Both the spike hitbox and volleyball hit boxes hit at the same time, the resulting knockback created a weird angle, thus why WFT went down and right instead of just down or right.

Simple Newton's laws. The momentum changes are added considering the vectors implied. A vertical downwards force added with a horizontal outwards force equals a diagonal force in bot downward and outward direction. In other words, when a semispike, and a hit with normal angle, somehow connects at the same time, the opponent will be launched downwards and in the same direction of the hit with normal angle (in this case outwards).
