this would be awful and a dick move to the drivers in the top teams as quail in Monaco is the most extreme event of the entire calendar with the extremely tight corners and a small margin for error, getting pole in Monaco is simply the hardest of all Qualis of all the races so imagine accomplishing that to start at the back of the grid :/

@@EvO24 I think if they are able to get 15 races at least then it'll be fine. I'm personally excited for a shorter season where mistakes are punished extremely hard. Of course, it could lead to a new champion (Maybe Max or Charles?) but either way I believe they'll have deserved it for sure. With only 15 races, a single DNF could likely cost the championship, and obviously Lewis will be on his game, so to beat him you'd have to be near perfect.

I think they mean that RedBull might challenge the Mercs hard at Hungary (unlike Silverstone, where the Mercs are the clear-cut favorites), which is true. If Gasly wasn't as bad last season as a wing man, leading to Lewis having that free pit stop, RedBull (Max) would've probably won at Hungary. Argument for qualifying, in football (most of the knockout tournaments) you have to go to two legs, and i see quali and race like 1st and 2nd leg in football, if you do well in 1st leg (quali) you were better so you deserve the advatage going to 2nd leg (race).

"you're giving Mercedes a huge advantage starting in pole position". Maybe because the drivers that get pole actually drove the fastest lap and because of that they got the pole. Wasn't formula 1 supposed to be the fastest drivers win? So why you're actually wanting to reward a team for being slow, that's just ridiculous to me.
@aadityasamant6207
@aadityasamant6207 4 жыл бұрын
Mate the drivers are fast, no doubt about that. The reason for the reverse grid proposal is that the machinery is completely unfair. The Mercedes is much better than the Williams, regardless of the drivers. Back in the day machinery was equal, so qualifying made sense but now - not so much. The reverse grid is an attempt to make the grid more fair in regards of machinery and to make racing more entertaining. As you said, the fastest drivers win. In today's grid you'll never know if Russel is faster than Hamilton because of the unequal machinery they're in.

Reverse Grids. It's 100% artificial. As for being "fair" to have the fastest teams at the front. Well, have the other teams earned their place? No. Is it "fair" that the fastest team wins the championship then? Why not just give it to Williams because they haven't had one for a while in that case? If I wanted artifice to create races, I would have stayed watching V8 Supercars.

It's like having a different points system -- we saw people trying to get fastest lap (and potentially risking their race) where before they wouldn't). I hope the FIA is able to confirm the final calendar in enough time so why don't have a situation where someone wins without fully knowing they've won!

thinking about it, maybe having championship based reverse grid all season long wont be that bad... first of all, being quick by yourself wont be enough, you will need to have overtaking skills. second, it might throw in some other season long strategies into the mix. maybe if the bigger teams will be placed regularly on the low points there wont be that much of a gap in the championship standings. maybe it will let talents (like Russell) show themselves in the less faster cars by having them around other cars and not in the back row. on the other hand, maybe giving a lot points to someone who by definition is bad (because they are last in the standings) isn't really all that appealing. lets try to imagine a season like this. lets say the first race will have qualifying, so the best teams are getting a lot of points. 2nd race, the order of the top 10 on the grid is decided by the 1st race qualifying (so whoever qualified 11th will get pole, then 12th gets 2nd and so on, making it important to qualify as high as you can even if you cant get to the top 10). so lets say the final results will look like this: 1-5 = the mid-field teams, got low points 1st race. 6-10 = the top teams 11-20 = mix of the bad teams. here is where the driver comes into play, a good driver can defend even if not in a merc. 3rd race onwards, i imagine the standings will have the 10 bad cars always down the chart, always starting on the front, and the top 10 mixed between the midfield and the top teams, when the leading drivers are those who can overtake at least 10-15 cars (because they are starting in the back all the time) and maybe teams with good strategists at the pit wall. we might need some other points system, not for championship, but to get the starting order of the teams that doesnt have any points. lets make it simple - 1st place get 19 pts, 20th gets 0. actually maybe it can determine the whole grid order, and not the championship standings, idk didnt give much thought to this one.

