11:06 What I think you guys should realize is that Julius challenging Subaru to a duel wasn't him "hating" Subaru, per se, more like just being insulted by his words. Knights (and this applies to real life medieval times too as well as the King's Guard in Britain) typically went through very heavy and death defying training to become knights, and sometimes even *that* isn't enough to become a knight, as you could tell from the very minuscule group of knights in the throne room. Subaru self-proclaiming himself to be a knight was an insult none of the knights would take to their face, and Julius stepped up to defend their honor as being one.

Something mentioned on the light novel but not in the anime about this moment is that some of the knights were planning on killing subaru in an alley right after subaru left the royal palace, if not for Julius issuing the challenge that subaru accepted ( In the anime Julius kinda references this when starting the duel he said he was administrating a death penalty to subaru, but because he was emilias "knight" it was just basically a public beating, which was a way to protect subaru in a way)

If you notice Emilia didn't have an expression of anger at Subaru but more of pain and sadness. She didn't want to leave him but he kept getting injured and nearly killed as well as actually killed. She knew if he left her he wouldn't suffer anymore but Subaru being Subaru will always suffer

There's a lot involved about her thoughts in this part, she thought he was always hurt because of her, but at the same time she didn't want to leave him, it's no wonder she got depressed after returning to the mansion and always thought about him, anyway. Anyway, this was caused by his childish attitude, he should have stayed quiet waiting for her but he disobeyed and ended up embarrassing her for free, but looking at the general context, this was for the future development of both of them.

I'm not Subaru's biggest fan and punching him was the farthest thing from my mind, I pitied him. I have no idea the mental fortitude it takes to repeatedly experience death and come back as anything but a gibbering mess specially since the trauma isn't forgotten so how could I judge Subaru? Did I have second hand embarrassment sure but I felt sorry for Subaru particularly when all that he's experienced and pretty much the rest of what's been adapted to anime prove him right.

The royal selection isn't that clear, but the kingdom basically worships the dragon Volcanica, who is a military power for them as well as likely improving the land and telling them about disasters to avert through the tablet's prophecies. The tablet told them to find five candidates after the whole royal family died to a VERY local wave of a disease, and they have a three year period to prove themselves as good rulers (so making lands prosper and so on) before the ceremony to reforge the covenant with Volcanica and the new ruler he will pick. So of course one thing which this does imply is they'd still all need to be some sort of nobility. Felt was chosen by Reinhard which means she's now basically sponsored by the house of Astrea, Crusch is a duchess, Priscilla is a baroness, Anastasia is actually a powerful merchant from neighbouring Kararagi but Julius' house is obviously also sponsoring her effectively, and Emilia is sponsored by Roswaal who is a margrave with a lot of land power and influence. It's not an election because it's supposed to basically be Volcanica picking after three years, but the thing is even though he's basically a God to them the nobles won't all accept absolutely EVERYTHING he does. Which is why they decide to hear something about who the candidates are in the first place, they were getting riled up and questioning why they should pick a girl from the slums or a half elf as the king just because they need the covenant. They were pacified after Reinhard brought up to them that Felt looks suspiciously like the kidnapped princess who may have survived the wiping out of the royal family, and Roswaal first suggested they could just assume Emilia is a space filler and there's no chance of her winning anyway, before it turned into a threat against Subaru and Emilia defended him with Puck. Then Roswaal revealed that the show of power was actually their introduction and said they should REALLY accept Emilia's candidacy because she has a great spirit contracted to her who could have killed them all ages ago. This was the BOOK version of course!

A lot of people don’t seem to realize that Subaru isn’t being genuine in regards to what he’s saying here but the frustration of not being able to properly explain himself, and another reason that kinda gets into Spoiler territory. from Emelia’s perspective they’re interactions have been pretty limited, but when you get down to it, Subaru has every reason to appreciate her as much as he has.But the complications arise, when most of the interactions that led to this appreciation happened in timelines that no longer exist. Long story short, he’s hurting and blurted out whatever came from his jumbled thoughts if he really was an egotistical loser with a hero complex I really don’t think he would’ve done everything he did up to this point.

