I only found out now! Wild Bill, gone, but not forgotten. I feel a Friedkin binge coming on. I watched The French Connection not too long ago, but I think I'll dig out Sorcerer and Killer Joe and watch them in his honour. Rest in peace Wild Bill!

He lived a good life and he left us right before the Exorcist remake came out. "Ed, the guy who made those new Halloween sequels is about to make one to my movie, the Exorcist. That's right, my signature film is about to be extended by the man who made Pineapple Express. I don't want to be around when that happens. But if there's a spirit world, and I can come back, I plan to possess David Gordon Green and make his life a living hell."

@@davidlean1060 I've yet to see Cruising. My nephew who really really knows films told me is a must see. Problem is finding a copy & a dvd player. I can work it out, pretty sure. ~ Is Killer Joe worthwhile?
@davidlean10605 ай бұрын
@@billjones8503I love it. It's a pitch black comedic farce, so it might not grab you at first, but I find it hilarious! Cruising is probably on youtube movies. It's not too hard to get a copy. Is it worth while? Maybe. I'm not taken with it the way I am with Billy's other films, but it was a maverick film for the time, so for that reason alone, watch it.

I love how he can sound both sophisticated and 'street' because of his Chicago accent. I have no ear for how strong it is, or whether Billy has lost a lot of it over the years, but the way he says certain words, I think to myself, 'yeah, that guy has seen some serious s**t in his day!'.

He's right. There's no catharsis anymore. Art itself was the risk, and if humanity can't displace, it will thus engulf itself. You can't contain this process. That's why commerce flourished because art provided this "safe space," granting the freedom to help people stay connected to this accepted psychodynamic reality. The suspension of disbelief. This medium had been destroyed through the delusion of what humanity "should" and ought to be. Denial isn't a river in Egypt.

To live and Die in LA does not get the credit it deserves (historically). I would argue that the car chase is even better than the French Connection. DaFoe was a great bad guy. What I like about all of Friedkin’s classic movies is the realism. Today’s action movies, thrillers etc., feel the need to be over the top. I don’t like that. The audience connects with a movie and it’s characters when they believe it’s real.

I found out about Sorcerer because of Tangarine Dream's soundtrack, which I purchased in 78. I had seen Clozot's version in 68 on tv and loved it and I got to see Friedkin's Sorcerer on cable in 81 or 82. I had to see this movie more than once over the next decade to really appreciate how good it is, I prefer it over the original but not by much.

The interviewer is enthusiastic and thorough but needs to calm down a little. I’ve listened to a number of other interviews on KZbin with Friedkin talking about The French Connection. So I already knew how he had to be mean to Hackman in order to motivate him to capture the essence of Popeye Doyle. What never gets mentioned is that Doyle in the movie says the word n*gger once and only once. And that comes after his partner Russo (Roy Scheider) is patched up after being slashed with a knife in the arm by the drug dealer they had to chase after he ran out of the bar. The French Connection is one of the best movies of any genre ever made.
