That Finnish "Skier" at 7:35 is actually Spede Pasanen, a legendary comedian, film director, tv-personality and apparently an inventor. It's like Jerry Seinfield had a side hustle inventing motocross gear and finding that out makes me really happy!

It is interesting that urban skiing has become pretty big in Finland, you know Real Skifi and Forre already. It's such a small country. And the fact that the winch was invented here is pretty interesting too

Being a snowboarder, urban snowboarding is second nature to me. I haven't gone in a few years, because my job(NYC sanitation worker) makes me work in the snow. We are the ones that plow NYC. Only part of the job I hate, cause I'd rather be snowboarding. Lol. But from the mid 90s until about 6-7 years ago for me, my boys and me would go build our own obstacles in the city, anytime we got significant snow. Never once did I see a skier back then. Although freestyle skiing was definitely popular. Alot of the spots you showed I have seen MANY times in snowboard videos back in the day. Good for them taking it to the streets and being creative. I never had a problem with Skiers during that snowboarder vs skier beef days. I came from skiing and I love it. It's just back then snowboarding was the progressive choice, the one doing jumps and rails. Obviously as a preteen I generated towards snowboarding after 7 years on the skis. I still remember going to mountains with my dad and not being allowed to go in cause I was a snowboarder. Lol.

When I was in highschool we used to do Urban snowboarding in the summer (Ontario, Canada). We would go to the back of the local arena and fill a truck with the snow that the Zamboni dumped. We would bring the snow to a rail and set up runs of snow and small jumps. Once the snow melted, it was back to the arena to get more!
@aeyuio23152 жыл бұрын
When the winch came in the video and you started to talk about who might have been the first to do it, I was telling myself that god, it was even patented decades ago for winter sports in Finland. But then that same inventor came up in your video. He had the patent for it. It was called "Spede Linko" ("Spede Sling", after the inventor), and there is even a company still manufacturing it. And it was featured in a 1975 comedy movie in Finland, and it was permanently in use back then in some parks. The inventor was one of the most famous Finns of all time (in Finland), he's still a meme in Finland even 20 years after dying. And his films are still shown on the biggest TV channel here, every summer.

As a street snowboarder it's kinda frustrating to see how much harder it is for my urban skiier homies to get sponsored or even noticed by brands compared to park freeskiing even though they put in so much work. If the ski industry starts treating street the way that the snowboard or skate industries do we'd see some serious progress. Sick video, glad it touched on that topic.

I skied in backyards and parks building small jumps in the late 90s and early 00s. It’s natural kids did that, we didn’t always have access to our parents cars or enough money to hit the slopes frequently
@thorsvenson35302 жыл бұрын
I don't do any extreme sports, or really any sports whatsoever. I don't know how to ski and I can't skateboard. But I agree with the point that people doing this stuff should be able to make some money doing it and expand human curiosity and exploration. That to me is the epitome of human existence. Not just sport, but art and more importantly science. If not to explore and learn for the sake of exploring and learning, then what are we here to do??? We should go to the moon for the sake of going to the moon. We should backflip motorbikes for the sake of figuring out if that is even possible. We should explore life in a puddle and in the dessert and in the jungle and look for it on other planets. And on and on and on. Some kids jumping a ramp with skis is awesome. And I much rather people pursue these activities than violence, war, and hate.

true, he also forgot to mention the pioneer of freestyle skiing. (my boi candide thovex) who was actually inspired by snowboarders
@ddandymann2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the New Canadian Airforce, who are basically the founding fathers of freeskiing, cite snowboarding as their inspiration. They basically saw what the boarders were doing in the late 80's early 90's and just tried to find a way to do it on ski's. Other legends like Candide Thovex got into it in much the same way by just following boarders around the local hill and trying to copy their tricks.

Love the videos but gotta say, how did you not mention snowboarding here? All of the innovations you mentioned here: snow parks, going from parks to urban, using winches in urban... those are 100% things that snowboarders did and skiers followed suit. The entire modern freestyle ski sport basically is just doing snowboard things on skis. Even the Xgames ski events, each one of them was a snowboard event prior to ski.... I say this as a skier, you kinda mucked up the history there