Every time Subaru uses "comedy" to describe himself he always uses words that can be seen as him talking badly about himself. He in reality seems to have a very low opinion of himself. So I feel that here Subaru projects all his worth as a person into Emilia because she was the first person in that world to show him any kind of compassion. And I think that's why he seems to take any insult directed towards her as if it was an insult towards him. And this is probably what Emilia noticed too. Which is why she said that he wasn't doing anything for her. He was doing it for himself. And it's true, he was doing nothing but embarrassing Emilia beyond belief and making her look bad in front of everyone in what it was probably one of the most crucial moments of her entire life goal. She literally had to drag him like a child in front of the most important people in the entire kingdom because he kept calling himself "her knight" and being disrespectful with the actual (very well trained and well educated knights) that called him out for saying something so absurd in front of them and everyone else. I know it may look as if Julius was being an asshole for fighting someone way weaker than him but he really wasn't. For context: In that ceremony even talking without permission or out of order was considered a massive offense. Now imagine how everyone saw Subaru when he not only started interrupting and insulting people but also started to claim (in front of the entire army of actual royal knights) that he was "Emilia´s knight". Just claiming to be a knight without actually being one was enought for someone to be killed right there for such a major offense, so think what would happen to someone who says that in front of the most important people of the kingdom and the entire army of royal knights. Emilia was already not well received into the royal selection just for being a half elf and her resemblance to the witch of envy. Subaru being there was legimitimately making it worse and massively ruining any chances she had in the royal selection. So, in order to avoid Subaru from being tortured and killed in the most gruesome way possible by the other royal knights and to be compasionate towards Emilia and leave her with at least a bit of honor and a small chance of still being considered seriously for the selection (with her not even the candidate he was supporting), he decided to take Subaru away from there and give him a huge beat up and humilliation to literally save his life. Don´t get me wrong, he doesn´t like Subaru at all, but as a knight, he decided to help such an ignorant person to survive getting killed by an entire army. Under normal circumstances duels are with real swords but he even reduced himself to use a wooden sword just to avoid accidentally killing him because he REALLY needed to beat him up for the other royal knights to be okay with the punishment he got for so many major offenses.

The author actually added a few details for this episode. Some extra background, The clothes of Felt is chosen by Reinhard because he has "blessing of clothing" (able to choose the most suitable clothes to a person) Reinhard can defeat Al in 2 seconds, and Subaru in 1 second. With regard to the political views of the candidates, it is too long if nothing changes from the novel. Nagatsuki wanted to cut. Finally, it remains only one sentence for each candidate. When Subaru introduces himself, he makes a gesture. It is from old Japanese. Only people with superior strength and family background can become Guard Knights. Julius says "Weakness is something to feel shame, not pride." and Nagatsuki likes it. Nagatsuki hopes that audiences can pay attention to the facial expression of Subaru in this episode. He thinks that everyone can have fun from it. (!!!!???) Old man Rom tries to save Felt by using tunnel under the castle. Why he knows it? It can be found in Re:Zero Side Story Ex2....... After the battle, Subaru is treated by Felix immediately, and also the teeth grows out again! Nagatsuki points out that the last five minutes of the episode was the most important part while selecting the VA. He thinks that everyone can understand why the two VA are chosen. Julius's birthday is 7 July. The birth flower is Nymphaea tetragona and it means pure heart. Nagatsuki hopes everyone can like him. Also, Subaru's birthday is 1 Apirl. This is the most cringe episode I've seen in an anime, and by cringe I mean horrifyingly relatable. It was so hard to watch, but it's remained my favorite episode because of it. I applaud the writers for putting real consequences for our hero... In the end, as shameful as it was....I still can't blame him. He's not only a teenager, but a modern one...one that is incrediblly immature next to teenagers from this kind of setting....and honestly everything he went through...how he didnt break down earlier like this, is a testament to his potential. Real hard and true life lesson. Difficult and I felt serious second hand embarrassment from watching but wow was this refreshing to actually have shown in a medium. Very bold direction. 10/10

The absolute worst but also one of the best episodes. Subaru puts all of his worst traits on full display, he is impulsive, disrespectful, arrogant and selfish. It strongly contrasts the more 'idealized' Subaru we know from past episodes, showcasing how much of an emotional person he is. Everything before I would consider to be the prologue, however now that we've both seen what Subaru is and what he can be, and with the Royal Selection now officially beginning, we finally get to see a more overarching direction this anime is taking.

