Okay so, for anyone who is still confused : gender envy is basically the good equivalent of "second hand dysphoria" You see someone (or something), you're like "ooo I wanna look like that!" in a gender way, and there you go gender envy

I think it's all in gender expression. like if I see a cis guy wearing nail polish and jewelry or like a skirt or something, I'm like "I wish I could pull that off" but if I wore that kind of thing, I would look like a girl... which is the opposite of what I want. I think I envy the ability to wear whatever you want and present however you want while not getting misgendered constantly.

the best way i can describe gender envy is like this: i am a femme presenting afab enby who is more masc leaning (i have to present femme bc of family). i get gender envy when i see people presenting their masculinity in a way i’m not able to. because gender is abstract and complex, people view it differently, so sometimes people get gender envy from abstract and complex things (such as forests, inanimate things and video game characters)

The line between being jealous of someone's style and gender envy is feeling like you can't obtain that style because you don't pass as that person's gender. So a pre-T non-passing FtM could get gender envy of yungblud being able to paint his nails and wear a skirt and have that style and yet still look male so it definitely does stem from dysphoria but is also about style. It's very similar to the whole "wanting to be feminine the way boys are".

any man who is comfortable in their masculinity and is open to express their feminine traits as well is a huge source of my own gender envy. as a pre T trans guy I can’t be too feminine or people think i’m not trans, maybe after top surgery and with a deeper voice it’s different bc I would be more sure of myself but that’s why I think gender envy ends up being your “trans goals” lot of the time.

For me this describes how I feel when I'm outside and I see men and feel depressed and bitter about having a female body. It's like feeling like they have something you just can't have but you want very badly, basically just the fact that they're male and look like how I see myself inside.

I've understood gender envy as basically being either the dysphoric feelings associated with someone or something outside of myself. For example, I had gender envy of Brian Molko as a teen. This was different than regular envy because I did everything within my power to look like him but still felt dysphoric, so I knew the missing piece was gender. Once it gets to objects, it becomes more personal experience driven. Most of the men in my life and none of the women I knew played guitar, so I found some sense of euphoria in learning guitar, however it never felt exactly "masculine" in the way I was searching for because I was missing the gender expression and identity behind it. So guitar=gender envy because I associated them with masculinity at a young age but it didn't eleviate the "bad feeling" (dysphoria) in the way I thought it would because I was really searching for the gender associated with playing guitar, not the actual activity itself.

from my understanding, gender envy is either wanting to be like someone specifically because they're so confident in their gender (that might also be the same as your gender identity) and how they carry themselves. or they look like how you want to present, but you can't for various reasons yet. but also, you can feel envious about someone's gender because in society they are more accepted. like how some cis women can feel envious about men. I don't really think it's exclusively for trans people, but cis people likely don't experience it the same way as trans people do.

I used to get really obsessed with certain people and I wasn’t sure why, they were usually androgynous or masculine presenting. I’m autistic, so I thought it might just be hyper-fixation on them because they’re an actor in something I love or they’re in a band I’m really into. I’m also bisexual with a strong preference for women/femme people, so this fixation on men and masc people didn’t make much sense to me. Then I started to realise that I didn’t really feel a connection to my assigned gender and that I may be non-binary. Suddenly, these fixations started to make a little more sense. Unlike most of my friends, I wasn’t obsessed with these people because I wanted to ‘rail them’ or even be in relationships with them, I was obsessed with them because they had what I wanted. The feeling of longing for this intangible thing was painful, I realised that I would never truly be able to have that kind of energy or presentation and it hurt. Here’s a short list of some of the more famous guys I felt this way about: - Ben Barnes (the main one, he’s just so perfect and everything I want to be and be perceived as) - Robert Sheehan (pretty self explanatory, in my opinion) - Conan Gray (he just comes off as being so comfortable with himself) - Kit Harington (the vibes) - Brian Molko (more vibes, his exploration of different presentation and his confidence is everything)

I think one of the key aspects of gender envy is that usually you are envying people who are obviously presenting the gender you wish to present as, but don’t need to try to be a stereotype of that gender to obviously present as it. Harry Styles is one I see pretty often because of the femininity he often injects into his appearance, and his less ‘masculine’ behaviour, while still being obviously male. Having that ease in expressing your own personality and identity, even when that identity isn’t ‘the norm’ for that gender. It’s a facet of the whole ‘i have to present as a WO/MANLY WO/ MAN in order for people to see me as a wo/man (and the same kind of gender envy applies for non binary people whose presentation leans one way or another between masc/fem while still being obviously andro.)

hey bestie, for me, it's more of how people present their gender. for me it's seeing these feminine men with masculine features, and I'm like "oo I want that" so i want their features/voice/mannerisms.

After accepting my sexuality I had a lot of issues with gender envy. I questioned my gender (cis female) a lot before realizing that it was definitely more of an aesthetic thing, and now that I've gotten more ways to express myself the way I wanted to (short hair, different style of clothing), I haven't questioned my gender at all. I think the line between envying someone's aesthetic/presentation and envying someone's gender is fairly thin, so it's good to try and understand yourself and which you're feeling!

I think I'm stuck in the same position. I'm a cis bisexual woman who presents femme cause #family, but I wish so fucking bad to have more of a masc gender expression, so sometimes I get this weird feeling of wanting to look like a boy. Not to mention that I also wish my attraction to girls was respected as theirs is and I were taken seriously. Is this gender envy or nothing to do with it?

gender envy for me is when my heart aches because I can't present the way some things or folks present.

Gender envy is an interesting topic to explore. I think the difference between feeling ‘envious’ and ‘jealous’ needs to be talked about more. I view it more as gender inspiration/aspiration. I’m going to create my own gender envy list.... thanks for sharing yours Noah!

i'm a cis girl, i thought i experienced gender envy, but having watched this i think i misunderstood the definition. i think i experience what noah was explaining about how you are envious of someone's vibe and the way they present themselves, it just kinda happens that all of those people for me are males who's vibe is kinda feminine. i feel like it could still have something to do with gender though because i have "gender envy" for objects and pictures that make no sense to most people but it if feels like "omg that has such a femininely masculine aura, being a girl if i did that thing it wouldn't have the right vibe and it would feel totally wrong but if i were a guy this specific thing would feel completely right and so i'm envious of that". or maybe its rooted in internalised misogyny but i'm not gonna explain that one lol. anyways i hope this made sense to someone

I might be completely off but as a non binary person I always explained it as a feeling to how I wish people would understand my gender, like it’s how I understand my gender and I wish people especially cis people could understand it
