Having the advantage of age and a huge Lotus fan and owner it was an easy call for me to pick Red Bull and Max Verstappen. Adrian Newey's College thesis was on Ground Effect cars. He, Gordon Murray, John Barnard etc all were Disciples of Colin Chapman.

20:26 he won driver of the day multiple times, was as quick as Hamilton for some parts of the Baku race, had multiple epic comeback drives, led a lap at the US GP and would've been top 5 or 6 if AM hadn't messed his pitstop up at that race. Counts in my book

Wrong. George won his first race also but it's not a surprise based on the car he's in. But has more merit than Carlos since Merc was worse than Ferrari. A surprise at the most could've been someone like Lando or Yuki, one not expected to win due to car or experience.

Nahh Ocon and Ricciardo in 2021 and Gasly 2020 were surprise winners warranting an A* if someone had predicted that Ferrari is consistently a top-3 team Naming one of their drivers as a winner isn't really a crazy thing to do I'd say A- Maybe even a B

I agree that Carlos winning is not an A* Even ignoring that it wasn't a surprise at the time, he's not the most surprising winner we could have had even pre-season, so I don't feel like that entirely fits A* material. An A* would be if an Aston Martin, Mcclarren, or Alpine had won a race (and that was guessed.)

the biggest surprise of car design I think nobody woulda thunk was Aston Martin and the rear wing loophole, but the stinker is that it really had no impact on their season haha runner up Merc's sidepod-less car, and honorable mention for George Russel winning a race none of my predictions of WDC panned out

Not even one of you predicted Max to be a champion again. Which is kinda strange because even in pre-season, and with the whole not-enough-development-time narrative, Red Bull was still widely considered a well-oiled machine with the best car designer on the grid and an elite star driver in their seat.

The thing about Mick, he needs a second season of the same formula to be in the best position to compete. Throwing him into 2021 in a Haas is dooming him to fail, because A it’s a Haas and B it was the last year of that formula. He will be back and he’ll prove he’s good. Not an all time great, but there is a good driver in Mick.

Friend of mine made a prediction sheet at the start of the year, and I ended up calling Haas' points total spot on, as well as how many times George would outqualify Lewis. Not bad for my first full season as an F1 fan. Keep up the great content, and here's to 2023!

The only silver lining the Mercs have is they got faster or got closer to the top team's paces AS THE SEASON PROGRESSED. Same with Aston Martin who looked like the slowest car in the grid at the first quarter of the season.

Two outliers of races (Mexico and Brazil) don't imply a pattern. Merc is still as far back as they started AD showed and with the new TD next year, probably even more.

@@EntropicExergy Singapore qualifying they looked completitive but just missed out Japan admittedly were very far off the pace USA Hamilton fought for the win Mexico they showed good consistent pace throughout apart from the final stint Brazil they fought for the win and eventually won Abu Dhabi they were far off 4/6 final races they fought for the win and they had consistent podiums after the summer break (zandvoort, spa, usa, México, Brazil)

@@thomasmoseley9749 Except RB messed up Max' quali as a team by underfueling him. Had they done it properly Max would have had pole and just driven off, denying any chance merc would have. In Texas lulu only stood a chance because of several safety cars and RB botching up Max' stop big time. Had these not happened i would have seen Max drive away at least half a minute to a minute. And as i said before Maxico and Brazil were outliers that shouldn't be considered to say anything about pace. Merc is still as far back as they were at the start, a fundamentally flawed concept cannot be fixed. Mark my words, RB will be driving away from merc easily next season, for multiple obvious reasons.

I was always thrown by the introduction of the E grade... in my school we only had A, B, C, D and F. D was the minimum passing grade and anything below annotated an F. We used to joke you got an E for effort but I don't think that was actually handed out to anyone.

The craziest...or most suspicious...prediction I've ever heard was By Bernie Ecclestone in March 2009, right before testing when It was officially announced that Ross Brawn bought Honda and renamed it Brawn. He said, "This is Jenson Button's best chance to become World Champion." People laughed and figured he was either joking or going senile.