Basically the dragon here refers to the dragon in the story who fought against the witch of envy. They made a pact with the royal family to protect their kingdom. So basically it acts as a nuclear deterrent to prevent other nations from attacking the country. Since the royal family got wiped out by a mysterious illness, the country wants someone new to make a contract with the dragon. The five candidates are those shortlisted by the dragon. Now it will be for the country to choose the best option. As for the equality part of Emilia's pledge, the country faced a massive civil war a few decades ago, and the scars are still there. First episode itself showed that there are still racial tension between humans and demi humans. Lots of people in power in council have been shaped by the demi human war, so I expect a certain amount of bias against Emilia even disregarding the fact that she fits the description of the boogeyman story you tell the kids.

Late comment as I hate the 12-13 episode combo and he reason why I skim thru the reactions of these 2 episodes is not because I don`t like them or outright hate Subaru, but because I feel bad for him. Especially because even most of the viewers see him as bad and don`t try to understand him even tho they know his story. I just expect every reactor to say Subaru is stupid/egotistical [and he is but who doesn`t have ego and desires? ] people are forgetting he died many times and even if no one asked for it it`s normal of him to expect a bit in return, he was fine with just living with them too not even being with Emilia as something more. Subaru desire to help is genuine, but because no one remembers all the pain he went thru, it ends up him having expectations that can`t happen since the rest don`t remember but that doesn`t erase his pain. It is egotistical but you can see the logic too, he died for her so many times, of course he would want to be her prince. He is just every day 16 y.o too. Yes this is the most "nice guy" thing he had done but it isn`t because he wants anything more then to be around the rest. The situation is so complex because he had died so many times and can`t tell but desperately wants people to acknowledge the pain he went thru for them. Also many people are too used to op isekai characters and in general realistic characters putt them off since they see themselves reflected on screen even if they say they would be better, the Shinji get in the robot meme is a meme for the same reason. The funny thing is that actually all the times he saved and will sav epeople from dying shows that in a way they can`t function without him

Subaru definitely is acting very poorly. But I don't remember if Emilia ever explains why she doesn't want him to come before hand. Also, she could have invited him and preempted him with what to expect and what she expects out of him. While I don't agree with Subaru's behavior, she also wasn't transparent and wasn't trusting. She had no faith that Subaru could come with her and everything would be fine. This is all based on memory from when I watched this show years ago and from these reaction vids. So, I may be missing some crucial info. Also, for fans that really dump on him for this arc, the dude has died so many times for everyone else's sake. He could have walked off and had a peaceful life. He gets to be a little selfish.

First of all, I don't understand English, so I'm sorry if my English is weird. I also liked RE:ZERO and watched it. Episode 13 of RE:ZERO Season 1 is the scene where Subaru and Emilia have a falling out. From now on, hell begins for Subaru and those around him. However, episode 18 is said to be the best episode. Let's be honest, if Subaru were mature, Emilia would die in the first episode. No one in their right mind would kill themselves so much and pay so much attention to someone on the street. But he's 15 years old and it's his first love. There's no way he acts like someone 20-22 years old It would be very hypocritical to say that a person, even knowing that they could die and come back, would spend so much of their life following someone. Subaru does screw up and acts in a non-rational way, but in fact, if he didn't help Emilia, she would die and Rem would be dead and that's a fact. But that's why it's not logical to help Emilia, even if he saves her once, it doesn't mean that she will reciprocate equally nor that you will be considered, Subaro is new and has no knowledge, he can't help Emilia .