Second race of a doubleheader needs something but what are the alternatives? Ideally, an alternative layout would be great but not many tracks provide that, so maybe have different tyre compounds for the two races. Maybe remove one set of the faster compound for the championship leaders? Or a three-cars-per-grid-row approach. One thing about the doubleheader thing, the only two confirmed doubleheaders are at the start of the season so that won't necessarily shake up the fastest cars (if, shock horror, we get retirements). So there is more scope for unpredictability early in the season, I guess.

I think the one-team veto is sort of meant to be a protection for the minority party in a disagreement, like for when ground effect first popped up and so on. It's not really effective in that role, though, as the FIA just use safety grounds now or there's inter-team alliances to take things down, so it's been kept and repurposed as a one-team-blackmail-style-veto.

Something else to think about. The teams have to set things like gear ratios for the entire year. With no Monaco and other tight circuits, as well as lots more time to develop, and having races at Spa, Monza and Silverstone, you have to think the teams will develop the cars much more specifically. So maybe the typical “this track favors this team” can be thrown out the window. Food for thought.

This season will absolutely count as a full season and the championship should be valued as any other. I mean all teams and drivers are facing the same issues in the general situation of uncertainties and the differences in competitiveness between the teams shouldn't have changed much - if anything I think it will be tighter with more limitations on development that the big teams aren't used to as much. And historically speaking, Formula 1 seasons have had pretty few races in the first decades and who would say that those first champions didn't deserve their titles?

Interesting point made by Tommy, how will Mercedes (Lewis) react when they havent won any of the first 2-3 races? Look at lewis' track record when he was fighting for the championship against someone that wasn't his team mate. That was 2008 and in all fairness, Massa wasn't the greatest driver especially compared to a Leclerc and Verstappen. Dont count out Vettel as he has nothing to lose this year, Im expecting a lot of Multi 21 orders at Ferrari. So if Mercedes hasnt won any of the first few races and they dont know how long the season will be, Mercedes will have a hard time. (I still think they will win though ahahah)

2 issues with a reverse grid sprint race. Firstly it isnt a sprint race at all. Its basically just extending the race by half hr and splitting it over 2 days, with drivers able to make a mistake in the first half but not in the second half. Weird. But the biggest issue is it will always favour the driver in 6th. Such is the speed difference between the top 3 teams and the rest of the field. The driver in 6th will always make quicker headway. Weve seen time and time again 2 drivers near the back. Ones up in 5th or 6th by the first few laps, the second is 15th or something. Putting the championship leader at a constant disadvantage by putting them behind 5 equally fast cars including a team mate will just turn, what some people are already calling not a proper championship into yet more of a gimmick season, devaluing the champion. You only have to watch a Football Manager test save with the english leagues reversed to see how the team that gets through 'the field' first dominates leaving the rest far far behind. I think the season should be kept as close to a normal season as possible to protect the integrity. Far better use of this season would be to play around with structures already in place, after all lets face it a reverse grid at hungary or monaco would become a joke race. Maybe force the teams to use all 3 compounds of tyre in a race, or play around with the DRS and ERS systems only allowing 'hot lap's' at various points in the race similar to how cricket restrict fielding for certain overs to spice up the action

if reverse grid races were done based on qualifying, no one would set a qualifying lap.....unless the grid reversal is based on some other factor. But the top 2 teams would argue about the grid reversal criteria may not necessarily apply to them or "would be too biased on previous results and not really improve racing action"

An issue I have with reverse grid Qualifying is just seeing drivers under pressure performing their absolute best over one lap before we watch them drive slower in the race to save tyres. Wouldn't mind them trying it out a couple times though, just make it a non championship round

i feel like the reverse grid qualifying format would be perfect for the 2nd race at the same circuit. the qualifying grid for the 2nd race would be the reverse of the results of the 1st race. seems perfect to me :))

