Just to be completely clear... I don't have a problem with self driving trucks. They're hypothetically going to make the job easier for truck drivers and we will still need drivers in the cab operating the machinery. HOWEVER... you can't deny that the mass implementation of self-driving trucks won't have a dramatic effect on the trucking industry. It's going to make the labor of a truck driver less specialized (similar to factory workers), increase government oversight, and introduce more competition driving wages down. This is why I think this move will push drivers out that don't specialize or up-skill. If you disagree, that's fine. I'm more than happy to debate in the comments!

@@Gill22 Think about it, it is much easier to automate driver managers, dispatchers etc than to automate running the truck itself. Loads can be entered into an automated system after which an optimized route can be calculated the same as navigation systems do now. The system can know what trucks it has and where they are relative to the loads and route them accordingly.

Completely disagree with this. I am not a driver but rather someone who builds software for the trucking industry. I do not believe autonomous vehicles will be adopted on a mass scale not even in the next 20 years. Here’s why: 1. The technology to train truckers (especially OTR) will take too long to complete. With vehicles (cars) the data required to train cars to self drive in the streets took about 10 years to collect and they put computers with LiDAR on cars that would record a humans reactions and then train cars based on that. However they took millions of inputs and had thousands of cars driving around in the streets. At one point, California had 13 tech companies with cars on the streets. Tesla started in 2003. Look how long it took them to make it. Even today, not everyone has a Tesla. 2. Why doesn’t everyone have a Tesla? Cost, the current cost of a autonomous truck is about $500k, twice the cost of a regular semi. Also the infrastructure of not having enough charging stations is another reason we all don’t have Tesla. This applies to truck in simple bcuz the country does not have the infrastructure to support trucking (charging stations, batteries don’t last long enough, yards/docks are not set up, weight stations etc). It would take a huge overhaul by the government and private entities and trucking companies to come together and build infrastructure to support trucking. 3. We have the federal government and state governments. Unless there is a federal law that states cannot contest, must of the movement will be spent in courts. Until the courts are settle…and there is a federal law….some state will allow autonomous trucks and some will not. There are a million other reasons but don’t be fooled by all the hype. I think we’d be lucky to see a fully autonomous trucking industry if it happens in the next 30 years.

I feel pretty sure that career will be impacted (it is already being heavily impacted) before autonomous trucking will affect trucking on the broad scale. I still think a platform on the rail, where you drive the whole unit on the platform and the driver goes up to the Club Car to relax, sleep and catch up on things would be a better way to go, kind of like a Super Intermodal service. This basically accomplishes the same thing without overwhelming capital expenditures of fleet conversion in addition to less wear and tear on the unit. Zero liability compared to putting a truck into publicly trafficked roads.. Driverless trucks are going to have bugs that need to be worked out for years to come.

Self driving trucks will always have a professional driver in the cab. This video is a hoax. Self driving technology will make the professional drivers job easier. Self driving technology cannot drive a truck without a professional driver in the cab in snow or ice or heavy rain or on steep or mountainous terrain. How would a Self driving truck put chains on a truck on I-70 during winter time? Or how would a Self driving truck navigate I-40 in north Carolinas steep and curvy roadways? How would a Self driving truck put fuel and park at a truck stop or a shipper or receiver? As you can see Self driving trucks without a professional driver is a hoax. This idea is being peddled as a way to keep professional drivers pay low. I have already said that Self driving technology would help make the professional drivers job easier but there is one problem. There may be an attempt to raise the hours of service again. Remember when the maximum hours of service was ten then the last day in office Bush #2 changed the hours to eleven. We don't need additional time driving during a shift. That will be the push as the Self driving technology is put on more semi trucks. This video as it was presented is a complete hoax.

