The Finnish voters don't care about juries anymore, they want to have fun and send something they enjoy that reflects what Finnish people are like. This reflects a lot of the sentiment Finns have about ESC right now so it was the perfect time for it to hit just right! It was incredible to watch the sudden switch from last place to an overwhelming first because the audience did NOT care about what the juries wanted at all!

I just found that comment under another video and I think it helps a lot to understand the wonderful craziness which you just witnessed. 😄 "This song is an anthem for being who you are 🎉🎊 Love the message and also how it combines the Finnish Kalevala where the world is created from the eagles’ egg, In the stage performance the singer Henri represents the eagle (see the similarity of the movements and the clothing) and the Windows95man is born (as all humans) naked only wearing Kalevala inspired boots. The stage coordinator tries in the middle of the song give the rules to our hero but he puts the instructions flying in the air. He wants to be free and who he is despite what the others try him to be!" Have fun with it 😊

As a Finn here's my perspective: Sara Siipola was a favorite just based on the music video and song, and people expected her to win. But there was no "Käärijä effect" this year, where one song stood out drastically. The staging for the other songs was a let down, and Windows95 had the best stage show. Sara's live vocals were lackluster, so voters went with the crazy and funny option with a memorable stage show. At least we'll catch the public's eye with the show 🤣
@ellem899010 ай бұрын
This is 100% what happened. After seeing the rehearsal in person me and my mom knew this would most likely win and it wasn't either of our favourite song before the show at all. The impact on stage was just that big and the shorts appearing in person looked even funnier/better.
@jijitters10 ай бұрын
100% agree with everything you said and I think the other piece of it is that Finnish voters don't care about juries and want to send something Finnish people like rather than worrying what will impress the ESC jury. It's the same message as No Rules itself. In my opinion, it felt like everything just came together for that to be exactly what Finland wanted at this time.

There are a lot of people in Finland that are not happy that this song won (over Sara Siipola's Paskana). Personally, this was exactly the type of music I listened to in the 90's, so can't be mad. As you wondered why he is called Windows95man and what it has to do with this song: He is a visual artist and a DJ who loves the 90’s and always plays 90’s music on his gigs. In 2013, he had a gig at the Flow festival in Helsinki and as he was looking for a stage outfit he came across a Windows 95 t-shirt, went and bought it and the rest is history. Windows95man has been his stage name as a DJ and he’s been wearing the same outfit (those skimpy denim shorts and a Windows t-shirt) for a decade, so the character was not invented just for the UMK and Eurovision. The character and the name basically have nothing to do with this song, other than the fact that ”No rules” has always been his motto as he wants to do things his own way rather than follow the latest trends. The vocalist is Henri Piispanen, a singer and voice actor best known for his role as Chase in the Finnish version of the Paw Patrol.

Eurovision, at its best, is freedom of expression and celebration of cultures. This act is the former and as such, I think, a huge middle finger to autocratic regimes. Think about what Russia stands for -- lack of freedom and rights including minority rights, suppression, the destruction of European cultures... ESC and the "No Rules" entry represents everything that Russia is not. I don't think that the 1990s reference is a coincidence either. That was a time of freedom in Eastern Europe and plenty of people feel nostalgic about it.

On the surface this seems like just another chaotic funny-song on stage on first watch, but the staging actually has so many clever details (easter eggs 😄) and everything is quite well planned. Windows95man is just artist name he has had for a long time and has nothing to do with the song really. And his "brand" is kind of that shirt and jeans (which is why everything is covered in denim). And the song has important message too, "do not care about what others say about you and do what you want to do". That egg could refer to the birth of the world in Finnish mythology and he is born from it in the beginning. Which is why he doesn't have pants at first and then gets them on later. We had shirtless men for two years in row so why not pantless one too. The ropes that bring down the pants are eagle-shaped (there are eagle sounds in the song). Also the dancers/the one audience person are intentionally blocking the view to his legs untill he gets the pants, and that really requires precise camera work. And the "no rules" does not really refer to being pantless, but instead to when he talks to that "director" person and throws away the papers and then starts playing with the pyros when he gets his pants. For me the song is good and very catchy (and one of the best songs chosen for Eurovision so far this year), but its one of those songs that some people are just going to hate 🤣. I voted for Sara Siipola -Paskana, but she did not sing very well live so i can see why this won instead of it. This is not really Käärijä copy, its more of a big middle finger to Sweden and juries from Finland 😎.
