I'll explain it like this. Many people living in the US are pretty critical of our country and politics. We know there's a lot we could be doing better. But the minute someone fron outside the US criticizes it the spirits of the Founding Fathers possess us and go into a berserker like rage with pride for our country taking any and all criticism as a threat.

Sounds similar to our mindset here in Italy. We are extremely negative and pessimistic towards our country, especially regarding politics, economy, industry, etc... sometimes even bordering on hating our own homeland. But when an outsider criticizes Italy, like that tik-toker who criticized Amalfi for having to take a long walk with her luggage for reaching the hotel, all Italy came united in insulting her obnoxious attitude.

Have a foreigner criticize our country though, which we already know is flawed and not perfect (because no country is), and you suddenly have us united like it's WW2 again. Not even fully true because ammunition measured in calibers are still popular (.45 acp, .50 caliber, 30-06/.308, .38, just to name a few popular examples) though most people who are into guns/ammo probably do know the conversions, or at least I do. Fun fact: the ratio between a kilometer and a mile is really close to the golden ratio. Another series of numbers like this is the Fibonacci Sequence. So, you can use the sequence to estimate miles to kilometers! So, 5 miles is about 8 kilometers, 8 miles is about 13 kilometers, and so on. Also, just tweak the in-between numbers based on vibes, so 4 miles is roughly 7 kilometers, etc.

The metric system is great for everything except for your feelings about temperature. In this aspect Fahrenheit is a human 10 scale. Would you want to live somewhere with constantly 0° f would you want to live somewhere constantly where it's 100° f. Fahrenheit gives you more scale for how the temperature feels outside. Everything else can be used with metric.
@Dushmann_
@Dushmann_ 4 күн бұрын
I agree. Metric for science, imperial for daily life. Canada, UK and Australia have the perfect mix of both systems - we use imperial for daily life, but then we use metric for more technical things or things that need to be accurate. Like you said, Imperial measurements are just more human-friendly. Like, inches and feet are the perfect sizes for humans to use, while centimetres are just too small and they don't have an equivalent for a foot in metric.

still stupid that we didn't convert back when everybody else did. it would have been much cheaper back then. Back in the 1960s, there was a huge movement to unify different country's measurement systems, many countries did actually go ahead and change their measurements during that time period. the US really wanted to go ahead with this, but there was a really powerful automobile lobby that didn't want that because it would cost too much money for them. in the end we decided not to

- A unit of length divisible by 12 instead of 10, which means a third and a quarter of a foot are easily measured - Five different measurement levels for volume, each of which is useful in different situations - Temperature measurement is more precise without having to go into decimal points Tell me what's so good about metric again?

- Multiplication and division by 10 is much easier especially for larger numbers. How many inches in 57 feet? - So you have to use more than one measurment for volume but you are sneakily trying to call it an advantage? Nice try - That is a non-argument based on something completely arbitrary, because precision has nothing to do with going into decimal points or not, by definition anything for which one unit corresponds to a smaller change will have that property. For instance, you could use for example deciCelsius, where 10 degrees decicelsius = 1 degree celsius. Bam, now, according to your arbitrary choice, they are now more "precise" than Fahrenheit. I don't know, if there's nothing good about it, why does everyone, including you, use metric system whenever actual precision is required such as in science?
@grfrjiglstan
@grfrjiglstan 3 күн бұрын
@@ric6611 - 570 plus 114, or 684. - Cups are for milk, pints are for beer, quarts are for motor oil, and gallons are for gas. There's dedicated 1/3 and 1/4 cup measuring cups, instead of having to go for the glass one with the red numbers on the side every time. - You could, but people don't. And it is subjective, but 30 degree weather doesn't sound like a scorcher to me. 90 does. We use metric for scientific stuff as a courtesy to the rest of the world. We had to do it for the ISS because other contributing countries weren't cool like us and we didn't want confusion. The Brits use Imperial for many distance measurements because it's more convenient. That's why it's called Imperial, even.
@shaynegadsden
@shaynegadsden 8 сағат бұрын
Nothing you do is that important for starters by using metric if you need greater accuracy in your measurements you can just drop down a unit which can generally be done in your head because it is so simple to work, same for fluids why would you need multiple types of measurement when 1 is faster and more accurate and an easily convert from the smallest precision measurement to massive scales. As for temperature you serious want to complain about the simplicity of decimal points when you measuring system uses fractions
