Mike, I Love the way you teach. Make it so simple and so calm when doing it. Looking forward to some other videos like this.

Watching and following along with my guitar. Fretting that C chord with the alternate fingering is definitely the weirdest feeling haha 😂. Had to pause to go over the Major scale with the D chord with 1st form. That backing track does sound really Yacht rocky, but I like it. I can picture Rando rocking out with the house boat band hehe. Love the sound of that little lead phrase you played with it. I did have a little chuckle out loud when you said you hate when people call licks tasty 🤣. I don't like that either, such a weird descriptive word to choose. haha. The wah sounded pretty cool with that higher octave part of the solo.

I've heard about CAGED forever but this video finally made it make sense. I've focused on the C and A forms for a week and already see huge improvements in my leads. It really sets you up nicely for arpeggios to mix in with scalar lines.

Great tool and example of the CAGE system incorporating how both the chords, caged and its major scale form come into one. Its really all there area then just traverse the entire fretboard like a freeway as you well. Thx.

Everyone explains the concept well but I've never found a video that goes in-depth on how to apply this over a chord progression.

I've always been too intimidated by theory to learn much beyond basic chord shapes, so this is great! Cheers, Mike!

I learned this best visually. The short version is We know that if you slide and single note up or down a half step it moves one note. The same concept works with chord shapes. Now, this isn't how CAGED works but how a guitar works. Arty explains that, this is just how to see it. The E and A "shapes" are the chord shapes we use for 6th and 5th string barre chords. Here is a complicated sounding example to illustrate that we aren't totally in the dark, and that it isn't as complicated to put in action. A-maj in the open position is the A version shape. The "E shape" of A-maj is the 6th string 5 fret position. And the A shape of E is at the 5 string 7th fret. Now you know how to start from the E and A shapes, and it turns out we know a lot more than expected. So, hopefully, we can build off of that to do what Arty explained. The important concept is that you already know how to start by using the E and A strings' barre chords, and by knowing how the guitar works, we know theoretically that every chord shape we can finger is movable.

Thanks! I’ve been trying to learn how to even begin a solo, even with the first form of CAGED, I’m able to easily understand the scale. The only issue for me is my fingers get locked… but I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson!

As soon as I started learning the 3 first positions of my E minor pentatonic it just expanded my view of the fret board. A min pentatonic same .... then your off to the races!

For someone like me in their 40's and not planning on ever writing a song or playing live. I simply play for fun learning as many of my favorite songs as possible. Is the CAGED system something i should spend my time on ?
@crackerfoot19 күн бұрын
I would say, if you enjoy doing it, then yes! The process remains the same, no matter what stage you're at, the important thing is to learn to enjoy the process, and not focus on the end result, because there really is none.
@jimhimesjr18 күн бұрын
I would say yes as you’ll use these shapes in songs that you learn. I’m in my 40’s too and not a good player by any means but i use caged. It’s actually kinda fun playing the same chord in different positions.

Thoughtfully explained Mike. Visual references, attached to the sound of the notes= better playing. :-)

Caged is cool and all but I think it's better to first learn all the triad inversions on each set of adjacent strings.

can you give an example pls?

Thats how I did it and its harder but Im glad I learned it that way. CAGED is a good "cheat" if you will. But the advantage to the CAGED system is that it gets beginners to start making progress right off the start, which will hook them on guitar, the disadvantage to the CAGED system is that once they learn it they may my inclined to say "good enough, I know all I need to know ". Thats just what I think, and I'm sure you and I are on the same page there.

I'm 44 been playing for the better part of 30 years, don't know caged but I have a good handle on all the scale positions so that more or less can be the same thing once you are very familiar

To add to making it even more simple C and D are kind of the same and G and A are also kind of the same. The notes are above or below the same shape so you can play 2 shapes at the same time.
@HandyL7 күн бұрын
I see it more as E A and D are the same and G and C are the same. E A and D are built R,5,R,3,5,R. G and C are built R,3,5,R,3,R.

Genuine question, as maybe things will become clearer as you approach the other forms, but this seems to be just showing how to use the major scale at different positions. Yes the scale fits inside, but the form becomes irrelevant as you simply then ignore it and use the major scale shape from the root note. So what's the point of the form at all? Have I missed something (probably 😉).
@brianmckenzie131818 күн бұрын
I sincerely hope Mike replies!! I have yet to figure out this CAGED stuff. I have flickering light bulb moments, but then I go dark! In one course I came away with, know your root notes and the associated scales with those roots. But then another said, CAGED is about chord shapes, NOT connecting scale patterns, thus my confusion when they start playing scales talking about the CAGED system. Relating to your original question, are the 5 forms (trying to stay away from the letter designations) really the 5 pentatonic boxes and then you add notes to make it into the major scale or whatever? All goes back to knowing the root notes?
@TheArtofGuitar18 күн бұрын
When you say major scale shape, you're talking one of the CAGED forms or perhaps a few CAGED forms that are connected together. Now image all 5 forms across the neck giving you a roadmap of that scale everywhere. It's like having GPS for the fretboard. ;) Also don't forget that this also means all the modes within each form too. It's not just for major scales, everything's in there. I do recommend learning all 5 and it'll just click.
@noggintube18 күн бұрын
@@TheArtofGuitar thanks for taking the time to reply. I think I get what you're saying. The forms almost become 'markers' for navigating, and the form at those positions keeps you in the same key. Will probably become clearer in the next one but I think I see what you mean 👍

Now If instead of going up the octave you go up to the relative minor and that's when your music doors start getting blown up because now you have a key change and you're making it that much more interesting I also try to tell everyone when changing Keys keep that harmonic minor in your back pocket and now we're talking about you becoming a serious musician