Lets not give Ferrari too much credit Matt, Max won by 145 points!!! You would need Charles to have won six more races while Max DNF those same races to give him a chance to win the championship. There isn't enough bumbling by Ferrari to make that up. Maybe at the first half of the season, but the 2nd Half was pretty much Red Bull/Max domination w/ Ferrari falling behind in overall performance. In fact, even if you have Charles win those last 6 races & Max finish 2nd, Max would have still won by 80 points! You are likely looking at Charles chances w/ rosy tinted glasses from the start of the season if you think Ferrari fixing all their mistakes (& assuming Red Bull didn't) that they would be within a couple of races. Nowhere near that close.

OK Matt, On Sainz. Yes, you called it. Surprise? I get Tom's point so for me it looks like this - For a top prediction I think the value of the bigger reach deserves a better grade. So if grading on a curve with Tom and Katy it's a B+ because it wasn't much of a reach. They both bet large. Katy, I think you are spot on with part of your prediction. Lewis WILL absolutely retire with an 8th title, firmly believe that. On the last question, you all get an "F" since it wasn't even a question of George beating Lewis.

Honestly, the crashes aside looking at the driver standings where would you have expected Mick to be? Doubt its any higher that what he actually ended on, beat the williams, beat zhou that had a decent alfa romeo and tied with tsunoda and only 6 points behind stroll. He lost the most points at the start of the season when the car was actually somewhat competitive but he wasnt ready yet. If Mick doesnt deserve another chance, than idk what to say.

Some of my prediction before testing: - George will beat Lewis in the standings, because he will get used to the car quicker. Lewis will claw back in the end, but will finally come short. Also George will score a win, but Lewis won't. He'll come close to a win, but he will sadly lose his record of scoring a win every season. (Cruel but almost spot on!) - Gasly and Alpha Tauri will have a stinker of a season (I'd say spot on) - 6 way title fight (Couldn't have been further off)

Grading my own predictions, like the narcissist I am; Biggest Surprise - George Russell will be toe to toe with Hamilton for the whole season. A* - I'll take the win for both it being correct and something very few predicted. By far my best one! Biggest Let Down - Ferrari won't make any real gains to Mercedes and Red Bull. E - They without doubt did make gains, but I think the fact that there was still so much missed potential stops this from being an F. Who Will Be Dropped - Nobody, but Mazepin will get a race ban and Piastri will replace him for that race, as well as multiple FP1 sessions. F - although I suppose technically Mazepin did get replaced for multiple FP1 sessions - i.e. all of them? Surprise Winner - Norris will get a win, but Ricciardo will be much better and finish ahead of Norris come the end of the season. F - enough said. World Champion - Verstappen. Hamilton and Mercedes heads' will still be down after Abu Dhabi, and whilst this won't last long at all, it will be enough to give Max the edge. A - it would have been an easy A* if I didn't go into too much detail! Bold prediction - The rule changes will generally bring the pack closer together, but the constructors' championship order will stay exactly the same as in 2021. D - the midfield I would argue were more closely bunched up, especially if you look at the difference between 4th and 10th in the Constructors' between the two years. But safe to say it wasn't in anything like the same order!

4:03 yeah sorry beating your experienced team mate when it is your first time being close to any other f1 car and battling them is dissappointing. Like ok he crashed, but he would have had his first point on the season opener had ocon not hit him, giving him damage and a time loss exactly equal to his gap to zhou at the end of the race. If people consider kmag's season to be a 10/20, mick is definitely at 11 or 12 if you take all of it into account and not just his crashes. Everybody seems to have forgotten that he litteraly outdrove hamilton in inferior machinery, his potential points in canada fucked by reliability, then zandvoort got to q3 when kmag dropped out in q1 only to have his team fuck his race up with 15 sec stops. Same song with the upgraded package, they gave it to kmag in hungary, mick got it in Spa. Mick proceeded to immediatly beat kmag in spa's qualy by going into q2 while kmag was out in q1, then zandvoort as i said earlier massively outqualified kmag. Then comes monza, sits fp1 out, cannot drive in fp2 because of water pump leak or whatnot which happens again in fp3. He basically doesn't drive all weekend and manages to slot in just 1 tenth short of magnussen in quali who had all the sessions to prepare. Anyways, have a nice day.