The calendar may favour Red Bull, however they’re going to be most affected by the new aero regulations (trimming of the barge boards and removal of air squirts) so I believe it’ll cancel out any advantage

They needed a unanimous decision from the teams because of how late the change (reverse grids) was proposed... it’s not fair for a team like Mercedes to force them to accept reverse grids when they’ve designed their car to run at the front in clean air (more downforce, more drag and less straight line speed) rather than running behind other cars in dirty air... and I’m sure any other team in Mercedes position (think of Red Bull 2010-2014 & Ferrari 2000-2005) would have rejected the idea too

The fastest team starts first cause they earned it. It's a team performance. The current qualifying promotes cars on track at all times trying to go as fast as possible. For once it actually works. Don't change it again.

Reverse grids solve nothing, the way to improve racing is through budget caps, changes to the bodywork and limiting the time the big teams can spend developing their aero; all of things are happening. How would a driver feel being in the slowest care but only getting their possible first win by being put in pole position out of pitty. There's no show of pure driving talent their.

surely where possible they can slightly alter the track layout atleast e.g. silverstone? I mean move a few barriers instead of reinventing the wheel

I think this season will be very interesting because mistakes will cost a lot more. For example, if a driver makes a mistake and has to retire, they will a lot less races to make up for it.

I'm personally against reverse grids. I think you were slightly incorrect on the football analogy, in my opinion it's like giving the worse club a 5-0 lead and for Liverpool to try and overcome that. For me, that ruins the integrity of the sport.

I think reverse grids would be a bit of a disaster tbh, assuming the first race was short (1 stint) each driver would be fighting as hard as possible to keep the place. And it isnt just the top 6 making it past the pack, the red bulls would have to pass mclaren who have to pass renaut who have to pass tororoso etc. Each position has little to no speed advantage over the previous, therefor I think you would have a very frustrating experience for everyone involved (except whoever managed to hold on to a decent position but even then it would be a 'fake' pole/win).

I'm not sure Tommy's comparison of a pub team versus Liverpool is a fair comparison to qualifying. I feel like winning a race is equal to the premier league title in this case. The top teams are in the premiership(qualifying near the front) with the best chance of winning the PL. The pub team would need to work their way up from lower regional divisions in order to win. The bottom teams progress naturally getting better until they can compete with the EPL teams. SO qualifying is more related to the organization of team rankings rather than a head to head match.

If its easier to pass I would be for the reverse grid but it is so hard to pass so I totally understand in this case Mercedes. Trust me,RB or Ferrari would block it if they are that team doing good as Merc F2 cars CAN pass,big difference

F1 should have a 50% lengh - qualifying grid race on Saturday then a 100% length reverse qualifying or championship grid race on Sunday I feel like continuing with a single race format could he the demise of F1, it's not just the cars that need to innovate

Lets just say that ypu do the revers grid quali. How do you see that happening on a track like monaco. Last year there wasnt a way for Verstappen to pass Hamilton, or when Ricciardo won the race with a damaged power unit but they coulsnt overtake. If you want the best to win, which i do feel. i feel like you shouldnt give them a penalty for being the best, and reward them for being the best by having them start in front. By putting the fastest cars on the back of the grid you run the risk of causing chaos when slower cars, or less experienced drivers are in the way, and if you have a Maldonado like figure than that might influence the championship. When you lets say Hamilton and verstappen have a 1 point difference in the last race, and because at the start for example Kvyat torpedoes 1 or both of them. This would influence the championship quite drastically. Where as when they start at the front there wouldnt be a torpedo to take them out. And teams like williams who made big mistakes, and are now paying the price for that shouldnt be rewarded for that by starting at the front. By the way im very sad about whats happening to one of the all time great constructors
