Getting to see actual combat in with the tools and weaponry available by people who are not highly trained martial artists gives us a better glimpse into how wars, and techniques were developed throughout the ages. @xXZaxoflameXx
@xXZaxoflameXx Жыл бұрын
@@pyropulseIXXI Ehhh, not really. I mean, it's more effective at killing obviously, because you're using weapons, but it literally is just fencing. It's historical fencing. Like, we study historical fencing masters, who described themselves as fencing masters, and wrote books about fencing. The way you describe it as this epic study of "killing blows" and "finishing execution moves" misrepresents what we do. Yes, we study "killing blows", but that's because hitting somebody with a sword kills them. Modern Olympic fencers study "killing blows" too, because swords kill people. At the end of the day, we're fencing.
@sorkeror
@sorkeror Жыл бұрын
@@xXZaxoflameXx I agree with your statement but would like to add (for people who don't know) that in HEMA your real goal is to hit your opponent w/o getting hit yourself, this is the main difference between HEMA and olympic fencing, where it's ok to be hit if you only hit your opponent a fraction of a second earlier.
@xXZaxoflameXx
@xXZaxoflameXx Жыл бұрын
@@sorkeror That's true. HEMA extends back to the time when people were having life-and-death duels, and it was essential to avoid getting hit. Sharp swords are very unpleasant to be hit with; even a small cut could be permanently debilitating or even kill within seconds depending on where it lands.

I do HEMA and I love it. I can only afford gambeson and a modern fencing mask and such, but one day I want to get the proper armour. It's a really great sport and I would recommend it. If you are worried about it being dangerous then don't because you can stick to completely safe nylon weapons (Of course steel is way better but nylon is also cheaper because you don't need the armour). When you do grappling properly it makes you feel like a super knight.

For some clarification, reenactment and Larp are really different things, larp being storyline driven and fantasy, reenactment is the historic portrayal of a certain period and not really focussed on fighting. I would also say that, while they use medieval weapons and armour in a broad sense in this medieval MMA, there is not much historic about it. HEMA is a sport where practitioners learn swordfighting (or other weapons) with the actual mediaval techniques based on manuscripts and stuff.

Re-enactment is technically larp. The meaning and definition of Larp covers a massive amount of activities. (Larp doesn’t have to be fantasy. In fact, larp is often not fantasy these days.) Airsoft is larp. Self is technically larp. If you wanna go deep into it, almost everything is larp.

Was into Larping before going into parkour hahaha. Like you said, some people go deeper into the geek side of things (role playing, magic, etc.) and others just want to fight and see it more like a sport. If you are the second type you slowly go from foam swords, to wooden sword, to blunt weapons as you slowly get desensitize to the danger and introduce to this world by others. I stopped at the wooden sword (learning I33 fencing, more for spectacles). Just with foam sword "the sport side of things" was really cool, as cool as paintball, airsoft and etc. and required more skills/stamina.

Hey friend! Ex community manager of the french fédération of Behourd and medieval oriented blacksmith here, just wanted to be a bit of a bitch about the word Béhourd, wich actually refers to the Hourds, wich are the big fat wood fencings that make the arena. Modern buhurt is an adaptation, kinda mixed between pas d'arme (aka duels between nobles in teams), jousting, things like that. From a historical point of view, keep in mind that people 500 years ago weren't any dumber than us. They didn't kill each other for fun, the same way mma fighters don't beat the shit out of each other for fun. It was, yes, a sport, a way of training for knights (trains having the balls to actually face someone who's gonna beat your ass with a sharp weapon), BUT, it was a political tool. If two noble houses couldn't settle their differences, if one owed money to an other for exemple, they would just send their champions and make the two houses settle their differences in a more manly way (lol). Now, deaths were relatively rare during these fights, but of course happened too much for the liking of the church. Keep in mind that armors for war and armors for jousting aren't AT ALL the same. One is for being mobile and conquering countries, the other was for taking heavy hits for 5 minutes and then resting. That means that using war armors wouldn't offer as much protection as people do today in buhurt with modern standards. Modern fighters wear modern kevlar and polymer protections under their armors, and modern armors are very thick. (there are so many rules regarding equipment, but for exemple a helmet forged with mild steel should be at least 3mm thick, wich is A LOT for steel). Oh btw, tempered steel and titanium don't offer the most protection. Yes, they will spring back and can be made even thinner beacause it's stronger than mild steel, but mild steel will deform under impact and absorb the energy of the blow without transferring it to the person underneath. So yes, it has to be repaired by the blacksmith after a few fights, but you won't suffer as much. Also, buhurt isn't "real medieval fights". It's jousting, it's sports. In an actual batttle, people would use way different techniques, mainly avoiding the protections (aka not flailing like an ape on the opponents armor). You would use dedicated anti armor weapons, with sharp points that would go in the few gaps you can reach. (just think about how buhurt players can take axe hits to the head and not die). Usually, armors used for buhurt aren't of very good quality. Let's say they are of munition grade, in the modern sense of the term regarding manufacturing processes (aka arc welding, using hot rolled sheets of steel), simply beacause you're not gonna spend 10k on an armor that's gonna get destroyed, 3k is plenty. So if you want to see historically accurate armors, don't look at buhurt too much. Their armors are big, heavy, bulky, sometimes crude. They look like big tin can men instead of finely armored soldiers. But whatever, you can't have maximum protection and not look like a bibendum

If you do ever get around to looking at LARPs, Dagorhir is one that I've played a good bit. Our big event Ragnarok shares the same field as the big SCA event. Cheap entry, only magic involved is healing which requires hand contact and reciting a poem of certain length. No headshots are allowed, but weapons are made to be swung as hard as you can swing them, not lightest touch. Great times, great people, great game.

I really like watching these fights, they really make me wonder how some knights and lords were in real life, especially very rich ones who could give their kids the best lessons (since childhood no doubt) and well made armor.

That never disappeared. The German & European Fechtschulens replaced the Buhurts. And they were more regulated and a lot safer. Also Buhurts were safer and more regulated than they are today and yes they use blunt weapons back then for tournaments. But the Fechtschulens were a upgrade. I see you have the dash on the cross there how edgy. Bet you would not do that to the Islamic Moon or Star of David big guy. Or maybe not edgy enough? Oh and every Fechtschulens beings with the Lord's Prayer... That's if you want to be historically accurate. Our group does that. 😎👉🏻👉🏻

If you really want to see some really good medieval festivals you'll have to go outside the UK. You have the festival at Libusin , there is also Wolin if you're into viking stuff , these are just two of the more well known ones. Here in Romania there are a lot of medieval festivals in different cities , but the biggest one is at Oradea. I'm fairly certain you'll find a lot of such festivals if you search for them. And you won't need tickets for them or anything of the sort. They are all public with no entrance fee. With some exceptions maybe
