem of this movie was that it didn't really seem to focus on anything and therefore it became a mess. The steampunk setting in the Wild West might have worked had it been used more persistently, but the movie basically flipped between being at times a pure western, at times pure steampunk and rarely a blend of the two. On top of that the main characters didn't seem to have much chemistry nor consistency, which is always a bad thing for a movie and it made the jokes fall flat. It's a shame, as the movie has some interesting scenes and themes that might have worked had they been worked out and integrated better.

Compared to most of what Hollywood has been churning out the past decade Wild Wild West is Oscar worthy.

Enjoyed this when it came out. As did everyone else I know. ...Never knew it supposedly sucked until just recently. ??

I always feel sorry for Salma Hayek. She’s very famous but all her attempts to be in real blockbuster movies tend to fall flat, through no fault of her own. Any film with Will Smith must have looked like a sure fire success in the 90s.
@loganholmberg22953 жыл бұрын
Thank god Wil Smith wasn;t in the Matrix, After hearing how he uses his star power to get script rewrites imagine what a trash fire he could have turned that movie into? Mr Reeves on the other hand is a humbleman who through his dedication to fullfilling a role makes him one of the greatest action movie stars ever. Still.
@minisithunknown55683 жыл бұрын
I never thought of that. But I agree the Mr. Reeves was the best for The Matrix. But I thought all the actors in this movie were great.

oh gosh, 1999. Toy Story 2, Matrix, Phantom Menace... What a year that was for me. I never knew how pivotal the next year would be! Doesn't seem that long ago...

I always loveedddd Wild Wild West growing up. Only to find out like 20 years later it go horrible reviews. To this day, I don’t understand why. It’s fun, free entertainment. It didn’t change my life, but was worth multiple watches IMO. 🤷🏼♂️

This movie holds the record for being the only movie my dad ever explicitly forbade me to watch as a kid. I was 11yrs old at the time and being a huge Will Smith fan at the time and since it was being promoted EVERYWHERE I was naturally excited to see it. By chance my dad got to see it before me and he absolutely HATED IT. Loathed it. I made the mistake of exclaiming how excited I was to eventually see it and his reaction caught me completely off guard. Never have I seen him so worked up and just plain angry over a movie before. He’s one of the nicest and easy going people I’ve ever known and he just simply barked out “You are NOT ALLOWED to watch that… EVER! Understand!?” Then he just stormed off yelling obscenities in Spanish. Several days later I tried to prod for a better explanation by justifying that it was “only PG13” and I instantly knew I had made a huge mistake. Keep in mind I was a pre teen and my dad has always been uncomfortable discussing sex, even to this day and responded by saying “There’s no sex or naked ladies it’s just the biggest piece of sh## movie I’ve ever seen and I don’t want my children watching that god damn *chingadera* [Mexican Spanish word for piece of sh##]! End of discussion!” I swear to this very day I have honored his wishes and have never seen more than 5min of WWW from flipping past it on cable. From what I understand he really did me a favor that day pre-y2k. Thanks pops.

At 19yrs old,all I cared about was trying the Western whopper at B.K. Another relic of the times,when fast food did tie in's with summer blockbusters.
