From China's treatment of the Uyghurs and strict COVID-19 policy, to it's state surveillance and aggressive foreign policy, growing numbers of critics view China as an existential threat to freedom and democracy. However, others liken China's actions to those of the USA or argue that it has been a positive force, lifting more than 800 million people from poverty. Are criticism of China simple and imposition of a Western value system or does China really pose an existential threat to our way of life?

Wu'er Kaixi, who converted to Christianity from Muslim, is right about the Western policy against China. These policies can be categorized into 3 kinds of illusions, first naive, second selfish, and lastly stupid. This man is so smart and insightful, I would vote for him if he ran for the US president or UK prime minister election.

@@CelineMitchell OMG, this Uyghur survived from Tiananmen protest in 1989, then the Ürümqi riots in 2008, then the Xinjiang Concentration Camp in 2019, and then the COVID-19 restriction in 2021, he must be a Superman!

What is wrong with Muslim? When the Japanese is humiliating our ancestors, and still pushing us and our offsprings to hell, when the Japanese is still stealing everything from us right now, you are here blame everything, from blaming ourselves, blaming our ancestors, blaming Muslim, blaming everything else.

Not the right to choose a particular kind of tea but moral values, free speech, dialogue and the right to criticise the government. True.

If China dared to actively meddle or patronize the West in that way... I only say Julian Assange and Edward Snowden.

When facing with foreign subversive elements, Deng Xiaoping chose to put the house in order first, realizing that glasnost and perestroika simultaneously were impossible given China's socio-economic and political stage. Deng, the architect of the new China after 1978, then continued on with his socialist market economy building the foundation for China's rise.

I just want to say an aspect that is usually not known in the WEST about the students who ran away from the Tiananmen incident is that they betrayed their friends who were protesting side by side with them. They rallied a lot of people for the protest but ended up now living overseas with "prestige" for being participants/leaders, while most people who participated suffered the consequences and punished. It's a similar situation for HK young leaders who ended up running to the UK and leaving the rest of the community to rebuild the confidence of the society that drove a lot of the Western businesses away due to political instability. This is why I do not respect them. You have to change the system from inside, it never works with pressures from outside. You have to be smart with the tactics.

I respect what said, anHis speech was very provocative and emotional, but I can understand and Tiananmen is almost an indelible stain on the Chinese government (especially Deng), which is irrefutable. But in terms of facts, there is indeed no evidence for the massacre of Uighurs, and no evidence means no evidence. As for Hong Kong, the return of sovereignty to China in 1997 is internationally recognized, and if he wants to discuss the liberal international order, he must abide by it. The later part he was actually talking about the myth of "end of the history", or the failure of classical modernization theory which means the economic growth brings democracy automatically, now we see China and we realize it is not the case. It was been discussed for tens of years in International relations field and I am suprised he mentioned the nearsightedness of democracy regimes, because there are some arguments that the west should react more on Tiananmen incident. I feel bad for his personal experience, he has the rights to call CCP thugs, but what if they are not thugs anymore or new leaders are good, actually before Xi got power, many people believe China was experiencing a mild transformation of political system(well and then Xi got elected again and again). As he blames the U.S for continuing the relationships with China, he might already realize, the freedom or human rights are never concerned as long as it does affect the votes or economy. above is purely my personal opinion

Wuer KX's assessment exaggerates the threat. While the CCP's authoritarianism is concerning, democratic systems have proven remarkably resilient against even severe challenges. Their ideological differences need not destine China and the West to conflict. History shows us that divergent political systems can and have peacefully coexisted. With economic interdependence today, outright conflict is thankfully less plausible. Further, engagement promotes reform by exposing China to outside ideas. Severing ties risks strengthening Chinese nationalism. We must be cautious of overstating the case. The CCP's control over information limits our understanding of its intentions, and it shows no signs seeking to directly undermine other regimes. Its drive remains domestic control, not global conquest. To accuse is to provoke. 'Existential threats' become self-fulfilling if we abandon diplomacy for hostility. A tempered, nuanced approach best safeguards our interests and ideals. Vigilance with engagement is wiser than hostility that risks escalation. Differences need not doom us to enmity if we embrace understanding over alarmism. I urge continued prudent discussion, not conflict. At last, many Chinese people have understood that fortunately, the revolution launched by those students did not succeed. This is because their subsequent words and deeds proved that if they had succeeded, it would have only led to one tragedy replacing another. The positivity that they could generate to China may have been far less than those of the people they're fighting against.