In 1 way, Subaru may be more a knight than the "real knights"... at least he doesn't allow this trashtalk to a lady (Emilia)... but all the other knights said nothing. That Emilia's competitors trashtalk her is one thing.... but that the official judge says she is a filthy woman --> Go tell the Subaru :D and go tell the other knights that they are industrial knights.

It's not very knight like to embarrass your candidate for the royal throne by shamelessly declaring yourself as her knight in front of the actual REAL fleshed out knights, all of the stuff he did this episode didn't deserve any credit, he was being an asshat because he was afraid of losing Emilia, so much so that he almost gets himself killed by the Imperial Army, so Julius decided to save him by pretending to declare his death penalty but in reality, to beat some sense into him, Julius was the real knight in this situation, he saved an ignorant kid like Subaru

@@megarayquaza9054 Subaru was wrong in a lot of things this episode, but coincidentally, everything he said about the knights was correct. Julius states in the light novel, that only those born in noble households can be knights, and that low-class peasants like Subaru and Al will never be deserving of the title, so Subaru was completely right in saying that they are born with a silver spoon and they got there thanks to their daddy's name. Julius didn't save him, it was just a coincidence he alleviated the other knights anger. Hell, if anything, he was taking out his frustrations on him because Subaru is weak and can't fight back, and if you know his backstory this is most definitely the case.

@@megarayquaza9054 Yeah, I agree with most of that. It's just to point at, that the real Knights did nothing to prevent a lady to be harrased by the judges. So why not pointing that in public. The wrong doing was to "Save" or "Help" Emilia... where she didn't wanted to be "Saved". Subaru could have just pointed that it was not very Knightly to let this harrass be there... not for the sake of Emilia, but for the sake of the idea.

You understand his behavior? :))) He just latched onto Emilia in the creepiest of ways, believing himself to be this necessary hero of her life ....some of the worst people are those who are arrogant and entitled enough to keep interfering with another's life claiming they are doing it all for the other's sake and they should even be appreciated for it. Oh lord... (eye roll) Just as a conclusion: if you even feel like you need praise and appreciation for what you're doing, for your choices and actions, you are not pure within your choice, you have a selfish reason behind it.

He latched onto Emilia because she was the only person to help him in the world he was thrown in, and if you consider his backstory, then it makes perfect sense he would develop a dependency on her. About the things he said, they were 100% correct. He literally is a hero, and if you consider what he did episode's past with literally killing himself to save his murderer, then he's literally a saint. Only thing wrong here was him making a fool of himself in front of the council and exploding in anger towards Emilia at the end.

You know, it is quite funny to me that people don't seem to have considered that Emilia keeps being in danger BECAUSE of Subaru. While being in his hero syndrome, it is so easy to have tunnel vision, and while struggling to help her constant impending danger, he wouldn't realize that the commonality to all the disaster is HIMSELF. What if by trying to latch on to this helping, he's always bringing the misfortune? (Don't spoil me, I haven't seen the whole show) . As for the understanding, you are correct. Yet, I'm not talking about him doing the right or wrong things, even within a disfunctional way of perceiving the situation, his sequence of choices for the past episode and a half are a clusterfuck. :))) I can understand a few of them, but one leading to the other makes no fucking sense.... he breaks the promise to Emilia, he comes to the place where she asked him not to come WITH the competition, he just finds himself judging a room full of important peoole in a world he clearly knows nothing of, he keeps talking after asked by Emilia to shut up, he makes a mockery out of tge whole thing like acting as a buffoon, he proclaims himself to be a Knight while knowing nothing about what that means, he gets in a stupid fight, he uses magic which he also promised not to do aaaaaand, to top ot off, he blames Emilia for not appreciating everything he's done. :)))) Are you shitting me? Did I miss anything? And people keep talking about how he cannot explain his Return to Death..... that would NOT explain all the shit he's done. Like, for how much he says he cares about Emilia, you would have thought that at ANY one moment within the ones listed above he would have noticed just how bothered Emilia is and choose differently. That's why his behavior makes no sense (regardless of right or wrong): he claims to do all this for Emilia, yet while visibly bothered, he continus to do the things that bother her (without it being about saving her life these last 2 ep).
