I had no idea what a flat tire shuffle was, but after hearing it I'm finding how aptly named it is inexplicably hilarious.

Yes...Between my studies with Ed Shaughnessy and Jim Chapin, and my time with Bernard Purdie,I've become a huge shuffle fan.

I learned about this at Stephen's AMAZING Drum Shed (Level 2) this summer (shameless endorsement for the man himself). Among so many other things I learned, I will certainly never forget the Flat Tire Shuffle. In fact I am playing it in a song tomorrow night at a gig, and I am stoked to put it into service! If you're thinking about taking a trip to Columbia for some Drum Shed....DO IT!

Wow, this is a cool beat! I had never heard of this before, nor can I remember consciously hearing this rhythm in a song. Thanks!!

I honestly want a drum set that has tires for outside design. Those shells would look cool!

Pay attention kids! Class is in session. Exactly right on the money. You can define a killer drummer by their deep vocabulary of shuffles. Well done kind sir.

So glad you mentioned old brown shoe...ringo kills it on that....and the unison build up strokes on the floor and and snare are very difficult to get even due to the tempo...

I learned that as a jig in Irish and Newfie/ fiddle music and yes Country music!

Ooooo . I haven't learned this shuffle yet. I play the blues, and I thought i knew them all. I do play the Gadd shuffle... which seems to be a variation on the flat tire. Excellent video

Lots of SRV and ZZTop songs as well. I always thought it was called "The Texas Shuffle."

the first shuffle he palyed is the "texas shuffle"

@@insanedrummer89 That's what I thought as well, but Stephen says it's a "regular shuffle."

@@brian96597 The one he called 'regular shuffle' I've usually heard called a double shuffle (since the hands are doubling the full shuffle rhythm) or a chicago shuffle, as it was popular in chicago blues. Most of these flat tire shuffles I've heard called texas shuffles in the past. A 'regular shuffle' in my mind is where the hihats or ride play the full shuffle rhythm over a regular backbeat on the snare. In the end, I don't think there's a consensus on any of these names. It might be easier to play them than to name them...

Once we get into the weeds then we start finding the nuanced differences between a Texas shuffle, Chicago shuffle, New Orleans shuffle, etc. I was trying to not get too deep into that end haha...but hard to do on a video like this. The Texas shuffle is a different shuffle than the flat tire in my book

I like the really slow alternate version of Empty Arms by SRV. Supposedly, Stevie played the drums on that. What's a rub shuffle?
@forkman28Ай бұрын
Would be cool if you could use the playback/instrumental for each of those songs while playing the beat

I saw a thing where gadd did a shuffle using both hands playing the same shuffle pattern, left on snare, right on ride cymbal. Its thick, its greasy its gadd.

We called that a “Texas Shuffle.” Never heard it as “flat tire.” (PS- That hi-hat variation is exemplified on a **GREAT** tune by Johnny Adams called “One Foot in the Blues;” oddly, the same basic groove is used by Bill Bruford on the King Crimson tune called “Matte Kudasai.” Great topic!!)

@@StephenTaylorDrums Yeah, maybe it’s just the Northeast? But I was in deep with some of the older blues guys, and that’s what they always called it. Although one called it a “backwards shuffle” (lol).