I presented real events backed by reputable articles and formed my own opinion based on my experience in this industry. If you disagree, that's fine.... but you literally just proved my point. Do you think drivers are going to get higher wages and better working conditions even if they're sitting in the cab of a truck that mostly drives itself? Or do you think the job will become less specialized like factory workers and wages will reduce by introducing more competition?
@ronnieterry4916
@ronnieterry4916 16 күн бұрын
@Gill22 I said that too that this new technology will keep driver pay low and another thing I will predict that there will be another push to raise the hours of service. This technology would make the professional drivers job easier but if hours of service are increased that would be a negative and the other negative would be driver pay will not be increased. Then in the end the professional driver will continue to be paid less than minimum wage when the total hours worded is divided by the total take home pay. Another gimmick that some trucking used was what the companies called per diem pay. They withheld three percent of a drivers pay then gave the driver back Teo percent of what they were calling perdeim pay . But in the end the company kept one percent of this and called it administrative cost. Anyone who knows anything about per diem pay is money that the employer pays the worker for meals and lodging when the worker is away from the home unit. That two percent the company gave the driver back of their own money no tax was paid on that money. My point being some trucking companies have a lot of gimmicks. The fake per diem was just one of many.

The fear that everyone will experience when they don't see a driver in a truck, which will complicate traffic. Now if there were designated truck lanes for these self driving trucks, maybe. Trucking is going through a turning event. Too much expensive, over-leveraged deadwood needs to be excised from the industry. This deleveraging will cause many carriers and independents out of the business. Likely this purge will over correct as it often does and we will be short everything when the economy picks up again. IMHO, if your financial stable and don't have a butt ton of overhead- now would be a good time to enter trucking and be positioned in the upswing.

It seems like for now box trucks should be fine as they’re primarily used for last mile deliveries. They’re going to run these self driving trucks on long haul routes first before expanding.

How would a truck recharge itself? How would an electric truck pulling a load up deep hills? .how would an Electric truck put Chain ⛓️. Onto the wheels when it's snow? . There are more then you think. Think about that. Who would be responsible for death when there is a crash ? Think about these things before saying things

Self driving vehicles in general don't do well in high incline wich are mountains, winding roads and steep hills the self charge uses more charge on the wear and tear wich takes that charge time less efficient than what's predicted and tested. An which state has all these factors California .Yay, thanks California they also go green, but on the back end most polluted state aside emissions . Just look when you drive in the state trash everywhere. No road maintenance on a comtinual basis. Wonder why?🤔

Here comes a failure to "UNDERSTAND" Yes it's going to suck for a bet. All this self operating machines job will FALL. How are we going to buy said products and services because those jobs are being done by the machine? Now where do you get the money for upgrades and maintenance. Maybe the government. Nope we don't have job means no taxes or 4o1ks to take to pail out company's. So your going to use millions of dollars to lose trillions dollars. What business school did those guy go to.

You're over blowing a situation just a little bit. If you think about it hopefully the government is in dumb enough to do that. Because having fully driverless trucks is insane. Just like in the airplane business. Planes have been able to fly themselves for years from taking off to the landing. But the FAA is not going to have a pilotless plane due to the fact that any type of malfunction could happen during the trip and the pilot has to take over. Let's say a solar flare comes in a em pulse hits the plane and knocks out all of the instruments, it's up to the pilot to get the plane back in operation before disaster happens

I see what you mean brother but the truck driver shortage is just a symptom of a larger problem. Truckers are getting paid enough for the hours and work they put in so they don't stick around. Also, young people aren't attracted to this field so they're struggling to get new people in as the older truckers retire.

Well of course they want this, it is cheaper, but its not gonna work, and I just bet its gonna take some pedestrian injuries/casualties to get companies to back off this crazy idea. Its not gonna happen, there are too many variables on the road, especially in traffic. Its a similar story with electric trucks; its not gonna work for several practical reasons including battery weight and current highway conditions.

With proper sensors and programming it will do better job than any trucker. It won't get tired, bored, sick etc. It will follow speed limits, always alert which will actually result in less accidents. Technology may not be there yet, but it will happen and it is not too far in the future.

@sp4604 To be fair, those were all in the testing phase. Once it's all buttoned up it will be safer. Can accidents still happen? Sure. But they will be significantly lower than the amount of accidents from human error or fatigue.
